What matters to me are IIHS crash data (not DOT data) and frequency of repair rate. For that I rely only on Consumer Reports' survey of their million plus respondents. Those together with Consumers' Union engineers' testing data guide me. Over many years of buying and owning cars, this is the only approach that I have found worthwhile. I have recommended it to all of my friends when asked and they have been grateful for the advice.
the Honda should have been put in 1st. the only thing that he could say was wrong with the Accord, was that the styling was getting old, which is a pretty pathetic excuse.
All comes down to personal likes. The VW and Honda look so plain jane next to the Sonata. Did anyone mention price? Sonata wins there too. Sonata isn't perfect but for most is the best bang for the diminishing US Buck.
This review is biased. Honda should be No.1. Passat is cheap and made of cheap plastic interiors and historically passats are highly unreliable. of course there are a few exceptions. Hondas are highly reliable and comfortable ride.
I just bought a 3.6 SEL Passat and I love it. The ride, engine, DSG transmission, Fender sound system, and cavernous interior all make this car one of the best values in quite a long time. Love my V-dub!
Lot of fan boys on here that can't respect that VW used some magic (and their huge buying power) to engineer and build a great car that isn't premium car money any more
I cry foul, there is blatant bias against Hyundai. Check the facts and other reviews of the 2.0t. I guess this is the Fox News of automotive journalism!
@rafikwa umm.......Europe gets the same car. They didn't "american-ise" it, they just realized that they were ridiculously over-pricing it and cut down a bit to get more sales. lol honestly... the Passat handles better, performs better but also has a better ride comfort and feel. The Hyundai is just a car with a better fuel economy and cheap interior.
Anyone else notice that VW has stripped the rear AC vents from the Passat? And the interior design is barely improved over the old car. Cheap and lame. And I think they made a huge misstep in removing the 4Motion AWD option -- the Subaru Legacy remains the only non-luxury mid-size with AWD. Suck.
"were not sure if the V6 accord is worth the extra money" What are you smoking... I have one sure, but in the video you have every option available for it, of course you're going to think it's pricey. Did I mention the V6 gets better mileage than the four cylinder? And as to the screen resolution, to look at maps it's perfectly fine I'm not going to watch a movie on that thing, and I can't see any pixels in map mode... what are you talking about? I do agree with the lumbar support however.
@aqwayne I know you're a fan, but he's right on both counts: The Accord's fuel economy is unimpressive (that decade-old V6, just like VW's old-as-dirt VR6, needs a refresh!); and the resolution of the SatNav screen (a hand-me-down from the 2004 Acura TL) is indeed piss-poor. If you're happy with the $28,000 you paid for that crappy, low-res LCD that's fine, but it's hardly fair to bitch at C&D for expecting better.
Hyundai sonata is just trying to win over customer with wanna be Mercedes exterior looks but what it lacks are the important factors of a car which are reliability and efficiency
@hailherrosner Can't argue with you there. NO ONE SHOULD BUY A VW without first buying the Consumer Reports Car Buyers Guide to see their horrible reliability record. Honda, by the same measure, is the most reliable in this roundup. But while the Passat is at best bland, those ginormous halogen headlamps and the clown-car rear end on the Accord? Come on! Oh, and I'd pick the Hyundai for reliability & coverage -- 100,000 miles vs the 36,000 for the Honda.
@PassionOfTheMan most mechanics say that they start falling apart after 100,000 miles a honda accord just went 1,000,000 miles and is still runing fine so beat that hyundai
Yes, I've owned euros. Love them, but they are never reliable than the Japanese cars. Euro cars require a lot of little maintanences. I'm a believer in PM's, but they get annoying after awhile, when you can have a Honda or Toyota which will go forever (almost unblievable sometimes).
Consumers Report stated that Euro cars have the worst reliability. American cars have improved but Japanese cars have the best reliability according to their statistics data.
@superherosatlive Consumer report are the stupidest way to determine the value of a car. Just think about it, in America most cars are American than Japanese and after that European so who the bloody hell do you think is going to take the most votes.
I've seen many surveys where expensive high-end cars get the lowest ratings, how do you think that happens, because they're are bad, no, it's because fewer people own them.
@3XICS 1)My comment was about reliability not about 'value' 2) Are you assuming American cars take the most votes because there are more American cars in America? Then why Japanese made are still leading, not American? 3)Reliability is not about voting. It's about car that performs with less fail parts. 4) high-end cars failed too. My friends bought 2 new BMWs and he has so many problems with his cars. They have to be fixed and takes days or weeks for parts to arrive. Such a hassle!
@rforracing UM, NO. Car and Driver got 5.7 0-60, 14.2 second 1/4 mile @ 100.9 mph, and 119 feet 60 to 0 mph in the 2012 Passat 3.6 SEL with the Dual Clutch transmission. it's the Sonata Turbo that can't keep up with the Passat in performance although the Sonata probably does have better reliablity and has a better warranty.
How much did VW pay you guys to make this comparison? VW was known for trendy designs, this new Passat is so horribly outdated looking. An overpriced Jetta at best and even the jetta is not that great looking either.
@ robbyja Yeah like i said, i have i do own a hyundai, the tdi is good, it has a great angine that can go 300k easy, like most diesel engines, every other VW that has a gas engine i would not touch for many reasons. I never said the passat was ugly just dont think its gas engine will last as long as a hyundai or honda. Thats my opinion bud, good luck with yours.

