We sang this hymn in my (RC) parish for the first time last summer. Most had never heard it before. This tune (Slane) is a real treasure of the Church.
Not so fast pal. The melody does not belong to the Church, it is a traditional Irish tune. In Ireland Slane is also sung as a folk song called, "Banks of the Bann".
Not so fast buddy boy. It does not belong in/to the Church? It belongs in pubs? On football pitches? In hurling matches? Perhaps in brothels? Well, perhaps it should be sung in brothels. If you object then why on earth do you listen to music which has inspired many, countless numbers of people for 1200 years to whisper at the finale "For the greater glory of God." Perhaps you are one of these crypto-fascist-atheists who does not believe there is a God and damn if anyone else tries to believe ...
I am only objecting to inaccurate information: 'Slane' was not written as a hymn, but as a folk tune. However, it makes a fine hymn too, as 'Be Thou My Vision'. And 'yes' it is played in Irish pubs, as a folk song. Is it played in brothels? Well, why don't you tell us from your own experience?
So where did that crypto-fascist-atheists stuff come from? Next time read a post thoroughly before rushing into an inflammatory, accusatory reply. You can read English can't you?

Really beautifully done and the ending, walking through a lush field, was a nice touch.
