Berry or Knoppix works great thought no wifi dongle support for the old version. Come on guys, throw me something here...it's the reuse ability of these old PC and keep them from the landfill that really helping mother Earth.

  • @UnitedPebbles give me your system specs and i will find a pup to suite mate

  • @sneekylinux

Pentium 2 with only 128 MB.

  • @UnitedPebbles you should try wary 5.1,i have it on sneekyboy's laptop and(he is 6 years old by the way) it works quite ok,please bear in mind that it would be a good idea for you to get a gparted live iso,and partition your disk first, and give yourself a lot of swap to start with,so say your h/d is 6 gig, make your swap 1 gig,and your primary the other five, then chuck in the pup disc of your choice and off ya go...nice

  • this looks like a complete copy of windows 98

  • @aerocite mnnn,i beg to differ

  • @aerocite If you know how she lives then you know how she looks.

If you know how she lives you will want to know how it looks

  • @aerocite you're wrong, is better!! :D

  • you sound like the headmaster of the most expensive and prestigious College in the world were they teach magic and arts of war and stuff like that, I'm positive that youre smoking a pipe and having tea right now, lol.

i mean no harm with this comment, I actually wish I had your accent, it sounds awesome.

Puppy looks a lot more robust thant the time I tried it, cheers

  • @jaymezavirus ahh,the pipe has gone out and the tea has gone cold, and have run out of chocolate digestives too...lol

  • Merci mister British!

    ;-)

  • Your accent is exactly like:

    1) Flight Pilot announcement before landing.

    2) When a movie ends and another one is to begin soon.

  • omg your lip smacking

  • thanks for the review

  • does this have its own *vmware*.... like you know how DSL runs on its on once its extracted to your computer .... those th is work the same way6

  • Im instaling this motherfucker on my external hard drive, because my main died. god damnit.

  • I run it just for fun on a Dell Inspiron 3000 with 166Mhz P1, 144MB/40GB & WiFi. It's still pretty fast. Only drawback is the 800X600. If it wasn't for that I'd use it every day!

  • @jbmaru run a newer version and you will get a real res man...

  • @sneekylinux Erm no it's the laptop screen resolution (1998... and now I've sold it anyway) but thanks for the reply!

  • Hi. What program do you use to record your videos in Puppy?

  • @PcTipsForPcUsers there are a few out there, rmd or xvidcap would be good for you

  • HAHAHAHAA BBC Food now i know why british peopoles Fat!

  • Hello,

in how far is puppy linux reduced compared to other linux distributions? Does it have less functionality in any way or is it more difficult to handle?

  • @puddingkatapult Puppy Linux has most programs that a Basic Ubuntu Linux user would want. The interface is very light (uses OpenBox I think). It all runs in only 128 MB of RAM. It feels way faster than Ubuntu. It loads from a CD or USB (portable OS!) but can install a "frugal install" and a storage space onto your hard drive. You have about 90% functionality of Ubuntu in my opinion, but the other 10% is mostly high-powered programs like video games and fancier multimedia programs. It's fast.

  • This is free, right?

  • @chica476 yes its free...

  • @sneekylinux

    And it's compatible with PCs?

  • @chica476 yes it is,will run on most hardware matey...

  • Loving the accent. Quite soothing when watching a youtube video.

  • @OsodeCaram3lo glad to be of help...hehe

  • It's Awesome! it runs on a 126 MB PC

  • Puppy Linux 5.01 is the best version yet! 733 MHz 256 MB RAM Chromium browser, Opera browser, Firefox OpenOffice VLC Player Skype GIMP Audacity and tons more. The wireless connection is flawless for my USB adapter. I use Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and listen to streaming radio.
  • i cant connect to the net..wlan and direct cable..T_T

  • @weward Are you using Puppy 5.0.1? Use the "Simple Self Test" button to find what's there first before saving it to your wireless autoconnect profile. If you still have problems, go over to the Puppy Linux Forums and post a question.

  • Can someone tell me how to resolve the shutdown issue on celeron 766mhz because it cannot shutdown, all that it says when I go to shutdown is SYSTEM HALTED and afterwards I have to shut down my computer manually via power button.Any help with this? Thank you.

  • @DreamdoctorBL Does that with mine too. I'm guessing that is somehow related to the fact that Puppy Linux runs mainly from the RAM and hardly accesses the hard drive.

Does it on both my 400 MHz and 733 MHz old clunkers.

