While it may be a colloquial expression for the Great Depression, whoever corrected you was off base. In this context, your translation was accurate. The first generation referred to was clearly pre-Great Depression. Having had to clear and live off the land, he would have had a really tough life. That's closer to the proper translation. Sidenote: cennes noires is literally black pennies, but is closer to the English expression of "red cents."

Continuing my train of thought: the translation would have been closer to "he saved every red cent." Translation can't really be done word-for-word; we need to look for the overriding spirit of the text.

I would say the song is rather sung in "Québécois" the language of the average Quebecer. Pure "Joual" is rare in urban Quebec: it includes a rich vocabulary of words and expressions that the average Quebecer wouldn't understand... Rather like London Cockney. e.g.), in a country clinic I once saw a patient who told me "J'vois pu"... I eventually had to get a local nurse to translate for me: The patient was telling me in Joual that she had stopped menstruating!

Even le français du Lac St-jean is spoken quite this yeah, it's only the fact that they have a strong accent, and that they add Lala, at the end of their sentences. (I know a bunch of people who lives there, and they are easy to understand. An dthe 'Joual' would be something so much more not understandable for the outsider than what this song is about.
