  • Help!!! I wanna upgrade the graphics card on my Dell XPS M1530, is it possible???

    Cheers.

  • @xaviercourtney i had a m1530's and its quite the machine. yes you can upgrade it but its hard you have to buy a exact same shape and its much easyer to just buy a new computer il do some research for you :)

  • i have my HD 6770M to a level of a GTX460M/8800GTX SLI overclocked^^

    it's 5% faster xD

  • where do you buy graphics cards for laptops?

  • Had to replace my 8700M GT SLI recently and this was a BIG help, Thank You.

  • wow all that to upgrade ur GPU dud you should get a desk top

  • where do you get your parts im getting one just like this from my buddy at college and i want to upgrade it as well since it is burned out... i know where to get desktop parts n stuff im really good with desktops just never mess with laptops i guess cuz there really compact.

  • Very informative video(s), thanks for uploading. I bought mine of these on Ebay last week but have a question for you or any readers. Mine has the 2.2ghz duo core and I'd like to upgrade to the 2.8 extreme. I've heard the bios is different since it allows overclocking, so can I just change the chip and possibly upgrade bios? Or is there something more sinister involved?

  • @thexmenfan - Upgrade the BIOs, and then upgrade the CPU.

  • THANKS MATE!

  • So my m1730 xps has two sli 9800 GTX's in it. Is it possible to upgrade these cards to something better?

  • Thanks so much for posting this. I find myself needing to replacement the touchpad on my M1730. Do you have a video on that as well? Hard to find instructions on how to do that. I'm curious if I'll need to remove the LCD screen. I've kept it in such good condition, and the hinges are nice and tight. I'm afraid I'll mess that up if I take it all apart. Anyway, any help/advice greatly appreciated!

  • Really sorry to burst everyones bubble but the price of laptops has significantly reduced... for example i bought an MSI GX740 when i got it, it was top of the range two weeks later something better was out that was over a year ago. im pretty sure you could find a msi laptop from the last 2-3 years for the same price as a standard XPS 1730 and with a much slimmer design. It has a 5870M GPU which is pretty fucking powerful im telling you, it even runs RAGE Thumbs up so people can see

  • I have this same laptop and was thinking of upgrading the video card and screen. Are there any graphics cards that support HD display that will fit this computer?

  • Can someone help?, I have Dell inspiron 1545 with Intel GMA 4500MHD 256m graphics card. I d like to upgrade it. What graphics cards can work with this laptop. Or what requirements do i need to look forward prior choosing one. I need it to work with inspiron 1545.

  • @aleksankazakov - You Graphics Chip is soldered onto the main board. To upgrade, you would need to replace your entire main board with one that has a faster GPU chip.

  • what is the difference between sli and regular do they install the same

  • @dondon4720 Sli is two cards built into one unit... regular is one card built into one unit

  • Anyone know a site that sell 8800mGTX? May someone post a link to me? :3

  • Thanks Iftibashir. I just finished replacing my broken 8700M GT with another one bought second hand, and the whole process was very easy and painless thanks to your excellent videos. keep up the excellent work.

  • what was the supplier that you ordered the replacement card from? or do you know where to get one as my video card has died.

  • can i upgrade to dell inspiron r15 ( n5010 ) Please REPLY

  • @BimBimma1 you CAN'T upgrade laptops very well... don't bother attempting to cause everything is designed so you can't upgrade, you have to pay more for better

  • where can u buy the graphics card?

  • can i do this on my dell xps15?

  • @MrKyleOwns nope... sorry but they have different form factors... if you thinking of upgrading don't get a laptop... buy a better one to begin with

  • My graphic card is too large to fit in my Dell. The slot is the same and my friend that it should works. Is that dangerous if I make spaces by cutting some useless metal at the sides?

