    They started that long long ago. I'd say if you're younger than 160 years old, then you're probably a product of the American "dumbing down" school system. Have the actions by millions of people in Tunisia, and Egypt and the lives lost in Libya shown nothing of the evils of government? I mean, how many times have people been killed by a gunman before? let's see, bank robberies, school shootings, and other random shootings. And little kids die all the time, wether it be from drowning, getting ran over, dying of illness or cancer, starving to death, or even being beaten or choked to death.   • @AndrewDeLong The constitution's original framers were VERY careful about the role of big government in their new experiment...they just had a big dose of it as a european colony. Basic laws (to protect us from others, not from ourselves), military, public works (roads, water, power, etc.), and police force. Socialism "lite" turns into socialism "big" over time, and followed to it's end FAILS. Why not let the individual be his own master and enjoy the fruits of his own labor?

    1) The constitution was never written to detract from socialism. IN fact, the first recorded cases of socialism occurred in the mid 1800's, well after the founding of the Constitution.

    2) Socialism's roots are in fact based in the workers movements, as an attempt to gain rights denied to those workers by capitalists, who, unchecked, were worse than any government.

    3) Fact, socialism IS of the people, by the people, and for the people, historically.

    History. Learn it.

  • @AndrewDeLong Protecting worker's basic rights isn't socialism, but big unions that have actually destroyed competitiveness are.Capitalism is effectively harnessing natural human initiative or"greed" as some would call it, for the greater good. Anti trust laws actually protect the true spirit of capitalism,. by keeping commerce competitive. Best product at the lowest price. Socialism is it's own worst enemy, it destroys intitiative and there's downward spiral of commerce and goods...

  • @wilsonspaulding Actually, you're dead wrong on that one. The socialist movement in any country that has had it has always started out on the basis of protecting workers rights, especially in the face of corrupt capitalists and governments. The fact stands that, historically, pure socialism, just as well as pure capitalism unhindered, always destroys itself. A "light" form of each is actually a healthy mix of the two.

The constitution promotes the concept that if the rights of the individual are protected, the person can reach their full potential and society can't help but benefit. It's like societal responsibilty begins in the family and spreads out from there. Socialism goes the other way and promotes the governent as being the boss of the individual and telling a person what to do, how to behave, etc.and promising to take care of him. Most voters still don't want that.

    That is because it is not mentioned in the constitution at all. The appearance of socialism as you or I might know it takes place well outside the mindset and time of the constitutional framers. But, in fact, the constitution is commonly (and wrongly) used to detract from the idea of socialism. And, as I have witnessed, mostly by conservatives.

  • I thought it was a great speech. The people there can applaud if they want. It was an excellent speech. It doesn't matter whether you agree with someone's political beliefs, you can agree to disagree by being respectful without making it personal or being evil or making the other person the enemy!

Watch a funeral procession in Louisiana, Many here have friends and relatives who've told them "Don't cry at my Funeral celebrate my life and enjoy yourselves." This Memorial Transcended Bitterness and sadness, We Cheer for the Spirit of those Taken away and we cheer for the Survivors. This was a Celebration of Life.

  • Sadly, this tragedy is not momentous, or grave enough to serve as the wake up "bitch-slap" we need to quell the vitriolic rancor amongst our citizenry. Our current trajectory is towards civil war, maybe not next year or even next decade; but if we do not change course it is inevitable. Barring a nationwide natural cataclysm,(not regional like 9-11, or Katrina), or an war on our soil instigated by a foreign aggressor; I do not see a particular event serving as a galvanizing force for our good.

    What a bunch of numbskulls cheering at a memorial for the deceased. Hey I wonder if and when their grandma, child, mom or dad dies will they be cheering and wearing poli-shirts?

  • @actonbath this was not just a memorial it was a celebration of life and heroism i agree at times i was like stop the yelling....but at the same time it showed true American Resolve we can honor the dead and the gift of life at the same time and showed the world AGAIN why we are the greatest country on the planet....

  • I think it's a nice memorial speech and told us about the people who died or were ijured and some acts of bravery at the time of the shooting. More than I heard on the regular news. What I would like to know is, can any psycho get his hands on guns; scary.

  • A beautiful memorial speech that is not appreciated by the Obama hating right wing! I missed it last night & because the right wing talk show hosts were putting it down so much, I had to check it out myself & make my own conclusions – a great speech by a brilliant orator.
