This engine needs two distinct sources of compressed air to run. One is over 600 psi and supplies the air-blast injection system until the engine is running.

It was the first running Diesel engine. Rudolf Diesel constructed it together with MAN. Ist is a great mashine, and still running!

No, the first one to be successfully tested was constructed in 1897 and subsequently put into production in 1901.

There is an engine very similar to this one in a pumping station at Aalborg, Denmark. It is a B&W and not a MAN but it is very similar.