  • Thanks again. One question, I have been to the nvidia site, they do have an updated driver that applies to my current video card as well. Should I try and replace that driver with the nvidia one to see if the system remains stable? Sort of as a benchmark for the new card? Any help is much appreciated. XPS m1730, core2duoT9000@2.8ghz x2, 8700mGT, 3gig ram and DX9.0c

  • iftibashir, thanks so much for posting this series. I want to do exactly this with my system. It is same spec except operating XP pro SP3. Is this going to be an issue for the new card to work with? Dell only has a certified driver for Vista, do you feel the nvidia driver will work in you opinion? Thanks for any help you might give

  • @frmutator - It should work, although make sure you can get a decent driver from the nVidia site before you go ahead....

  • help me how to upgrade my video card dell Ultra Small Form Factor

    Dell™ OptiPlex™ 760

  • please answer this, can i upgrade my nvidia gt 420m to gt 540m on my dell xps 15?

  • @martinthegreat88 unless you buy the main board in the laptop and replace it yourself... no

  • I noticed that this video was made in '08. Are there any better graphic's cards out there that are compatible with this machine? Also, can they be installed in the same way?

  • @IRagnarokV - Yes I believe there was one more graphics card made for this machine - better then the 8800 - I think it was the 9700sli? Installation will be the same.

  • Can I do this to the Dell m1330?

  • @PrototypeKevin - I dont think you can.

  • hi i have a dell studio xps 16. is it possible to change the graphics card? It has a ATI Radeon 5730

  • Can i change graphic card in Dell INSPIRON?

Cause my Intel HD Graphic card sucks..

  • @FanCroftLara - No, the GPU chip is soldered onto the mainboard. In order to change the graphics chip you would need to replace the entire mainboard.

  • Take the old one out, put the new one in. Simple...

  • Hey iftibashir.

I have a question, I am not upgrading my video card, only replacing the keyboard. Would I still need to remove the screws on the back of the system in order to remove the existing keyboard or can i just remove the hinge plate and go from there?

Thanks for your time and great video.

    Best regards.

  • @LiveTheWild - No, you can just remove the panel above the keyboard, and then remove the keyboard itself. You only need to remove the screws under the system so that you can take the plastic laptop casing apart.

  • Cool video, sorry to bother, anyone here knows where to buy online a 8700 sli or a 8800 sli ? My 8700 just screwed up and i wanted to change only that card in order to avoid mass blue screens, given prob to graphic card malfunctions. I wanted to try to switch the 2 but seeing this vid I realized they are linked together and it would be impossible to swtich them, since I guess the #1 gpu is the screwed one. thanks in advance :)

  • I have the 8700m gt sli can i really upgrade to the 8800m gtx sli? i hear u have to upgrade the motherboard first??

  • @spookymex - With this system you can upgrade just the graphics card alone. You should be fine to upgrade.

  • Hey people I have a normal intel card thingy on my windows vista but was wonderin if I could upgrade too something better so I can play halo and gta iv on my comp and it's 32 bit wateva that is

  • @Roupz1 well, you should tell people your setup, that way they will be able to help, there are software that will tell it to u if u dont know how... like everest & etc

  • dude i have same laptop xps m1730 and have 8700m gt with windows 7 my sli i dnt know hoe to set up the sli, any suggetions

  • @DarkestBright - In the graphics properties.......also, ensure you have a SLI card - in Device Manager there should be 2 graphics chips listed, not one.

  • I have this laptop but it cant do anything like they show on other youtube videos, I think it may be because of the lack of extreme core and physic ix accelerator, but i had the cards upgraded to 9800GT, any ideas what the problem could be? my drivers are all up to date

  • @AyceSobek - Check and update your graphics drivers - the default Dell supplied ones are not always the best!

  • ...I wonder why they just didn't make a single removable panel under the laptop to give direct access to the graphics card.

  • @FRURMELLL - So they could make more money upgrading it for you!

Also because that would take extra design changes etc - costing more to produce.

  • Isn't there a video showing a CPU upgrade for m1730 somewhere? I've been trying to find one but no luck so far.... the process is a bit more complicated as you need to get the whole motherboard out... Good vid btw, I used this one as a reference last year when I upgraded to 9800m gtx sli

  • lol i've watched this video now, couldn't hear much, so could this laptop play Black Ops now? lol make a video playing that game with this laptop. lol

  • hey, can someone please tell me if the new xps series have upgradable gpu like the old ones? cause the gt 420m is pretty crappy

  • Hi , i have Acer TimeLineX 4280tg. Is it possible that i can upgrade from Ati Radeon HD 5650 to Ati Radeon HD 5800 series ? I hope you know something about acer. By the way , Nice video mate!

