Holy *bleep*, this is killer! Waaaaaaaay ahead of his time. From what I understand, this came out in '72. Yeah, it sounds like Lenny owes this guy a lot!
This brother must be one of our most underated geniuses, along with prince on guitar...people wake up and smell the funk!!!! Then make sho u wash up though, ya dig???
OK I hope you know how cool it was to be 16 when this album came out. Funk that Rocks was my thang. that's Y i luved the early 70's so much. Music in every genre was so eclectic. This was the SHI-AT!!!!!. I have it all so I'll upload some as well.
i also happened to be a Myspace friend of the guitar player. Ronald 'head' Drayton
Yeah, the 70's was it!! Funkadelic (NOT Parliament, although they were cool too), Mother's Finest, etc. You could turn on the radio and hear James Brown, Coltrane, Hendrix and Mandrill on the same station, no restricted playlists.
@wigginsdesign yo my brother this is the friggin bomb man, god bless u 4 acknowledging what this rock and funk was built on eccentricity and eclecticism, one love bro!!!!!!
@wigginsdesign that would be great.. I haven't heard those two songs in quite some time. Last exit before the toll and The tune from Callicoon and a smoky lit room brings back some sweet memories.
I saw Edwin Birdsong and group called Maxxan which was great at the Warner Theatre in Wash. D.C. It was off the chain. I am trying to find this cd with the cut Rising Sign on it.
Lenny Kravitz???? worse black rocker of all time! Just a pretender, can't compare to birdsong, not even close!!!
Saw Birdsong at the Take It Easy Ranch and Wilmer's Park in Maryland'73/'74. In'73 birdsong, drayton and solomon put the crowd in "shock and awe" the whole time, finish set with Last Station before the Toll,-totally Incredible!! In '74 Edwin with a different band, all came out in 3 piece suits and played songs from his Dance to Survival album,an average Wilmer's Park performance.
@JamyJamMusic Look man' that my opinion. OK. And you have the right to hear my opinion. Now as far as you saying' don't say shit. Man' you don't know me' so have a little respect 4 others opinions' cause I'll say what I like.
You probably spend most you're time cussing out others while hiding behind you're computer screen' don't ya?
@msawbe ahah why are you mad ? English isnt my first thongue so ive learn english only by spending time on internet. So im sorry i thought "dont say shit" was something use a lot in english such as "fuck" and other things. I didnt wanna hurt you baby. I never "cuss out" (thx to learn me that) others youre just too susceptible ;) Kiss you
@JamyJamMusic Its cool man... But don't go bitch on me now! Also if you read some of the comments left by others' I go pretty easy on Kravitz. But at the same time' myself' just like these other folks' can see right though his phony baloney bullshit. If you have any real good taste in music and know anything about its history' you should be able to see though it too...
U got the date wrong. This is from 1974' not 79. I was 14yrs when I sneaked in and I saw his band play the Cream Bo Palace in D.C. I went out and got the 45 of this the next day. Me and some friends learned this song and started playing it in our neighborhood band.
Most underrated funk rock album ever. It don't get no better than this. ronnie drayton on guitar is freaking crankin it. Birdsong is incredible, great vocals. Seen Edwin 2x in the DC areas in the 70's.
Back in the day i had a chance to see Edwin live in Philly. great show great guitarist. Peace

Does anyone have The tune from Callicoon or Last exit before the toll ?

Funny. Lenny Kravitz sounded EXACTLY like that in 1991 on his Mama Said album. Even their singing styles are alike ;)
