  • I hated Windows 3.1, as I struggled to use this OS in the 90s. I was so comfortable using MSDOS,Wordstar,Dbase,Foxpro etc but windows3.1,pagemaker etc were nightmare to me in the 90s. When 3.1 died to give away to 95/XP it was breath. Funny GUI should be easier to use than CLIs like DOS but that was my experience in 1994.

  • ..Man, this is older than porn.. Solitaire... so gangsta back then.

  • You can also run this on VirtualBox, or if you feel awesome enough, install it on a real PC with FreeDOS or DOS ;)

Did anyone else notice that Paint, Minesweeper and Solitaire didn't change until Windows Visturd?

  • @aidenscool09 I thought windows 7- turd changed it all up.

  • @Weegeeisgoingtokillm It did, but it was pretty much identical between Windows 3.1 and Vista inclusive.

  • "This is a video of me running windows 3.1 on my brand new laptop."

    LOL

  • @miani8 while at least it's better then the SUCKISH computer you have

  • I want this now, sod my Vista installation

  • I think it's still debated whether it was an OS unto itself or just a front-end for DOS. The bottom line is that you had to run DOS and then load Windows just like any other application. And though you could set a line in one of the boot files to make it auto-load Windows on startup, you could do that with any other DOS app as well, so it was no different there either.

  • HOW DO YOU LIVE WITH SUCH A SUCKISH COMPUTER?

  • 40 ppl don't have enough strong computer to run windows 3.1

  • Thanks for sharing Windows 3.1. That brings back memories today because I used to have a Gateway 2000 in the 1990s that had Windows 3.1. It can still be usable today.

  • better than mac

  • Nem era nascido nessa época, interface gráfica é uma das coisas que a Microsoft sabe fazer de melhor, pra um sistema operacional que foi feito antes de 93 até que é bem bonito!!

  • @alefesouza o Verdadeiro

  • @rmhubert11496 como assim "o verdadeiro"?

  • This was all I needed a computer for as a child. Simple days of paint, solitaire, and minesweeper.

  • 5 Years video

  • Has anyone ever tried instaling Internet explorer 4 on windows 3.1 . I did it once but it failed even thou the installation when well but it just froze and froze.. eg a reformat as result

  • i think ima switch back....fuck vista win7 and all that new crap

  • i have a virtual machine stored away that has 3.1 installed on it. every once in a great while, i boot it up to see what's good. nothing like opening file manager for a quick, nostalgic browsing experience.

  • Best windowns of Ever -.-

    Realy is a *****

  • I remember when Windows 3.1 was incredibly cool.

I once saw a dot matrix color laptop running Windows 3.1 at a store that was going for more than $3,000.

  • iv 3.1 on virtual pc and 95 and fully works

  • I still have windows 3.1 on diskettes, 12 of them, LOL And it still works!

  • this was the best system .....if only they opened the box and expanded.

the internet has to get faster and the computer needs to stay the same (with minor changes). its like this I play nintendo and the controler changes with every system, but the play staction keeps the same controller .... and all of this with out those fags making virus's

who are we really afraid. of...... people on the road, those that see us driving nice cars... NO IT IS THE SCAMERS ON LINE AND THE LOSS OF CREDIT CARD#

  • Install this on i7=You got your self a supercomputer

  • @Nowhereman90 I ran Doom I and II on Windows 3.11 back in the day, those were latest games you could play on it.

  • where i can download windows 3.1 from?

  • @boost43534 torrent it

  • You Forgot The Startup and The Shutdown

Sorry For Missing Start and END

  • good times...I was going to the weekly course to learn how to use it

  • This time Windows was just a DOS-application, nothing more ;-)

  • so modern :O

  • @doomaster1999 yet so elegant

  • Yes, I ran this from within dosbox

  • @wussie I worked with this windows 3.1... I walk trough the MS evolution! DOS was amazing! But... today is better than yesterday and tomorrow will be better than today! Always!

