hmm.. 2:45 two guys have (induced) malfunctions.. neither of them properly executed the malfunction drill, they just racked the slide. An unseated magazine would have led to another failure. There's no point to training if you only ingrain bad habits.
Nice video, I can't wait until I can carry. It sucks to be young and without the security of anything more than a knife. Anyway, thanks for the video!
you guys talk all this stuff about shooting in all this different ways , let me tell you this when it comes down to shooting in a life or death time it don't matter just make sure you know how to put lead on the dam target !
@rodneyreal38 That's exactly why we "talk all that stuff"! Firing from below or above your target, and your orientation to that target requires different aim-points.Someone begins firing in a public place, the first thing you should be doing is moving to cover and presenting your weapon, as you move, you fall, the gunman's attention is on you, you hurriedly draw your firearm to shoot, if you don't compensate for your position-YOU WILL MISS! and that gets the wrong people shot. You are now a liability
I think that these types of classes should be a prerequisite to CCW. Both my parents have CCW, and especially for my mother. I don't think that it's enough. You don't need to just be familiar with your gun you need to know it inside out, upside down, backwards, and sideways. So that when your life is on the line, you come out on top. Great video Sootch, love your channel.
Man, wish ida known i would have loved to go! Please PM me the next time! I would love to have a job teaching stuff like that. We need to hook up sometime soon! Love the vids man!
if only hehe maybe sometime in my life i will be able to afford the move. I am being optimistic when it comes to this child hood dream/desire of mine. :-)
Americans need guns to defend themselves and their freedom from their own government these days, so you may want to think twice about wishing to be american
thats why i train with the cheapest possible ammo like herters. because they are consistent with at least 1 f2f in 15. its great for training failures. only use the good ammo for your carry.
@carolinagrills ..Yeah....I think after you have 1000 rounds through your primary pistol, things should be just about instinctive. I'm thinking I could probably strip and reassemble my 1911 blindfolded. lol
Good video, great advice! Everyone should get some training. We shouldn't be REQUIRED to take any training in order to carry, but I can't recommend training enough. Also, one of these days I'll take my own advice, since it is reinforced by Mrs. Tinocker, and take some training courses for myself.
were they doing edged weapon vs drawing a gun there? love workin with that. always a major threat when an aggressor has a weapon, any weapon for that matter, makes a world of difference to keep movin' while drawing, charging, and discharging the weapon. we train like that all the time.
sootch you and nutnfancy are in my opinion 2 of the best reviews and over all level headed men on youtube teaching the general public about firarms and the safety of them great review i was thing on getting a Sig 2022 any suggestiongs?
Did they not encourage the "tap and rack" method of dealing with a non-fire? I just noticed in the two short clips you showed that neither of you tapped the magazine.
Also, Moving, one-handed, non-dominate shooting. Whoa! I've never practiced that.
why in god's name would you go at a pistol shooting training camp unless you are a police officer or a soldier? What are you 10 ? Where do you plan to use your pistol ? defense against angry rotting tomatoes? Anyway on the bright side , since people are IDIOTICALLY allowed to bear arms in America, it's a good thing they are at least getting familiar with their pistol to avoid shooting a toe off.
I believe it is safe to say, that when even Sootch says that he had a non-jam range day, that little fact of a "looming jam", has moved me to carry a J-frame revolver, instead of my camo BHP, or Witness semi pistol. Yes, I know "5 rounds vs 6,7,8,9,13,15". I've seen so many 9mm JHP-not-doing-as-engineered, that the old 38 Special 158gr-wadcutter/semiwadcutter still works. My CCW class DID teach those things. Practice, know your gun, muscle memory, aim low, put them down.
I am about to make a similar video re: the NRA home defense class I took yesterday... So much more in depth than the CCW class... Talked about shooting multiple targets... Shooting with speed and accuracy.. Home defensive strategies... Well worth the time and money!
I'm sure HPR is good it just cost to damn after a normal day at the range I would have spent enough on ammo to buy another gun. I'll have to stick to my Russian and blazer :(
I concur with your thoughts on this subject, Sootch. I've barely been a gun owner for a year but have taken an NRA Basic Handgun course, NRA Pistol for Home Defense, and a level 1 & 2 Tactical handgun course locally. Our local CA ranges pretty much only allow us to practice the basics of markmanship, but to really learn to run our guns, we have to take tactical firearms courses. Much more fun than just plinking. Been using a CZ P-01 in these courses and it has functioned 100%.
@sootch00 I highly reccomend you reload the gun parallel to your face and the target, because if you look down while reloading when your threats generally in front of you, you have to worry about looking in 2 directions, where if you just center the gun towards your face while doing the reload it will benefit you because you could do 2 critical things while looking in 1 direction.
The thing I see most people fault out on is they read "gunfighting", stop at "gun", master the mechanical aspects, and consider themselves finished. When I teach I stress that the skill is FIGHTING first and foremost, and that the weapon is secondary to terrain reading, body mechanics and observation of the opponent. Adding weapon mechanical skills into that makes it a whole working system.
I agree with you! I took a 4 day defensive hand gun course at Front Sight in Navada and after taking that I think everyone that plans to carry should take a course like that because you learn for more than just a CCW class!!!
Mike and Reggie out there at SC Gun School are2 great guys and really know their business. Haven't met Ron, but if he is working with them, he's top notch. Looks like you had some serious fun.
My shooting range allows you to stand or sit and shoot at one target with no more than 1 shot per second. I should add it's also the only shooting range here. Yeah, I have to move.
@Brick12343 No way, if I pulled my shotgun out in my backyard and started cranking off rounds SWAT would be there before I could finish typing this comment lol
Sootch love your videos man, this one really hit home about knowing your firearm and how to work it incase of a misfire. Thank you for all the work that you do to help us learn.
I would not downplay the importance of encouraging people to go to the range or get their CCW. If that is all people can do it is still good to stay active with these activities. I know you probably did not mean it that way but it kind of came across that you were downplaying the role of CCW and range practice.
@ArtisanTony Hey Tony, In no way do I want to downplay CCW or range practice. On the other hand, I think self defense training far exceeds basic range practice. It's just moving to the next level. I applaud anyone who takes the first step in gun ownership, so anything more is a good thing. Rock on Bro~
I couldn't agree more. It is really sad how many conceal-carry permit holders are out there who don't train. As a certified instructor, I try and stress the importance of quality training, not just going to the range and shooting. I don't think the amount of responsibility as a conceal-carry holder really sets into people's minds. They carry the firearm without really mentally preparing themselves for the "moment of truth".
Thanks Sootch for the fine vid, a most important subject and of much greater interest than watching the countless (and mostly useless) YouTube paper-punching exercises we always see out there. Looking forward to further videos on top-notch training like this.

@delta66able Problem with that is anti-gun politicians will jump on it making the quals & red tape impossible to pass. Look at NYC for example. If you were every late paying a parking ticket, the police can deny your application for a concealed carry permit. May issue permit laws are anti-2nd amendment, that's what your enabling, so I have to disagree with it.