  • is a intel® gm965 adequate for gaming or do you recommend getting a better one?which do u recomend?im just gonna be playing fallout

  • is it possible to upgrade the grphic card of the asus n 71jq ?

and where do I buy graphics card for it ? Thanks.

  • I'm currently running the old 8400M's but need to change them as FXIV will run decently but can see it starting to struggle, not sure how reliable the 9800's are

  • might be the fans are kicking in whilst playing games but for some reason they arnt coming in when surfing, do you also use a notebook cooler?

  • i have the 8800 gtx sli card in my xps and it has burnt out i have got it working again by baking it this is the 4th time ive baked it and it works great for now. but what i find very strange is that when im surfing the internet or listening to music the heat monitor says its at 75 degrees but when im playing crysis or empire total war the card goes cooler something like 40 to 50 degrees does anyone know why it does this and if there is a way i can get it to the same heat as when i play games.

  • how much did the new graphcs unit cost you, I need to change my Graphics card using 8400M sli's atm.

  • @spiritse well on ebay the new nvidia 9800 costs around 600 pounds.

  • excuse me teacher iftibashir ,,my laptop screen got replace now i noticed that the screens flickers and color no that good but it goes away if i hold the screen alittle bit any ideas master ???y

  • @cadaverock - Check the ribbon cable between the LCD and the GPU. It may need reseating.

  • YOU ROCK!

Thank you for taking your time to show us how to do this!!!

  • @nlavn4life - No probs. Hope it helped!

  • Hey I have the default dell xps m1730. I have a problrm with a game I downloaded from steam it is called just cause 2. the game is lagging alot. do i need a different graphics card

  • This is an excellent how-to video. I am needing to replace this exact graphics card but the big problem at this moment is trying to actually pruchase this card. I have spent 2 hours on the phone with Dell and have been given such a run around. I have been quoted 3 different prices. $1104.00, $189.00 and $79.00. Needless to say, I am confused and frustrated. But I must say when I finally am able to purchase this card I will follow this install. Thank you.

  • Am I able to update my laptop's graphic card. My laptop is : Acer Aspire 5738.

If you tell me I sub to you and thnx for helping.

  • where can i see the memory of my video card??

  • Wow, this thing is a pain to upgrade. On my Asus you just open the bottom cover, remove 10 screws to take off the cooling assembly, take the card out, put a new one in and you're done.

  • hi can i upgrade the graphics card from my dell inspiron 1564?

  • does the m1730 support the ati 5870M card?

  • i have the new dell 1745 can the graphics card be upgraded

  • that is a scary process your doing man. I don't have the balls to go that far because I would always have in the back of my mind that i'm going to screw up! haha You got balls of steel

  • Thank you very much mate, i have m1730 and want to change my graphics card. i appreciate your work really very nice detailed video.....THANXXXXXXXXXXX very MuchHHHHHHHH....

  • hey i have a Dell inspiron 1545 laptop and i am looking to upgrade the graphics card, will everything done in this video all still work for me?

  • @xmetl - No. You cant upgrade the graphics in a 1545. There are only a few gaming laptops where you can upgrade graphics unfortunately.

Im also using a top spec 1545 at the moment, which may be sold soon - once my MacBook Pro 13 turns up ;o) - yes, Im buying my first ever Mac - but the 1545 is a solid laptop. Ive been very pleased with it for general use - its just not as postable as I would have liked.

  • @iftibashir I have a Dell Latitude E6410 laptop. Is this upgradeable?

  • Comment removed

  • @iftibashir yah same its generally a good laptop its my first and i like it it just isent that portable and u cant change the graphics card.... wich blows cuz i sold my xbox 360 so i use my laptop for gaming but it cant play that many games cuz the graphics card is not really for high graphics gaming.