  • @DreamdoctorBL just click the power button mate, its acpi prob with plder hardware

  • Thx for your review...

...you have a wonderfully peaceful way of talking. Puts me at ease I could listen to your mumbling all day long!

  • @frameir well thank you.....

  • I've tried two versions of Linux, Fedora Core 6, and Puppy 4.1.2

I must say I was disappointed with Puppy. I tried to install Open Office and it just wouldn't make progress. I had the installing screen up, but it was making no progress at all.

I'm going to try Fedora Core 12 next. Hope it works out better.

But on the plus side it was quick. Loading and shutting down. I didn't even need to double click it was so fast and responsive.

  • @BigBobsh2o was if a full install or frugal??

  • @sneekylinux

It was full and I'm using version 4.1.2 It doesn't matter because after spending more time with it I realized that the write program that comes with it can save documents as MS Office Word format (along with spreadsheet compatibility) which is what I cared about. I like it a lot more now and I plan on upgrading to 5.0 soon.

I dual boot Puppy with Windows Xp and so far I'm liking Puppy more. A lot more hardware friendly on my older laptop.

  • @BigBobsh2o well done mate, you have found the light, the latest version of abiword is super duper when you go to puppy 5....

  • @sneekylinux

Yeah, my only major gripe with Puppy is the inability to create user accounts.

I was wondering, is installing and using RPM's the same in Puppy as it is in the other distros? I ask because the only thing I'm lacking is the driver for an HP Deskjet printer I have.

  • I love your videos Sneekylinux!

  • what are the specs of the machine you are running it on?

  • Me again. This time I'm back watching this video on a 400 MHz / 256 MB RAM Gateway Essential comp that me and the wife bought in December of 1999.

Running Puppy 4.3.1 like a champ.

Thanks for all the videos. It opened the door to the Linux world for me as I am now messing around in the Ubuntu and then OpenSuse worlds.

  • Puppy is rock solid, i will always have a special place in my heart for puppy. It's the distro that taught me how linux could appeal to anyone, and be usful for everyone.

  • What about antivirus protection? You said it runs in root

  • @adrastea99 not needed LINUX DOES NOT GET VIRUSES

  • Uh, I know a few people who would beg to differ

Plenty of programs can mess up linux in root

  • @ever1tubes well thats not totally true, there are things out there, but in general linux is a safer place

  • @ever1tubes

Linux is not immune to viruses, it's just that very few people make viruses for linux.

  • @nitoro81 Yeah, Linux is not immune to viruses just like Bill Gates is not immune to poverty. But the real question is how LIKELY that is to happen. Linux is only 1% of the OS market, it is built far more securely than Windows, and any widespread viruses will get patched up immediately by the Linux community.

Plus, many virus writers actually prefer to use Linux themselves! They respect it.

  • Hi there can you help me i am not a computer expert but i want to use puppy linux

I want to install it on my 5 gb partition for playing games only i want to install it in ram i have 1.2 gb also i use window xp is it possible.

Please can you suggest me some tutorials i tried but could not find any

    thx

  • I'm new to the Puppy Linux family: - 733 MHz emachine - 256 MB RAM - USB wireless DSL Internet adapter - Opera 9.2 browser - SeaMonkey - can watch YouTube - MP3s and Grooveshark streaming audio - word processing - spreadsheets - Facebook, Google Docs, Twitter, Meebo, Gmail, Zoho, - DVD videos - Pwidgets: analog clock, CPU/RAM meter, sidebar gadgets - cool desktop themes Go Pup!
  • can you run facebook applications on puppy linux like farmville and shit? if so i would so make it my main OS.

  • yes facebook app's run fine as i'm told by my children..

  • nice video but ur voice sucks

  • i will take that as a compliment my Germanic friend and thank you,but we all suck,as you do i suppose...lol

  • how about printers can they work too on puppy?

  • yup,as with a lot of linux distro's hp is the preferred printer, but a lot of others work too

  • No it doesn't refresh rate is 60 hz which shows flicker on crt.I dont have the flat lcd screens for my desktop, still have crt and dont plan to buy a new monitor.

  • @MrTabby5000 is this with xvesa?

  • Dont work with crt monitors.

  • @MrTabby5000 well it does my friend,if xorg does not work for you out of the box try xvesa

  • OMG your voice <3

  • 4.3 is faster than 4.2?

    Hrm.

