Well, Renderman IS fast, but what's shown in this video isn't really groundbreaking. A scene more "production" like would be appreciated, hardly no one renders couple of spheres in production. A complex scene with raytraced displacement would be more fair ;)
@marktherev well u have a point...but on the other hand i do lots of commercials which are way simpler than movie production and renderman saves my ass time after time. i have found mental ray a little faster for pure raytraced scenes with heavy blurred refractions and reflections and complex shaders but only if i dont use FG, DOF or MO Blur. i would never, repeat never use mental ray for maya in production but thats another thread
@TheGennaios 3delight has a free version..u can only use 2 cores but it still blows mental ray away...also pixa educational rates are good. free for teachers (lucky me)...i just installed rendrman studio for 2012...it rocks
@kmckoy13 of course you´d see a difference but its still way way faster. for example i typically render out tests for work at 4K... recently i did a rabbit with a couple of millions hairs and sss on the ears and was rendering 4K client previews at extremely high antialiasing in about 45 seconds. there are some things which im not se good at doing yet and sometimes hard core raytrace scenes seems slower but i put this down to user error because i havent really explored how to fine tune that yet
@sebcastilho thats the nice thing about renderman...no stupid shaders. just use the maya shaders and you add attributes to them... so if your in the phong attrinute editor go to attributes, renderman, add subsurface scattering. its really easy to tweak and its fast as hell. of course renderman has a few things u got to learn too before you get comfortable with it, but uts so worth the effort...
Great video. I work with Mental ray everyday. I havent used renderman since the old days, and I've been wondering how fast modern renderman is these days compared to mental ray, because mental ray with FG, DOF, Moblur, hair, etc is PAINFULLY slow.
I respect Master Zap tremendously, but from this videoo, I have to say that Mental ray is far slower. I cant see how he can say Renderman gets slow when you throw raytracing into the mix. I would love to hear him elaborate. Mental Ray is TOO SLOW!
@JCFXSI yeah.....well ive done quite a few tests and i think there are some circumstances where mental ray is faster with very complex raytraced scenes...but thats just with raytracing and not adding in DOF or moblur.
master zap is the man. but im not gonna use MR if i can avoid it. i like my 3d as simple as possible
@chilefex I agree, I've seen the same thing. MR can be quite fast if you raytrace only. It's pretty impressive actually because it does scale well as Zap says. However when DOF, and Moblur is needed, or even blurred reflections... MR is just slow. The rasterizer can help with that but it is quite slow in general. Switching primary rays to Raytrace is still far faster (especially if no DOF, Moblur is being used. Also there is a bug in the MRay post 2d moblur, it artifacts with SSS and FG.
Holy crap, thats really fast!! Is this RM for maya 4.0?
Recently I'v tried 3delight and it was slow as hell compare to Modo's internal renderer. Now I'v created 8-balls scene (like your one) in modo (with old Phenom also) and what can I say...Modo sucks!) It takes twice as much time with still alot of noise. :(
@Ivonenko nah its renderman 3 for maya. ist the fastest renderer around. now to be honest i did a cvomemrcial a few months ago for a candy company and i had to have crap loads of blurry reflections and refraxtions and i was under a deadline so i did it in mental ray without blur or DOF. renderman was a bit slow for hard core raytracing..
@Ivonenko but i dont generally do that kind of work and iot may be that its possible but i still have to learn more about fine tuning the renderer. but i tried for a couple of days with renderman before swicthing
actually the first version they wanted chocolates and i was rendering 4k plates in renderman with sss, displacement etc in 20 seconds lolol amazing..
@Ivonenko incidentally i tried 3delight too and wasnt that impressed altho its got a great reputation...maybe it needs more tweaking. i tried it in maya and cinema 4d and was like ...gimme back my RfM
ILM (Industrial Lights & Magic) uses Renderman to render. So it has to be good.
ILM made the CGI and VFX in Transformers, Avatar, Iron Man, Pirates of The Carribbean and so on for ages. Go to their website (just google ILM) to see all their work or go to their youtube user : ILMVisualFX and you can see how they done some stuff. Its really inspiring.
yeha i know the shift W..but it still creates keyframes on channels you might not want..the more I animate the less i want stray keyframes. i always up spending time deleting them when i clean up the curves.
funny about people hating mental ray...lol....where i work people are always blabbering about how great mental ray is..i work with a softimage guy , he loves it..and alot of forums like cgtalk...its like pages and pages of mental ray recipes.
haha, brilliant -- cheers. I can do you a tiny swap; when you were comparing XSI's ability to keyframe cirtain things as an alternative to your key selected from channel box you can shift + w (or e or r) to key just translations, rotations or scale.
I laughed at the beginning when you said that Renderman was under-rated, I work in VFX and every shop I go to lusts for the day they can affort it over the 'free' Mental Ray they already have :) It'severything you say it is and more!

Hey, just wanna say thank you very much!
I am glad that I watch this video first as I decided to learn Renderman.
Your vid is clear, simple and FAST. haha~~

do you know if there is any renderman version available for autodesk maya 2012?
TheGennaios 4 months ago
@TheGennaios yes theres a version...works very nicely...also 3delight has a version... a little less intuitive than pixar but very good all the same

@TheGennaios i meant a free version!

bump up the resolution to 1080 X 1920 and you'll see a difference

@chilefex I'm just bitter because it seems they don't have this for 3DS max lol.

Thanks for this video. You've sold me on it. Now to find a UK reseller for students..

@chilefex Thanks mate, Ive got it all up and running now. Say, is there a Renderman equivalent to miss_fast_skin that I can quickly use/make?

Okay this is embarrasing... what shortcut are you using to repeat your actions at the beginning of the video when you are setting up the spheres?