  • Was this on DOSBox?

  • FAT file system no thanks i want my hdd to live.

  • No start up sound? FAIL!

  • This takes me back.

  • This is what got me interested in computers in the first place.

  • i got this os on my psp...the good thing about this os is the fact that its durible and fast.barely any crashes unlike 98 and 95 but internet was still in the early ages back then so setting it up sucks

  • i stioo have all 6 of the floppy disks used to install this and the ones for cmd

  • Oh yeah, those were they days, I remember when I used em when I was a kid, I even remember using wind 2.1 in black and white, or to be honest the monitor showed only yellow and black. ;D And the microsoft text logo was like the coolest graphics you could see in that computer... Oh, btw, Microsoft didn't bother changing pain any at all... ;D

  • Lol, I still have it, on my PocketPC :)

  • Well its been 18 years since this came out. It's allot like the Windows Operating system we use today, not much has changed. It sucked back then, and it still sucks now.

  • Oh god the years I had ME were the worst of my life.

    Terrible memories with that OS.

Though maybe it wasn't the OS' fault, maybe it was the machine I was running it on.

Though I still kinda like '98. Which was the OS of my first computer.

  • shmexiii !

  • I miss the old retro days when everything technical were new and revolutionary... was so exciting to live at that time, you never knew what was going to come next..

  • yeh it looked like macs os thats why

  • i wish windows is this high tech now days

  • 80s windows = CRAP!

    90s windows (3.0 to 98) = Generally good.

00s windows (2k to 7) = Pretty good except ME, which is unreliable as hell and Vista, which just ain't quite as good as the rest.

  • @whattheheck1000 I never had many problems with ME, actually I found it quicker than 98, but I admit it had far less software support. I survived on it for a good couple of years though.

  • @thphaca It lasted me 3 days. Seriously. December 25 - 28, 2002.

  • real neat my bud jonathon would get a kick outta this he still uses it all time! lemow~

  • I took a class in learning this operating system as I liked it so much!

  • LOL the time when 8 bit color wasn't heard of, simple colors where when others colors were generated it was less of a pigment.

  • 0:37 HOLY SHIT LOOK AT THOSE GRAPHICS!

  • @zackfair73195 yeah... good or bad?

  • @zackfair73195 omg your right!

I peed ma pants at the awsome high def

  • better than vista!

  • solitaire and paint are the same :D

  • That looks better than my vertion, and I've got a windows XP!

  • Oh my. I remember that version of paint. My parents must have owned a Win 3.1 when I was young.

  • The start bar at the bottom of screen is probably the biggest change when 95 came out. To be honest, I rarely use start program bar, desktop icons are faster for me to access. I remember 3.1 have program group icon (one click to open a window full of shortcuts), and now we have folders instead.

Personally I still prefer the 3.1 layout.

  • Paint didn't change too much from 3.1 to XP.. lol

  • I don't think this is actually your "brand new laptop", it's more a VM on your brand new laptop.

  • Wasn't this realised in 1993?

  • Haha, I can write these applications in C++ and I'm only 15.

  • That's an operating system, that's way more than just some applications put together.

  • @ChRiSiMoN Oh true. A whole boot up and everything. D: Well... I can write the applications... So I'm on my way... If I don't make it into my preferred job.. I'm going to go into software...

  • my granpa has this in his veryold computer, ah, how nostalgic

  • @Ichigoli REALLY THAT OLD?!

  • takin history class

  • LOVE WINDOWS. memories........ since doom on dos

  • Ahh, memories. I've got Windows 7 now, but Windows Aero is to... i don't know. But I used XP before and I'm so used to the "Windows Luna" look and feel. If you use things for a long time, u are getting used to it. But somehow I can't get used to Windows Aero. So I patched UxTheme, so I can use Windows Luna again.

  • @marvin4578 People would pay $150 to use Aero

  • Wait what? You can use XP themes on Windows 7?

