  • why do all the related videos consist of naked people :D

  • You've just made me a hero around here. Thanks for such a helpful video.

Now that my plumbing is done, I'm gonna go smoke me some pipe dope. ;)

    Rock on!

  • Now I know why I call a plumber and never attempt it myself. Reminds me of trying to learn maths at school!

  • and that trap is way too low for that drain.

  • also this guy cannot cut anything straight...

  • you dont need to use pipe dope on the slip nuts. they have a nylon washer for a reason...

  • @needmorediesel wrong wrong wrong

  • @punkrockplumbob wrong? im not wrong... its a preference. any other methods of sealing is NOT required. It's a compression fit, the nut compresses the washer tight into the joint.

  • @needmorediesel which is also why the nylon washers are tapered.... do i really need to go on?

  • this is better work then I see from plumbers.

  • From a professionals view point that was cobbled up mess.

  • @marcellinasfigaro Being a professional..please explain why a cobbled mess...I have to do this soon

    Thanks

  • 8,000 videos on how to install drain pipes but not one on how to remove old ones. I tried to remove mine and it disintegrated. I'm now without a bathroom sink.

  • good information, very helpful when installing drain pipes. Being visible is easy

  • Very educational sir. Thank you

  • This is one of the worst hack jobs I've ever seen. If you are a homeowner please PLEASE do NOT do this. The drain line from the wall is too high for this set up. It may be able to be configured so it will work but certainly not the way shown in this video. The P trap and crossover tube will hold way too much food debris, the drain WILL run slow and the kitchen will begin to STINK because of the rotting food in the drain. Not to mention the "workmanship" is dreadful. Sorry Joe try again :(

  • That video should have been titled " How not to install under sink tubular." PLease people stop making videos showing how to do things untill you learn how to do them. that was a mess and done completely wrong. It will leak at that backwards p-trap for sure it always does when a home owner does that and many more mistakes.

  • I've never used pipe dope either,I thought that's what the washer/gasket was for. Seems like it would make it a mess to take apart if you ever had to clean it.Otherwise a good video.

  • I really appreciate his simple, step by step instructions. This is the best DIY video I've seen on how to plumb under a kitchen sink.

  • If you need live online plumbing help with any plumbing project check out vpvirtualplumbing on the web

  • im sorry but that is rough!! you should measure your pipe lengths correctly and also cut straight.

  • With 139,880 downloads you would have made $13,988 at DimeStand.

  • you best be sure cutting and making it flat or your gonna have leaks

  • I have installed 100's / maybe 1000's now and I have never used pipe dope. I did notice all the cuts were anything, but straight. When cutting your first piece of pipe ; practice on a piece that you know is to long and cut off a few 1/2 inch pieces for practice. it is important that they are cut relatively straight. Biggest thing is take your time and do it nice or do it twice. Good luck and have a great day.

  • I broke off a piece of collar-fitting (PVC) whats the best way to remove that? it's a flange-type piece around the PVC pipe coming in from outside, underneath the sink.....whats the best way to Un-Glue a PVC connection? ....don't try? just make a cut on the pipe behind the broken piece?

  • Thanks for the clear instruction and descriptions provided.

  • and here I thought pipe dope was something you smoke out of a pipe?

    who knew?

  • This is a very helpful how to video. I found it very helpful in my situation.

  • Pipe dope? What for?

  • Very helpful, thanks a bunch!

  • So no duck tap huh? lol thats what i been using..

  • Oh man what a mess. Did you see the rest of the pipes under that sink! None of that work would pass a plumbing inspection!

  • Scratch that. My pipe leaks! I may need that pipe dope stuff after all...

  • IdaNoReally, I had the same problem with the rubber washer. I called Home Depot and was told it is unnecessary. All you need is the zinc nut and the thin, plastic flanged washer and it should have enough thread to fit. If it still won't fit, you probably have the wrong type of washer. I was also told that sealant is unnecessary since there is no water pressure in a drain pipe. I have absolutely no plumbing experience, but the sales associate seemed confident and professional.