Sonata's 2.0T was proving to be heavy on gas? Car and Driver must be retarded. It has proved to give the best fuel economy in the midsized sedan segment.
I guess they were too busy driving the Sonata fast because Accord and Passat cant really keep up with the Sonata 2.0T
@rforracing Exactly. They didn't even go over which car is faster, 2.0T? or the other two V6 vechicles? They just didn't want to say Sonata 2.0T is faster. What kind of comparison is this? They don't provide facts, yet just talk bullshit. They shouldn't have mentioned anything about Sonata 2.0T defeating the purpose of 4 cylinder and using a lot of gas, because it's exactly the opposite. The 2.0T uses much less gas than any other V6 class in the market so far, having same mpg as camry 4 cylinder
@JdubsFTW Yep agree with you, but Sonata will obviously have better fuel economy than Accord or Passat. Actually if they had tested Sonata 2.0T SE instead of Limited it would have performed better on the skidpad, slalom and 0-60 because of the sport tuned suspension and less weight.
Not to mention SE is cheaper than the Limited trim.
@rforracing WHAT IS THE SHIT THAT YOU ARE TALKING THE ACCORD HAS MORE TORQUE THAN THE SONATA THE SONATA IS A KORAN CAR THAT IS CHEAP AND FOR POOR PEOPLE
@vepulan7 Are you retarded? 4 cylinder uses less gas than a V6 and is a lighter engine. Secondly, turbo uses exhaust gases (before they exit the catalytic converter) to power turbines which increases air flow. It improves power and barely reduces fuel economy.
Do YOUR RESEARCH DUMBASS. You're just another dumb youtuber who likes to talk shit.
Sonata all the way, Accords were good in the 90s but they have no clue how to build a sexy car anymore, honda is dead. I would however pick that dead accord over a VW any day, those things are cheap and just dont last. Ewww
@Mausome Well, the half of Audi cars comes with 4 cylinder turbo engines including A3, A4, A5, and A6. As well as the affordable luxury cars with high demand and sales such as c-250 and 528i. I guess you just learned that many "people buy 4 cylinder & turbo versions of cars."
why people from united states think that america is united state.....is not and it got to stop ........the correct is united states of north american ........
mexican are amercian to and south american so ya have to stop said american because is not the right way to said it..
lol completely biased. sonata turbo has the BEST mileage compare to ALL v6 competitors. lol Of course, they'd go through all the details of passat, but not the sonata. They didn't even go over which car is the fastest. Sonata turbo's acceleration beats accord v6 as well as 2012 Volkswagen Passat VR6. These guys are paid to make this biased videos.
@yoonyong8925 Besides the fact that it's not even true that the Sonata is the fastest of them, there are much, much more things to a car that matter besides speed and mileage. But who am I talking to, some kid that starts all his sentences with 'lol'. What do you know about handling, ride quality or things like resale value. I'm not denying that the Sonata is a good car but you should accept the fact that there's some truth in the things said in this video and that the Passat is possibly better.
@ratmtbola I just laugh, kid. I just laugh. It is the fact that sonata turbo is slightly faster than an accord v6 and a passat. Obviously, u dont even know what you are talking about. I was gonna stop talking, but your "opinions" without any support? I feel like i'm listening to a kid going mad. "It's not even true that the sonata is the fastest of them." go ahead and do some research. Until you prove your OWN statement, don't come back and bitch like a baby.
@yoonyong8925 1. Stop calling me kid. I'm probably twice as old as you, who tends to start all of his sentences with 'lol'.
2. Okay, I was wrong on the quarter mile times. But good job at ignoring things like the handling, ride quality or resale value. But again, who am I talking to. Either a small kid that doesn't know about that kind of things and just looks at the numbers or a huge Hyundai fanboy that doesn't accept any kind of criticism about his beloved car.
@ratmtbola I like how some of your comments are flagged as spam by people. About handling? Let me tell you another thing that you didn't even know about. This guy drove a Limited 2.0T. The limited version is designed to give comfortable handling. They have a completely different handling system for the Sonata SE 2.0T. They handle like sports cars, because the Sonata SE is sports tuned. If you want to look for a better handling, go ride a SE 2.0T then come back and talk to me.
@yoonyong8925 1. Not a single of my comments was flagged, I just removed them because Youtube fucked up and tripple posted stuff. Funny enough some of YOUR bullshit comments actually WERE flagged as spam.
2. 'Different handling system'? HAHAHA. Sorry but that got to be the most stupid thing I've ever heared about a car.
Seriously boy ... you're just some shallow Hyundai fanboy that is easy to impress by some meaningless numbers. Have fun with your car that will lose 90% of its value in 5 years.