  • Way too much work for me lol, I'd just fuck something up, I'm sure of it. :P

  • Nice and detailed video, thankyou ifitbashir. I am running the XPS M1730 with 8700M GT in SLI. I recently upgraded to windows 7 and my option to 'enable SLI' disappeared from the nvidia control panel. I also noticed in device manager only 1 graphics card is detected. Do you think this means one of my cards is now faulty, or it's just a coincidence that it stopped working when i went to win7. I've tried both old and latest graphics drivers with no luck. Thanks mate!

  • @noddstar Is everything displayed as normal in the BIOs?? If not then it could be the card!! I would try reseating it forst, just in case its creeped out a little.

  • Can anyone tell me where to buy laptop graphics cards?

  • Excellent video, I'm thinking about taking mine apart to clean out fans/heatsinks ect. Not 100% comfortable though. Would you recomend following all those steps to gain access to cooling system or is there a better easier way?

Considering how hot these bad boys get and mines a couple of years old I'd really love to give it a bit of a clean out. Do you have any thoughts mate?

    Cheers,

    Mike

  • Personally I'd just follow this video - its the best way to clean the system out, without pushing the dust around further into the system.

  • hey this is laptop 900.000 *forint*(<- hungarian money) 3600dollar O_O

  • Your video instructions are excellent.

My XPS M1730 has a single 8700M. Video went out. Researched & found many people had problems with these cards getting micro fractures in the solder connections. Read about baking graphics cards to reflow the solder connections. After following your instructions I removed the 8700 then removed Fan, Heat Sinks and plastic then put on alum foil covered sheet in oven @ 400F for 10 min. Reassembled and PRESTO! It lives again.

  • Hi - thanks for this, excellent! I am watching it as my Dell M1730 actually has a short-circuit problem. It looks like when you connect the laptop to the brick power supply, the power pack turns off and the laptop doesn't turn on at all. I have since learned that the Ageius PhysX card is a very likely candidate for this issue. Question - can/how do I remove the Ageius PhysX card and have the laptop running without it?

thanks for any repliy in advance.

  • The physics card is right next to the graphics card.

Enter device manager and uninstall the physics card.

Next, open the laptop as instructed in this video. Rather then removing the graphics card, remove the card directly next to it, which is the physics card. Then put the system back together and you're done!

Also - check all your USB ports closely. Sometimes a best USB pin is enough to short-out the entire system.

  • Thanks - I removed the PhysX card and PRESTO, my laptop works again! Thankyou again for your advise, it helped a lot! One more question - do you know where, on the web, you can purchase the dual 8800 or dual 9800 replacements without going thru Dell and paying their exhorbitant price.

    thanks again.

  • Unfortunately not - they are very rare, and quite expensive.

Try searching through eBay - sometimes they can pop up on there......

  • THANK YOU iftibashir!!!!!!

  • can someone please tell me what the difference is between a video card and a graphic card? or is it the same thing? PLEASE REPLY! thanks:):D AND is it true that you cant change the cideo card to a laptop? because i wanted to buy a new one for my laptop from pc world and they said that the video card cant be replaced on laptops

  • Yes, video and graphics cards are the same thing. Since these chips are usually soldered onto the mainboard in most laptops, you cannot upgrade the graphics without swapping out the entire mainboard. You can only upgrade graphics in a select few laptops, such as gaming machines etc.

  • To get to the fans and vents, would it be possible to open it up from the other way by just taking off the big bottom panel? I actually see dust bunnies in the vents that are so tightly packed in there I can't blow them out with compressed air. It seriously needs cleaning and it causing overheating problems. :(

  • Your best bet is to open the system up as instructed in this video and clean the system out completely.

  • where can i buy these video card from in the UK and how much do they cost?

  • where i can find 8800 m gtx pls?

  • how much is this laptop pls.. reply

  • where did you get that video card from ive found that same one but it costs over 1200 bucks is there a place that i can find the same one for less??

  • damn that vid card is huge

  • or do i have to get a new processer to???