  • Wow, i acually remember that. Had it on the first PC i ever had. Amazing how the ram now have more memory than the harddisks back then. Good video!

  • i remember when I had windows 3.1 but now im getting windows 7

  • Nice timeline for windows user

    LOT exp from that

  • Ahh, Windows 3.1, I remember those days. Booted faster than XP and Vista, Mainly used DOS for about every freakin' thing. No Start Menu, no colorful wallpapers, no nothing. Just Program Manager and Trash Can (currently Recycle Bin)

  • i wonder how a pc today would handle windows 3.1 :D

  • Wow! Windows was very different back then!

  • hey your right... but think about it about 2 years ago... isnt xp still VERY different from windows 7 or vista?

  • windows went through a lot of changes even recently

  • @oxnardcollegegirl200 OMG, yes! With 4 MByte of RAM and a 293 MByte hard disk. . . . .Are you serious or joking?

  • @oxnardcollegegirl200 What do you mean "back then"? Given that most people didn't get 95 'til about '96-'97, that's only 13 years or so ago...

  • Is it abandonware or we still can't donwload it for free?

  • paint has not make so much evolution since windows 3.1

  • Ah oldschool windows, boots faster than XP and Vista

  • Its because it was a DOS program and it had hardly ANYTHING on it, not as many services that xp and vista use, nothing like a process hog/memory hog that the two are.

  • @CoolDudeClem

Take a look at 3mb file and at 7gb file...

what will unpack all aplications faster ?

  • @CoolDudeClem takes 2 MB of memory...

  • @CoolDudeClem Probably because it has less things to load than XP and Vista.

  • @CoolDudeClem Windows 3.1 don't boot, win3.1 start from a MSDOS command "win"... :)

But you right! Very, very faster than XP and VISTA!!

  • @CoolDudeClem running on his new laptop you tit!!!

  • @CoolDudeClem Only because of its simplicity.

  • The Graphics In solitaire is Mind Blowing! you can't get games like that in Vista! ^-^

  • I think windows 3.1 challenges Snow Lepard!

  • Hell yeah!

  • Well this is certainly better than Vista. Lets see if windows 7 will match up???

  • Nothing's worse than Vista. (If we leave macs away from this conversation)

  • No I think Windows ME takes the title of the "Worst Windows Release"... It was HORRIBLE

  • @LocoYoFla You tried it yourself?

  • Never used that 1

  • Don't get me started on Me.... I had that shit, and finally I blew the cd up.

  • Agreed, Windows ME was an OS that had no right existing, but did anyways. We were fortunate enough to order a computer in the brief window after the launch of ME and before XP (was like what, a year? Year and a half?). Needless to say we upgraded to xp.

  • @LocoYoFla -- Yep, 100% correct there on Windows ME.

Talk about an embarrassment to Microsoft lol

  • no, i don't think so...ME was ok but Vista was the worst Release!

  • Oh yeah I remember... When Vista was first released without the updates it was incredibly slow. It was like Microsoft just rushed to have a new version in the market without really working out the kinks.

  • @LocoYoFla obviously someone never used windows 1.0.

Actually windows and dos before 95 were the worst systems on the market.

  • Oh no, I disagree with that... Windows 3.1 and DOS were excellent operating systems for their time.

  • Hahahaha. No.

  • Dude have you ever actually used the other platforms of the time? My A1200 w/2gb HDD pisses on every other machine from the time.

  • is this windows 7? damn i think ill stick to vista

  • Read the title...

  • Windows 3.1

  • Thank you. Thank you for this trip down Memory Lane.

  • More advanced than any Mac OS

  • yeah...

    sure...

  • 3.1 was better than NT workstation 4.0 =)

  • where is SkiFree? that was the best game

  • ok,I agree that the video is cool...but...how did you make it?

    with camera?

  • virtual pc

    >_>

  • ohhh,I tfinced the Os is the real of the laptop!

    ok

  • Ah the good ol' days....