@ratmtbola Hey, kid. If you don't know how to prove things, then fk off. Yes, SE has different handling. Like I said they are sports tuned-lower suspension with power steering wheel. Btw, just because you love VW, you can't just say shit about other cars when you can't prove anything. You havent given me any FACT to support. Kid, you truely are pathetic and I hope ur kids dont grow up like you. The only thing you have proved is that you can't even argue any better than a 12 year old kid
@ratmtbola besides, "good job at ignoring things like the handling, ride quality or resale value" Okay, people probably reported your comments because you write comments like KIDS. Like I told you OVER and OVER, when you say things like this, support your statement with facts. Do I have to do all these research for you, kid?Besides, it's your own argument? Lol btw. hyundai gives you a "guaranteed resale value" for the next 5 years. Sales are higher than VW? It means their reputation is better.
Come on. It is weird because in videos reviewed by other car magazines Hyundai turbo beat others in terms of gas mileage, and other categories as well. Is he from VW/Honda dealership?
In the End the VW will have the worst reliability just like every other VW in the past.
If Your only going to keep the Car for less than 60k miles, get the VW, if you are the type that will drive a car for 100k or 200k miles then go with the hyundai or the honda.
@matrixloader you are so wright.... as much as i like vw my family has had 3 vdubs 2 jetta GLs 1.8t and a Passat 2005 passat wagen TDI and all three had the exact same issue at around the same mileage. the transmission went on all three cars at around 100k to 120k. But vw's drive much nicer than the competition but will never last as long.
@matrixloader Bullshit ... I've owned 2 VW's so far and there have been atleast 6 others in my family and around my friends. Each of the cars went well over 100k miles without any problems.
And who wants to drive a Hyundai for 200k miles anyways? They start to look dated after just a couple of years. 5 year old Hyundais already look like shit. Unless you drive from the west coast to the east cost once a month or something you wanna sale your Hyundai when it has over 100k miles on it ...
@matrixloader I agree with you on that! In the past, comsumer reports rated the VW Passat as below or worse than average when it comes to reliability. But who knows, this new Passat could be different. But the champs of reliability will continue to be cars from Asia! The Honda Accord (despite it's bland and dated looks) has proven that time and time again. And now the Sonata is seeing that same success.
@matrixloader and im assuming you've owned VW's in the past so you can confidently say from PERSONAL experience that the VW has the worst reliability compared to other cars right you owned right? because im guessing you dont own a VW and you own shit ass hyundai wanna be premium car because you cant afford the better premium products and therefor you bag the product out to compensate for your cheap ass and make you feel better that you bought a "superior" (read cheaper) product.
@robbyjai What makes you think that hyundai's cars are cheap products and VW's not? lol wat an idiot.. Keep "guessing." Obviously you dont know how to argue. At least prove your statement with facts to support. By your logic, I can assume that "You don't own a Hyundai and you own shit ass VW wannabe car cuz u cant afford the better premium products and therefore you bag the product out to compensate for your cheap ass and make you feel better that you bought a "superior" (read cheaper) product.
@robbyjai People are always quick to jump to conclusions on youtube, to answer your question i actually currently own 4 cars in my family, we have a 2002 VW jetta TDI (diesel) the tdi is by far the most reliable Vw that VW makes and most fuel efficient, thats why i have it, wold not buy any other VW. We also have a 2001 hyundai elantra and a 1995 honda civic, both reliable, and a 05 nissan altima that has had some issues but its ok.
@matrixloader people quick to jump to conclusion ???? nah i dont think so buddy. a quick scan of your youtube page previously shows a page slapped full of Hyundai elantra videos which I'll assume YOU own, and a whole shit load of likes for hyundais. so i'll assume you like your hyundais. As for you owning a VW and saying that its the most reliable VW .. well that contradicts your statement that VW has the worst reliability. So what is it ??????? is it shit or is it good ??? make up your mind
@robbyjai Yeah like i said, i have i do own a hyundai, the tdi is good, it has a great angine that can go 300k easy, like most diesel engines, every other VW that has a gas engine i would not touch for many reasons. @matrixloader My friend has owned a 2003 Passat up to this day and he has not had any major problems except for the oil pump which all 1.8T engines have. I wouldn't say its unreliable, especially the newer ones. Stay away from DSG though.