  • question can i upgrade my cpu to a 2.4+ this is what i have for a cpu Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7500 @ 2.20GHz but i want a higher one can i do that?? and i have a 8800 gt video card aswell can i put a 9000+ type card?? or not

  • thats what i have but mines red :)

  • nice guide, i have a question can i upgrade the card on my XPS m1530? (the model below yours) how do i find out if it is upgradable or if they have an upgrade program going?

Iv currently got the 8600m gs with 4gb ram and duo core 2.4, want to upgrade for mass effect 2 and bad company 2, every thing else is on recomeded system settings apart from graphics card.

    Thanks

  • There is no upgrade program for the m1530.

Upgradability depends on your GPU - is it on board or a seperate chip? If its onboard Im afriad you are stuck with it. If its seperate you could upgrade it, but would find a newer GPU that fits the system hard to acquire in the first instance.

Also bear in mind the system chassis and cooling may not be built for a more powerful GPU, and extra cooling may therefore be required.

  • hello. please tell me a website from were i can buy the 8800 gtx sli. beacouse in romania i can't buit. thx

  • Excellent tutorial. I also have the M1730 and I want to upgrade the graphics cards, so this was very useful. Would you happen to know if any of the GTX 200M series cards fit? I'm waiting for a reply from Dell about this, but they don't even recommend any video card upgrades on their website. Did you buy your 88s from Dell or from a 3rd party vendor? How did you know they would fit? There doesn't seem to be any compatibility charts available so I can see exactly what my options are.

  • Due to the non-standard ports used to enable the GPU card to fit, your options are very limited. I believe you can upgrade to the 8800, or a 9800 - although the 9800 is quite rare - even more so then the 8800's!

  • Ive watched a couple of these videos showing how to install another video card on a dell and in every video the computer is different but everything is similiar except the shape of the video card/graphics card. I am so confused which one I need.

  • Its different in different laptops. The above procedure is for the Dell XPS M1730 only.

  • Has Dell stoped selling XPS M1730?

  • I think they might have. I bought one on new years eve and since then I havent been able to source it on their webpage which is annoying :-(

  • Yeah, same here, except I hadn't purchased one, so now I wont be able to without paying over 1K :(.

  • It seems like they have shifted their gaming notebooks across to their Alienware range :o(

  • Yeah, and Mx15 is like £1400 and Mx17 is like £1800, I don't want to spend that amount of money because I could have got the same specs with the M1730 ;(.

  • *M17x

    *M15x

  • I am considering getting a new card for mine for Christmas, do you recommend the 8800 or the 9800? Do they have the same amount of power? What is the difference? Your videos are what convinced me to get the m1730.

  • good work man!!! i would be nerves taking mine apart, but with yr videos i would do it.

do u have any idea if this laptop is upgradable to the 9800's dell baught out in late 2008?

  • Yes. If you can find the cards anywhere, it will fit. ;o)

  • oh sorry that graphics card is a dual? both of them? sorry lol

    still ausome video man :D

  • Yes, the one card has 2 graphics chips on it - one under each fan.

  • So it IS in effect TWO gfx cards yes?

  • Wow man *respect*

Jus a quick question, is that 8800M GTX only one? or is that dual SLI? cos i can buy one specially from dell with dual 8800MGTX but i dont see how you could fit another one in there :S and that looks like it has two parts :S

sorry if i sound silly :P or dont make any sense :P

    thanks, great video man!

  • can you please do a video on how to change the cpu in a xps m1730

  • If you can find one that wold really be appreciated, was well a couple of good CPU's that we can use in the system

  • where can I by a graphics card? And about how much is it?

  • no. i uninstalled ati driver.

boot to safe mode and run driver sweeper on all ATI

    and insert the nvidia card.

    install drivers and restart

    and still 640x480

  • after you remove all your ati drivers on the graphics card, insert the card and run it like that. buy/download w/e a program called uniblue and check if the program sees the nvidia card. it should tell you to download the driver for the nvidia card, download it. install it, and restart the computer. after restarting the computer you either should have the maximum resolution of the card or the minimum, just adjust the resolution and the bits. :) you're done.

