  • Mary just didn't have a good life. First she moves from Wisconsin to Minisota, then she gets kicked by a horse and needs surgury, surgury didn't go well so she needed it again, grandmother died, got cheated on, Jack died, went blind, child died, blind school burned, another child died. Poor Mary. Laura lost a child to, but didn't have as worse life as Mary.

  • LHOTP is MY FAVROTE SHOW EVER!

  • 'see you downstairs'. no you wont adam, you'll be near her and listen to her voice!

  • I felt so sorry for Mary and Adam. They loved that baby boy so much.

  • As much as I want to watch this episode I hate it at the same time. It's just too much to think of Alice and the baby burning in the fire. Horrible.

  • I want to know why it took all afternoon and evening for the fire to catch. And why Albert felt all the blame was his... yes he was smoking, too, but that had been the other boy's idea AND the other boy was the one who put the lit pipe in the box..

  • I want to know why they didn't take the baby with them when Adam came upstairs to get mary and the baby. The poor thing was right there! They left that baby and went downstairs with the other children. I would have grabbed my baby and never let go as soon as there was smoke! sheesh I hate that part, it ruined the whole story because now can't feel sorry for mary and Adam.

  • ahh..

the irony of the cheerful happy opening...

  • LOL at James' prayer! =D

  • this reminds me of "the hogan family" episode where the hogans's house was burned badly by a fire that was caused by old worn wires in a lamp

  • why is that, in the background when the kids are playing, they have the same voices and sentences?

    They think we're stupid :P

  • I want to know what sadistic person came up with this episode. Come on! A baby burning to death in a fire? That's cruel.

  • I believe they made this episode mainly because Hersha Paraday, who played Mrs. Garvey, wanted out of her contract. So they killed her off.

  • Melx2be2 uploaded the uncut version of this and alot of other episodes but got banned for copyright violation. Too bad because the deleted scenes added alot. Maybe they can try posting them under another name or on a different site? (yes I know this comment will probably get deleted)

  • I would not let anyone get my kids except ME! I was mad at Mary. Blind or not she could have grabbed her baby! PLUS why did Alice leave the baby to get the other kid? She couldn't handle both kids? In those days of course they didn't have a fire dept., or equipment, etc. Such a sad episode!

  • There's a scene missing where hester sue takes the kettle off the stove and says "woman wheres your mind' then tells adam he;s got a good nose adam notices the smoke smelling stronger so hester sue check on things and FIRE

  • @LauraLovesAlmanzo me too.

  • BEFORE I WATCH THIS VID I WAS LOOKING AT THE COMMENTS AND I WAS LIKE I REALLY DONT WANNA WATCH THIS NOW!!! :(((((((

  • It's always the same. I used to HATE it when we came to a fire, when I was a firefighter, and all these people would stand there laying blame on all the people who were in the fire.

Everyone standing 9 miles away from the flames knows what the hell to do for a situation they're not even in. Right.

  • Look at that precious angel--whoever the baby's portrayer was he's a 30 year old man now--and just think......Mary forgot to pick him up. Adam tells her there's a fire and he and she just both forget the most helpless human being in the house. IT MAKES NO SENSE. I guess Mary would be one of these mothers who "forgets" to drop her baby off at daycare when it's 100 degree outside and she's had a change in routine if she lived today.

IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE FOR THE CHARACTER WHATSOEVER.

  • Wonder what the flashpoint for cloth is? Must be kinda high for a smoldering pipe to take so long to ignite it.

  • My husband used to say I snore, and I just couldn't picture it. I told him that and he said "Please. I had to turn you over so you wouldn't inhale the drapes."

  • at the begining it is "happy music" as i call it.. but this epi is really not one of the "happy" episodes.

  • when did Mary have this baby? what episode was it in when she had this child? I don't remember ever seeing that episode...I remember an episode "the sound of children" when she had her first miscarriage....I'd love to know the title of that episode if U have it where Mary gave birth to this baby, thanks

  • @AmandaRules4ever In "Author! Author!"