I have a amd duron 600 MHz, and the min sys requirements were stated as 500 MHz cpu for 4.2 and 233 MHz for 4.1,

so i downloaded 4.1 in hopses that it will be faster, for 4.3 there were no requirements given.

    What do you say?

(I want to use it as a test platform for selfmade games that are to run on a weak linux handheld console some day, which I can't yet target)

  • i have a ten year old compaq presario computer that was given to me by a relative. i also have a brand new netbook, so i use the presario to just screw around with operating systems and stuff. it's had windows ME, windows XP, ubuntu netbook remix, and currently has ubuntu desktop. i've been experimenting with puppy lately from the CD, and i LOVE it. every other OS lags like crazy on that computer but puppy runs like my new netbook! anyway i'm going to just fully install it on the hard drive.

  • Antix did not support my modem, however niether did Puppy. I do like what anti has done with its gui though; Is it KDE by anychance?

  • checking antix.....is it faster than the pup?....

  • How does AntiX compare to Puppy?

  • mnn,its horses for courses mate, but anti x is a bigger distro so has some more stuff, but give it a go as it is a live cd

  • I have puppy running on a Dell Deminsion 2400 (4 yrs old) with 500mb ram, and its the fastest operating system I've ever seen

  • @thedtsone

Try puppy on a newr computer wow.

  • Mine boots from HDD and runs on 300MHz celeron with 128MB. Not lightning fast, but pretty quick.

  • How well would this perform on the following computer?

    - 733 MHz eMachine eTower

    - 256 MG RAM

And how wide is the software selection for Puppy?

  • On your system, puppy should fly! You could also try Xubuntu for a wider software selection.

  • Will this be very fast on a Pentium MMX 166 Mhz?

  • all really depends on the spec of the machine mate,e.g. how much ram you have and the hard disk.

i have done it on a 166,but you have to give it a lot of swap if you have little ram,and don't expect to get a decent video frame rate.

slitaz will be the same for video me thinks, unless you have a separate video card, and a good one..

  • I have 64 MB of ram and 3 GB hard disk

  • ok first you may need to to get a gparted disc,so you can partion your hd first, make the first one 2 gig, then the rest for swap,i have done vids on this before so have a look, then install puppy on the first(and only)one and you will have a usable pc,but dont expect too much,or you could go with slitaz, check my vids on that too

  • What does the swap need to be, secondary or pirmary?

  • secondary will be ok,but you may have to use a separate partition disk if the pup version does not work.

    gparted live will do it.

  • I only have 1 3.2gb hard drive in the laptop and in gparted i make a 2gb partion, and save the rest for swap, when i go to make the swap logical is fadded out i only have the option of primary and extended.

  • @sneekylinux gparted comes with puppy linux.

  • thats correct mate, but on a really old lapy or desktop, and i do mean old,you will find that gparted will not run

  • yeah it will... I have a POS that taked 10 minutes to load Win 98... IF it decided ot load... Puppy took under 5 min to set up including reading and the nnext reboot was under 1 min

  • I tried installing puppy on a pentium mmx 166 with 160mb and surfing the net is kinda slow. I ended up putting win98se back on that old desktop. I think pentium 300 is the minimum I'll put puppy on.

  • A great System, much faster than eeebuntu, it runs on my eee701 and 901 out of the box. Wireless works also at once on both. Try it.

  • Thank you for great video :) Studied many things :-D

  • i'm installing this to my netbook because i hate the NBR interface of most netbook distros, but i also don't like a regular desktop. this is nice because it's a little bigger and you only have to single click launchers. i've used eeebuntu for a long time, but i'm just getting sick of it and it runs sluggish.

  • What program did you use to record this video?

  • not sure what you need and what your main os is,so try instanbul to start with, but there are others

  • I haven't been able to get a 4.3 frugal install to boot. Had no problems with anything else in the 4-series.

  • what are the errors?

  • I'm not an advanced or even intermediate user, but I'll get about two lines of the boot dialogue, and then my Thinkpad A22e will restart.

  • Try turning off APM or ACPI in the bios.

For some reason this distro will hang on some laptop bioses without tweaking the boot parameters.

  • partion the drive first so you have swap to start

  • awesome! I like the new theme it has. The new website looks nice too :)

  • I think this is the nicest puppy yet, I have actually ordered a new wireless card so I can run this easily on my multi -boot laptop, it really is super fast.