  • when i changed the card in my XPS 435 it got 640x480 16 bit

  • thats y u install the drivers and just set ur lcd display back to its orginal settings

  • hi, where can i find new grapfic cards for that laptop, i mean where can i buy?

  • I don't see it on either the US or UK sites anywhere. I'm looking under Parts and Upgrades; should I be looking somewhere else? Was it really taken off in the past 5 days?

  • Where exactly can you buy NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTX SLI and for what cost?

  • buy it on ebay from a stolen and parted out m1730, or you will be paying about 1500 from dell

  • was searching Dell today, could not find M1730 anymore. I typed in search and it said did not sell.

  • its no longer availible

  • I still see it available on the UK Dell site......

  • Would you be able to do the upgrade from the 8700M SLI to, say, a 9800M SLI or beyond? Or, is this upgrade limited to only the 8800M GTX?

  • I believe a 9800 sli is now available for this system via Dell.

  • Would this handle Cod5 on medium or high settings? and if so what Fps? im looking for an affordable gaming laptop.

  • With the 8800mGTX SLI or above - yes it would handle the game with ease - with high FPS. COD4 played completely smooth - even in firefights etc.

  • what about the original graphics card?

  • Gaming and laptop, pick one;

you could get a much more powerful desktop for the same price your going to spend on the laptop.

  • sometimes you dont have the luxury of being able to lug your desktop around. like me, i am in iraq

  • peckens, but then surely you play the best fps game of all already - real life combat. lack of respawn kinda sucks though

  • So this is a fairly large laptop unlike the one I'm using now, the XPS M1530... So I'm guessing Im using one of the tiny graphics card thingys...

  • The M1530 has an on board graphics chip. The M1730, in comparison, is huge compared to the M1530, and probably also weighs 5 times as much!

  • get an asus laptop

the parts are easier to get to

  • Thanks for your highly informative and usefull comment....

  • I need to do this upgrade and swap out the CPU in mine. Can I just follow this video then continue with the Service Manual for the CPU?

  • Yup, of course.

Follow this video, and when the GPU has been removed, just continue removing all other components - such as the PPU, the optical drive, HDD's, RAM, and so on.

You then need to remove the entire mainboard from the chasis, so that you can get to the rear and remove the screws for the heatpipe and fan covering the CPU.

Next, change the CPU, and put everything back together.

Obviously theres more work involved, but its not too difficult - just remember where the screws go!!

  • will a 9800m gtx fit?

  • I believe one is available for this system - so you would need to purchase it directly from Dell

  • Hi, could you please gimme some feedback to this message.

I'd like to know how to put in a Physics processor, the AEGIA one or whatever, i accidentally forgot to buy it with the dell, so i bought it seperatly, how exactly do you put it in?

    Thanks.

  • Follow this video guide to open the system.

The PPU card sits right next to the graphics card. you simply put it into place just as you do the graphics card.

  • Okie, i'll give it a go now.

If i break my pc, your fault!

    XD

Can you message me your email so i can send you some attatched images if i get confused with it all open and stuff?

    That would be appreciated =>

    Thanks.

  • Hey if i buy like, a third party 8800M or 9800M (basically anything that works but not coming through dell) is it easy to replace / is it actually possible?

  • No. You cant use a standard desktop card in a notebook! The connectors and card design are completely different.

  • dual 9800s haha :]

  • lol this is to much just to upgrade the graphics card id rather just buy a new one lol

  • u know how much these cost??? Would be a bit of a waste to do that.

  • i just got 1 with a 9800

  • whats so good about upgrading a video card what does it do? like difference wise?

  • The versions they sell at Dell come with 9800s now :D

  • got that on my alienware :

    )

  • alienware ftw!

  • where do you get the 8800m gtx? i'm pretty sure they're hard to get...

  • Call Dell Parts. Not hard at all.

  • do you have there number I cant seem to find it.

  • they should make it alot easier to replace the graphics card!it should be as easy as replacing the battery.

  • Damnn,, That card is huge, that almost bigger than mine and i have a regular desktop tower,..:S:P