  • Mrs. Oleson: Isn't that amazing? He always recognizes my voice, even in a crowd.

Adam: Some voices are easier than others. LMFAO

  • 'If they're as strong as your breath, you ought to be able to chew down a tree Harlan.'

    LMAO

  • Jeez... "Ratings are down, let's go burn a blind school!" Morbid writers...

  • tv show goof at 6:37,,lol..look at the window behind adam as he sits down. Nice and sunny out,

  • @prostockgirl: you can see a dark stroke of nightlight in the middle. The white sides probably needed to look like bright moonlight, a bit too bright perhaps?

  • hey hey atleast mary didnt die right?

  • it is so sad that alice dies

  • @missgraceoc I know! I loved Alice a lot she was great! I like the Garveys

  • I can only imagine the constant nagging Neils goes through.

  • This is the most horrifying, disturbing episode of LHOTP, that I've ever seen. I have an extremely hard time sitting through it. Same with the episode where James and Cassandra watch their parents die in a wagon accident and the episode where Laura's friend drowns in the pond and her mother goes crazy, blaming Laura and then holding her hostage. *shudders*

  • Yeah, some LH episodes shouldn't be rated TV-G! Especially the Sylvia one...

  • Thank you, i've been wanting to see this one.

  • Is it Alive Garvey that gets killed in the fire? I didn't realise. OMG

  • GOD LOVES YOU

  • I think Landon won some Award for his acting in this episode.

  • Emotional2000, Thanks for the vids.

  • Mr. Garlic (2:53) has a point. Garlic has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. I take garlic in capsule form (not stinky) and I hardly ever get sick.

  • this was the hardest episode of LHOTP for me to watch then and now.

  • I totally agree!

  • I can honestly say that this is the one episode that truly horrified me as a child.

  • The wagon accident that killed James' and Cassandra's parents was the one that horrified me (I was 10 when that aired).

  • The only thing I don't understand is why Hester Sue opened the door when so much smoke was pouring from under it.

Even if she didn't know about the 'door test,' common sense would have told her that fire follows most smoke and to keep it closed.

Before opening the door, her good judgment would still be intact.

Oh well. I'm probably thinking too much like a fire fighter.

If you see smoke coming under a door, do nothing. Please. Let the fire department handle it, since that's our job to do so.

  • This part of the episode is heavily edited, is this the DVD-version? 2 scenes are missing that are still shown on German TV:

1.) One of the blind boys sends James to the loo because he is snoring to loud.

2.) Hester Sue does go to the kitchen first and puts the kettle off. When she goes back to Alice and Adam, she congratulates him on his good nose but Adam replies that he is still smelling something. That is why Hester Sue is walking to the basement.

  • yes it seemed badly cut. I assumed there was a scene with the boys sending that little boy the toilet, otherwise, why would they build that part up before. Stupid editing.

  • emotional 2000 I feel sorry for amry frist she loses her eye sight then her baby what do you think ?

  • I've been haunted by the image of the wrapped 'bodies' since I was little, or at least my 'memory' of it. thanks for posting so I can lay to rest such a sad image

  • I can't watch this epi all the way through... Its too heart-breaking.... Anyhoo, you're welcome for the vids! : )

  • @Emotional2000 same here, part one was heart breaking enough

  • @Emotional2000 i can watch it because i didnt get 2 c it all then i was egar 2 find out what happeneds.

  • This episode scared the snot out me when I was little..lol

  • It scares me to this day!

  • @ARTSIEBECCA u mean it scared to shit outa me lol :V (snot?) haha

  • @LauraLovesAlmanzo I'm sure they meant to say snot, since sh*t is a curse.

  • My sister and I always call this episode "Burnt to a Crisp."

This episode was the last straw for me -- I haven't watched it (in total) since it first ran in 1980. I resented how Michael Landon made Mary's character suffer so much after she went blind; no wonder Melissa Anderson left the show. I find it amazing that Mary would "forget" her baby within minutes after playing with him. It reminds me of people who forget their child is in the back seat of their car.

