Just read about a study that showed sitting at a 90 degree angle is especially harmful to the lower discs in the back over time. Supposedly people that sat at a 135 degree angle fared better. It might make sense because I've started to sit straight for the past couple of weeks and my lower back is pretty painful now.
I Can't stand it when I see people that hunch over, it bugs the shit out of me! I notice this all day long and it drives me nuts how people can be so clueless about such a simple thing like standing and sitting up straight, and then they think that it's normal to be all hunched over at a 75 degree angle when they're older.
I do realize the importance of good posture and I not only have to work on sitting straight I have to work on walking and standing straight (or in an upright positon) I mainly have a posture issue standing still for any length of time.. I am working hard to retrain my body for good posture again! Thanks for your Video!
@kimtawalk remember to keep your core engaged. your abs, obliques and your lumbar spine are meant to stabilize your posture. if you remember this you will be more aware of it and it'll make it easier :)
@kimtawalk for sure! there are a ton of steps to take in order to fix our lifestyle problems...it's such a shame that kids spend decades in school and aren't taught how to stay healthy. physically, mentally or spiritually :(
Indeed. Iconsidered making a video of this same nature since almost everyone I encounter has no idea what good posture is. Those who ask me to share my kung fu with them are forced to begin paying attention to posture because it is the root of good kung fu. Though I encourage pelvis forward to almost erase the lubar curve so that you can more easily act as a conduit between yuor opponent and the ground while using the least amount of energy and muscle.
Lol, not very convincing having the fit guy as your subject of display and calling the way he sits lazy. I'm gonna go out of my way here and say he's in better shape then either of these goofs narrating the video, not only that but chances are he could kick the shit out of both of you.
@TheOmegaeyes Are you serious? Sure he's fit but the whole point of the video is that people need to pay attention to posture and keeping decent form....he's simply there for demonstration purposes. I guess he probably shouldn't listen when his doctor tells him that his blood pressure is too high...cause we all know he could totally beat the shit out of his doctor. lol
@2003SCT Well, in my opinion the video is useless for people with chronic back pain or disorders like scoliosis. What about people who've had surgery or been in an accident, abnormal curvature of the spine like I have? Some of us can't sit perfectley aligned. The video was in poor taste, calling the guy lazy? He looks FAR from lazy and there's likely NOTHING wrong with his back or neck.
@TheOmegaeyes in your case you should be working on fixing it instead of accepting it as it is. I've also had scoliosis, besides my chiropractor doing cupping to relieve acid build up he also put me onto stability exercises on a Swiss ball, foam roller to relieve the "Stress" and other holistic remedies. it works, it just takes time. I am an athlete and this saved my life
@ArthurKnoqOut I've been to multiple chiropractors, had decompression treatment, PT, acupuntcure and nothing has really done much in the way of continual releif. I've not heard of cupping but I will have to look into it. I've not even been diagnosed with scoliosis per se but I have an abnormal curvature of the spine and a retrograded right hip. The problems go all the way to my feet having flat feet is also a problem. I'm glad to hear you're getting some relief, been an ongoing uphill battle.
@TheOmegaeyes i also have a flat right foot so my problem is on the right side of my body. Try cupping it will eliminate a lot of the acid and pressure built up! also look into a foam roller for in-between visits :)
@TheOmegaeyes as I respect your opinion, I must completely disagree with your statement. First off Charles is a friend and athlete that works out with us, he is by no means lazy, that was a joke obviously, considering his strength and build. It was all in fun. But he does suffer from upper back, low back and shoulder pain, mostly due to posture and muscle imbalances.
@ceep03 Oh, well my appologies. I wasen't aware it was in a joking manner. I have the same issues with the muscle imbalances but I have not been told I have scoliosis, just a chiropractor told me I have an abnormal curve starting from about my mid back. I have had problems on going with spasms. I tend to think it starts from my feet (flat feet) and into my right hip which is retrograded forward conciderably. I really wish there was a way to re align everything.
@2003CT 2nd: As a medical professional working with numerous patients with chronic back pain, scoliosis, & post surgical pts, POSTURE is still the single most important thing you can do to keep these disorders from progressing or perpetuating degeneration. All of my pt with scoliosis 1st address the importance of proper alignment even if it is impossible for the spine to achieve this due to abnormal curvature or a fused joint.
@2003CT ...placing the spine in the best possible alignment and good posture is essential in allowing the muscles, ligaments and tendons to biomechanically work efficiently during the course of the day. Correct POSTURE is the 1st step in managing pain, ms spasms, and movement dysfunctions. Without this proper alignment the body will be subject to strains and stresses that it cannot manage thus leading to continued dysfunction and disability.
Awesome video! I used to have lower back pain and recently got a disc herniation (L5/S1) and I'm blaming my bad posture as well as Judo (performed with bad posture). I now sit straight and try to be straight all the time. Could you please mention exercises to improve flexibility of the hamstrings and in general and also how to improve core muscles which together can cause bad posture and lower back pain? I would greatly apreciate it. Far too many people have lower back pain or disc herniations.
This is interesting, I always wondered why I had upper back pain. Most of the time people complain about lower back pain. But I don't understand why it never bothers me until I wake up in the mornings. Doesn't hurt when I'm in the computer chair, but it's as stiff as a board when I wake up. Always feels like i need to pop it too, even though I just popped it.

Good video, Dr. Brent Smith from smith family chiropractic showed me good posture and also some things to do to keep your head over our shoulders for good neck bend.