Yes, I've owned euros. Love them, but they are never reliable than the Japanese cars. Euro cars require a lot of little maintanences. I'm a believer in PM's, but they get annoying after awhile, when you can have a Honda or Toyota which will go forever (almost unblievable sometimes).
stvynix 4 months ago
Consumers Report stated that Euro cars have the worst reliability. American cars have improved but Japanese cars have the best reliability according to their statistics data.
superherosatlive 4 months ago
@superherosatlive Consumer report are the stupidest way to determine the value of a car. Just think about it, in America most cars are American than Japanese and after that European so who the bloody hell do you think is going to take the most votes.
I've seen many surveys where expensive high-end cars get the lowest ratings, how do you think that happens, because they're are bad, no, it's because fewer people own them.
3XICS 4 months ago
@3XICS 1)My comment was about reliability not about 'value' 2) Are you assuming American cars take the most votes because there are more American cars in America? Then why Japanese made are still leading, not American? 3)Reliability is not about voting. It's about car that performs with less fail parts. 4) high-end cars failed too. My friends bought 2 new BMWs and he has so many problems with his cars. They have to be fixed and takes days or weeks for parts to arrive. Such a hassle!

I took a look at all three of these vehicles and the Sonata is piont blank the best. Studies show.

Sal30 4 months ago
How much did VW pay you guys to make this comparison? VW was known for trendy designs, this new Passat is so horribly outdated looking. An overpriced Jetta at best and even the jetta is not that great looking either.

