  • @johnjturner1 John: My Great Grandfather, an Irish man, was born and raised in Glasgow. Scotland. Wen asked by my Uncle, "but Grandfather, you're Scottish born not Irish". He answered, "if I were born in a barn would it make me a horse?" Again thank you for the explaination of the "Bower".

  • many thanks for putting a magnificent video as this up on youtube :)

I started off liking the songs whisky in a jar and finnegans wake, and when I dug deeper into the dubliners I found luke kelly :)

I'm from sweden myself and started playing banjo due to my love for this kind of music :)

  • perfection

  • Great song.

  • ronnies voice acts as base gud stuff

  • You have so many luke kelly videos and songs, thanks 4 posting them!

  • My Pleasure,

    Thanks for watching them :)

  • I have to add my thanks too. I cannot believe that I did not know Luke existed until two months ago when I stumbled across him by accident on you tube, thanks to you. Now I am in love forever......

  • gnss4evr, you spoke for me too.

Thanks for posting good old Luke, you help the word hear his voice.

  • I always knew luke was loved, but i didnt realise just how much until i started putting up his songs and vids.

  • Well, y'know, you may have single-handedly rescued the man's legacy. I'm seventeen, and an American, and I'm really into traditional music and I play the banjo (I've even written a few original songs), but I never would've discovered any of that without your videos.

So pat yourself on the back for that. You deserve it.

  • Shes already on my list ! but really your blood is worth bottlin'

  • First time hearing Luke OMG I have tears in my eyes. sooo good

  • Fan for life i hope?

  • this song should always be sung the way it was wrote,,,with blood in the throat and passion in the eyes, its an old rebel tune and not meant to be sung so light-hearted,not much gusto in this late live version,,,the Bower was an old meeting place for rebels and such, a melting pot of brave men, glorious dreams and solidarity

  • Luke looks so bad in this video!!! :( At least his voice doesn't suffer at all!!! :D

  • He looks so terrible here :(

  • Absolutely the best!! Thanks for the wonderful video.

  • Pure Genius :)

  • I love you kellyoneill for posting these lovely songs. I am reliving the past with a few pints of Porter at the moment. And i´m loving every moment and sip of it. Thanks to yours an my love of the BIG LUKE. BLESSYOU

  • kellyoneill...you deserve you're own place beside the Celtic heroes old and young, you have done a wonderful work with this fine collection of our most beloved balladeer's...often times mine eyes have filled with the sheer joy of watching and listening to the historic treasure here stored with such dignity, by you....Dhai ga'd do bheanachd..

  • Thank you for such a heartwarming and lovely comment. :)

  • the original 4 dubliners!!! just pure amazin!!! was talkin ta barney today in longfort!! very very nice man...he has a nice word for every1!!

  • anyone know why luke kellys banjo is so big?

  • its a 5 string banjo! different than barneys! usually used for bluegrass playin!

  • its particularly big even for a 5 string though!

  • Luke is playing a 'folk banjo'. It has an extra 3 frets at the top of the neck. The banjo is then tuned to an open "E" chord. To make it sound like a regular 5-string banjo, a capo [clamp] is placed just behind the 3rd fret. The 5th string (knob on side of neck) also has a small sliding capo on it, tuned likewise. The advantage of a folk banjo: it lets you play in keys of E, F and F#, without needing to capo way up the neck on a normal 5-string banjo (e.g. 10 frets up, to play open-F).

  • Luke looks handsome here, sick or not. Doesn't his hair look lovely and soft, ya just want to touch it:)

  • Was this performance done after the tumour was removed or before?

  • Im not 100% certain but id say before the tumour was removed.

he collapsed on stage, 30th june 1980

and this vid was the same year,

thats some amount of hair to grow back in such a short space of time.

  • Good point, that. Thanks. And also thanks for uploading all the videos.

  • My Pleasure :)

  • I have never been so completely enchanted by a voice as I am with Luke Kelly's. WOW!!

  • RIP Ronnie....say hello to Luke up in heaven, will ya come to the bower?

  • don't forget about CB here's there to

  • one of the best bands ever!!!!

  • this is a great vid, yep great beards too

  • some of the best beards in history!!!

    RIP Luke

  • Luke Kelly, The Soul

    (Written: november 2006)

A song of that Bird alone

    The Irish red haired Lion

The Soul of Ireland who sang about Hope and grief with Passion

Truth in the world so painful and hard as Stone

You sang with Tears in the Eyes

    Even battles in your Songs

And also courses with deep Cries

about the feeling Rights and Wrongs

  • When you were Singing it was your soul who Spoke

Pure Magic words straight from the Tongue

while your Heart started to bleed, Sometimes

Your eyes closed and almost melt to one with you face

    Such beautiful pieces

With such Poetic and such Clearly rhyms

    Luke Kelly