  • I agree. This is a very hard epi to watch for me as well. I couldn't believe all the suffering that the characters endured... It was horrifying to watch. I have only watched this epi twice all the way through.

  • @Emotional2000 I have to agree it Mary Ingalls was asked to endure too much suffering in one short lifetime. Great for dramatic effect but she really deserves to have been given some healthty fat babies and maybe a won the lottery or something...lol

  • @38106chick If you think it's bad watching it, you'd really dislike what we watched.

My former husband, daughter's dad, died in Tower 1 of the World Trade Center.

  • @vickiormindyb

My God, I'm SO sorry. I know the pain of losing a loved one...

  • @38106chick she never FORGOT him? she went to get him and alice told her she would get him and to go on to safety when he and alice were caught by fire. then went into deap denial about her son being dead.

  • @candlelight482 She put the baby back in its bed and remembered him later.

  • @38106chick

    Yeah, this is kinda creepy...

  • @38106chick well one thing in the books mary never had children so maybe he wanted to keep it someone what like the book

  • I suppose they could have wandered off somewhere outside where no one would've seen, instead of going to the basement?

  • I looove Ester Sue, and Albert!!!!!!!!!

  • this is the saddest epi of lhotp i have watched-thanks for posting E2000

  • You're welcome! : )

  • which season is this

  • season 6

  • Hello ozjvgon, I hope that your comment was strictly a joke. Emotional2000 has blessed us with these videos. Please use tact when using comments. Thank you and be blessed. Thank you Emotional2000; it's a nice break after serving in the persian gulf. This is my favorite show of all times.

  • I thank you for your comment 1strongwmn and you're welcome for the LHOP vids... : )

  • ozjvgon, please be careful in what you say regarding race issues... I do not want people to feel offended... Although I know you were only joking, some people may actually take offense to your comment...

    Respectfully,

    Emotional2000

  • After this the Garveys kinda faded out of the show. They should have given the prarie house to Johnathan and Andy in the last season rather than brought in the Carters.

  • I think Merle Olsen starred in another TV show playing a preist after this.

  • WWAHP- yes it was the short lived Father Murphy

  • I guess the series just wanted to start the season fresh by hirinf new actors to feel big shoes. It obviously didn't work, b/c once Ma & Pa left the show just wasn't the same (in my opinion).

  • thanks

  • You're welcome!

  • or some on gets sick

  • this one is so hard to watch its soo sad

  • Agreed!

  • This episode was saddest of all. I couldn't stop crying when alice died. I felt bad for the baby, but we never got to know it that well so i sorta feel bad for alice more, but i do miss the baby. I blame the old man for showing Doc. Baker his teeth and not watching his pipe. lol

  • I always cry at this one..

  • Yes theeunborn, this is a truly sad epi.

  • Geez, There is always major drama on this show and usually involves fire or a baby dying..

  • There are other issues that are tackeled on the show Etheriashroud such as, rape, adoption, theft, heartbrake, being blind, etc.

  • OMG this is my favrite epi!!! SSSOOOO SSAADD

  • Nice to read that its your fav.

  • albert?tsk tsk

  • who started the fire?

  • Albert.

  • It looked like it was actually Clay.

  • Yes, it was Clay. He left the pipe behind.

  • no, it was the other boy!

  • Hey E2000! Just about to settle in and embark upon this epi...this one is major in LHOP legend! Thanks again, this epi is a two-tissue box tearjerker! :D

  • You're welcome hawkwind5! To be honest, I had forgot entirely what this epi was about. lol I didn't realize it was a sad epi until the fire started at the blind school. All of a sudden, I remembered that Mary's baby dies as well as Mrs. Garvey and I was in utter shock! Literally, my mouth was wide up when I saw the fire blaze from the blind school, and that Alice and the baby were trapped inside. Omg! I was totally overwhelmed with saddness during this upload...:(

  • lol liked the start when mr oleson pulled willie from the tre :P tehee