Sonata's 2.0T was proving to be heavy on gas? Car and Driver must be retarded. It has proved to give the best fuel economy in the midsized sedan segment.
I guess they were too busy driving the Sonata fast because Accord and Passat cant really keep up with the Sonata 2.0T
rforracing 5 months ago 24
@rforracing Exactly. They didn't even go over which car is faster, 2.0T? or the other two V6 vechicles? They just didn't want to say Sonata 2.0T is faster. What kind of comparison is this? They don't provide facts, yet just talk bullshit. They shouldn't have mentioned anything about Sonata 2.0T defeating the purpose of 4 cylinder and using a lot of gas, because it's exactly the opposite. The 2.0T uses much less gas than any other V6 class in the market so far, having same mpg as camry 4 cylinder
yoonyong8925 5 months ago
@rforracing when he drives the way he is of course the 2.0t is gna suck all that gas up

@rforracing the sonata has terrible handling, ride, and road noise compared to that of the Passat. IMO. and yes, i have driven both.
JdubsFTW 3 months ago
@JdubsFTW Yep agree with you, but Sonata will obviously have better fuel economy than Accord or Passat. Actually if they had tested Sonata 2.0T SE instead of Limited it would have performed better on the skidpad, slalom and 0-60 because of the sport tuned suspension and less weight.
Not to mention SE is cheaper than the Limited trim.

You're just another dumb youtuber who likes to talk shit.

lol completely biased. sonata turbo has the BEST mileage compare to ALL v6 competitors. lol Of course, they'd go through all the details of passat, but not the sonata. They didn't even go over which car is the fastest. Sonata turbo's acceleration beats accord v6 as well as 2012 Volkswagen Passat VR6. These guys are paid to make this biased videos.
yoonyong8925 5 months ago
@yoonyong8925 Besides the fact that it's not even true that the Sonata is the fastest of them, there are much, much more things to a car that matter besides speed and mileage. But who am I talking to, some kid that starts all his sentences with 'lol'. What do you know about handling, ride quality or things like resale value. I'm not denying that the Sonata is a good car but you should accept the fact that there's some truth in the things said in this video and that the Passat is possibly better.
ratmtbola 5 months ago
@ratmtbola I just laugh, kid. I just laugh. It is the fact that sonata turbo is slightly faster than an accord v6 and a passat. Obviously, u dont even know what you are talking about. I was gonna stop talking, but your "opinions" without any support? I feel like i'm listening to a kid going mad. "It's not even true that the sonata is the fastest of them." go ahead and do some research. Until you prove your OWN statement, don't come back and bitch like a baby.

2. Okay, I was wrong on the quarter mile times. But good job at ignoring things like the handling, ride quality or resale value. But again, who am I talking to. Either a small kid that doesn't know about that kind of things and just looks at the numbers or a huge Hyundai fanboy that doesn't accept any kind of criticism about his beloved car.
ratmtbola 5 months ago
@ratmtbola I like how some of your comments are flagged as spam by people. About handling? Let me tell you another thing that you didn't even know about. This guy drove a Limited 2.0T. The limited version is designed to give comfortable handling. They have a completely different handling system for the Sonata SE 2.0T. They handle like sports cars, because the Sonata SE is sports tuned. If you want to look for a better handling, go ride a SE 2.0T then come back and talk to me.
yoonyong8925 5 months ago
@yoonyong8925 1. Not a single of my comments was flagged, I just removed them because Youtube fucked up and tripple posted stuff. Funny enough some of YOUR bullshit comments actually WERE flagged as spam.
2. 'Different handling system'? HAHAHA. Sorry but that got to be the most stupid thing I've ever heared about a car.

The only thing you have proved is that you can't even argue any better than a 12 year old kid
yoonyong8925 5 months ago
@ratmtbola besides, "good job at ignoring things like the handling, ride quality or resale value" Okay, people probably reported your comments because you write comments like KIDS.

Unless you drive from the west coast to the east cost once a month or something you wanna sale your Hyundai when it has over 100k miles on it ...
ratmtbola 5 months ago
@ratmtbola I have driven an accent from 1998.... so bullshit about Hyundais no reliable? do u still live in the 1980's?
jxtsful 5 months ago
@jxtsful When did I ever say that Hyundai's aren't reliable? Illiteracy much?
ratmtbola 5 months ago
@matrixloader I agree with you on that! In the past, comsumer reports rated the VW Passat as below or worse than average when it comes to reliability. But who knows, this new Passat could be different. But the champs of reliability will continue to be cars from Asia! The Honda Accord (despite it's bland and dated looks) has proven that time and time again. And now the Sonata is seeing that same success.
RJBbass2000 5 months ago