  • I still have 3.1 on my old Amstrad!

  • the paint!!!

  • It looks faster than Vista!!! OMG!!!!

  • Its wayyy faster than Vista, but its so useless and crappy, and there's so many errors that'll come up when you use it. :P

  • It's in color!!

  • Oh my God...

I remember my FIRST PC and FIRST Operating System...

    Sigh...

  • Loved Windows 3.1, this brings back some good memories.

When you we're lucky and got you're work done first the teacher used to let you use the computer, This was about grade three for me, and every time I got the chance to use it I would play Darkseed, one of the few video games I ever beat.

That computer was so slow, but it never had an error once until the motherboard died and it got tossed out.

I might now have to go pickup an old computer with win 3.1 now, thanks to the video:)

  • yeah. back then computers were slow as hell but it seemed then that they were really fast! I remember opening a text document with 500 pages and was amazed that it only took 5-6 seconds :P

  • Ah, those were the days.

Staying up late playing Solitaire or Ski Free...waiting forever for a noisy floppy disk to finish writing...only to tell you at the end that the disk is too full to continue.

    Oh yeah. Good times.

  • YiP, I still got an old computer with that windows on it, still works to. 3.1 i can sti ll get the internet to go. I had partioned this on a core i7 system that i have, it booted in 5 seconds.

  • you woke me Far Far Distant memories, from when I was kid and Playin Retallior.. wow !

  • in what way, slow as fuck and crashes all the time

  • what the hell youtube fucked up the comments again this was a response to jegesvensk, at this time mac didn't even have colour

  • I hate Macs, but they had color since the first Mac was made 1 year before Windows 1.0.

  • Yes it was slow, but I never got a crash, once

  • Windows 3.1 was the 2nd version of microsoft windows that had icons.

  • Comment removed

  • i however think thad windows 1.0 and 2.0 looks somehow better than 3.1, though it lacks colours

  • Windows 3.1 is the best looking one. I use Windows Vista ultimate 64-bit now... ugly heap of junk. Windows 3.1 is simple, clean and beautiful.

  • I guess youre into old pc stuff, huh? youre same as me, you know those new ugly smooth laptops lets say from hp or compaq? ugly piece of crap. Ibm think pad? now thats a cool thing!

  • Exactly the thinkpad looks like a laptop should look like.

  • Ok, and how about new tower pc cases? black, shiny and made so it would look like its some piece of decoration, god damn it i cant even look at them! i like the old white-piss like colour :D

And no stupid useles crap like card doors to protect the drives, lulz :D

Oh and also, windows vista sux in view, 3.1,9x,me,2k all look better, and what do you say about os/2 warp 3 or 4? thats what an operating system should look like!!!

  • The late 80'ies Macs are really nice design-wise. OS warp is not really that nice, check out older Solaris instead.

  • mmmm....BeOS... :D

  • You're my new best friend. i still use my IBM ThinkPad today.

  • You should have stop the writing after WIN :D

  • i have to much ram it wont install!!!!!!! lol lol lol llol lol

  • Man do I miss my old Acer with Windows 3.1

Haha, remember the first time I installed Wolf 3D and Doom shareware. Duke Nukem II...

I dont remember what I ever did with it. I would love to get my hands on one.

  • I'm trying to install some of my old games on Windows 3.1 on Virtual PC, but I can't seem to figure out how to install video drivers other than VGA or VGA 3.0 without messing up the video on Virtual PC. VGA only supports 16 colors, but most other drivers that are listed support 256 colors. Can anyone tell me what's going on, and help me out here?

BTW: It's interesting to see how Windows has progressed over the years. Windows XP looks totaly different from this, and has more features.

  • Paint hasnt changed much

  • Yeah, it hasn't changed much since Windows 3.1. Have to agree with that.

But hey, at least they added some more features to it when they made Windows 95. And, I'm not used to using Win 3.1's Paint. @.@
