That isn't the issue at hand. One of the major problems of violent video games is desensitization. It's not that kids will play these games and want to run people over, its that they will get so used to violence and gore that if forced into a situation where violence may be a possible resolution (such as a fight for instance) they will be less predisposed to avoid the violent option.

Don't get me wrong, I play violent games all the time. But be aware that there are legitimate issues.

San Andreas isn't the only GTA game to have violence/sexual content. Plus, there are a lot of other games that are just as bad or worse. You left out war games, the first Condemned (never played but probably has an MA rating.), and a bunch more.

GTA is more controversial than most war games because it's unique.

In call of duty, medal of honor etc. there is an almost equal amount of violence(although you can't dismember people) the protagonist is benevolent. You may be slitting people's throats, but you're saving innocent lives in the process.

Even in doom, which was extremely controversial at the time of it's release, the protagonist was benevolent. You were killing zombies, and saving innocent lives in the process.

GTA, yeah you can run over people and shoot cops, but at the same time, the cops shoot you even if you just stand there doing nothing. Violent games desensitize people to violence, as multiple studies have shown(although there is no correlation between violent games and emulating the acts portrayed in them).

Violent games are fine for adults, who, while desensitized to violence, will control their urges.

Even in games where you aren't necessarily saving innocent lives, you are fighting an equal.

In Mortal Kombat, you aren't saving anyone, but you still aren't killing innocents, you are killing violent peers.

Similarly, in God of war, you are getting revenge for being tricked into killing your family, you aren't killing innocents.

What makes Grand Theft Auto so unique is the fact that while the campaign rarely, if ever calls for you to kill innocents, it's nearly impossible to play through the whole game without accidentally going on the sidewalk or hitting someone accidentally during a fire fight. Additionally, it's hard to play through without killing any cops, who, while are shooting at you, are just trying to do their job.

Sure we had DOOM and Wolf 3D controversy, but it seriously paled in comparison. And which Leisure Suit Larry was that? That's a much later game in the series.