  • @ekahielua lol never trust a minimum wage box store employee for trades advice. theres a reason tradesmen go to school.

  • you shouldn't reverse the short part of the trap around. the discharge level is too high and will hold excess water in the waste disposal unit and cause ventilation problems. It would most probably void your warranty too.

  • @mattykhobbs It could be done by doing two separate drains by puting a why in the wall drain, that way the garbage disp. trap would be just fine.

  • I am reconnecting the sink drain in my kitchen as it came undone. I don't want to change the basket unless I have to. I got a replacement tail piece washer but the basket strainer nut that I bought came with a rubber washer in it. Does the basket strainer nut need a rubber washer? The strainer basket does not seem to have enough thread to screw this in place with the rubber washer inside it.

  • This is an awesome video. Very helpful. Thanks.

  • what a donkey lol

  • he said dope!

  • Pipe dope is actually the name. I am not sure why, but this is often sold with the brand name ProDope.

  • Joe,

Never make the trap so low compared to its outlet. It is inviting a leak INstead use a straight outlet from the disposal to prevent this problem.

  • god, putty, i always just put the rubber between the basket strainer and sink, waste of putty

  • tell me he doesn't look like Bill Shatner..

  • how do you remove the drain cup it the pipe broke, why do you do?

  • so is it called pipe dope or what? i couldnt hear him good.

  • I'm a tile guy that occasionaly installs sinks, it seems like theres allways a leak in the drain pipes even though theres no water pressure why? I'v used liquid teflon or even silicone but with new pipes and gasqets I shouldn't have to!

  • @davetileguy the pipes probably aren't square to each other

  • no, pipe dope is a liquid thread sealant..i repeat thread sealant..so for example if you're putting pipes into fittings and so on with pvc you will use primer and cement. however in this installation with the pvc tubular just use teflon wherever there's a nut. bada bind bada boom

  • cut it out. I know you purposely sped and cut some parts

  • Slow down and show how you tighten the nuts and explain where to cut.

  • Excellent video!! I'll give it a try, just a little confused on the pipe dope thing and the alternates that would be available at the hardware store.

  • The pipe joint compound is a lubricant for the threads and the seal. It makes it easier to tighten and get a good seal. It does not cause clogs because no compound is inside the pipes.

  • dope won't harm it and many guys use it. I personally don't use it or use it very sparingly but the main error is that the garbage disposal doesn't have a seperate p-trap. this setup would never pass an inspection in the state of Wisconsin.

  • But in wisconsing my friend lol.

Do you guys really have codes ovether???

    Just jocking lol.

  • Don't worry, there are plenty of yuppies that don't want to get their hands dirty and can afford outrageous prices. Besides, do it yourselfers always screw things up and call in the pros anyway!

  • dont use pipe dope. and dont use pvc

  • EXPLAIN pipe dope. I'm assuming that's plumber trade talk for primer and cement. Please explain.

  • @nightshot103 NO NO NO. It's a teflon based thread sealant!!

  • @nightshot103 yeah don't ask home depot or Lowes for pipe dope they will give you a bottle of rosin for copper pipes. Ask for Plumbers putty. Pipe fitters use the term pipe dope

  • @nightshot103 Liquid Teflon is what it appears like he is using. His drain is bad though because the outlet is higher than the p-trap so he will have terrible drainage!

  • why wont the nut on the downspout lock tight? Another defintion would be the upper portion of the P-trap that connects directly to the pipe connected to sink--

  • Thanks Joe..I'll give it a shot.. hope it's as easy as it appears..LOL

  • Glad you posted this video as we are in the process of a kitchen makeover and your video enlightened us on how to install the new faucet.

    Kudos!

  • We don't use this pipe-dope? in the UK, the fittings we use have rubber sealing rings which compress when the back nut is tightened giving you a watertight fit. Alternatively, we use solvent-weld fittings especially for under floor installations, compression fittings are not allowed to be installed in inaccessable areas in case they leak in the future.

  • Excellent video.

  • Good info! I did'nt know that pipe dope was nessary. I will use it next time.
