Thanx for the memories of this race.Winning colors was one of the first horses that caught my attention and started my interest in horse racing.still a fond memory along with Sillytwopockets and Zagava at Canterbury Downs in Minnesota in 1988
I think that this fillies best race was the Santa Anita derby. She was at her peak in that race. The time was fantastic and it was the most impressive race i have ever seen a filly run. She still ran dynamite in the derby though. I just wish she saved some of her peak for the triple crown races. Great video, thanks a lot. :)
She was a great filly. Look who she beat. Risen Star, Forty Niner (1 of the scrappiest horses I have seen), Private Terms, Seeking the Gold (who never raced as a 2YO, Proper Reality. All champions in there own right.49er and STG carried on their rivalry when RS never raced again after the Belmont. Saw them live in the Haskell at Monmouth Park. Great race as usual and another great 3YO crop.
She's a CHARACTER! She doesn't want to let anyone get past her!!!
I think running her in the 3 triple crown races took something out of her. They should have only picked 1 or 2. She had worse and worse races after this!
Still I think her fans would have complained loudly if they kept her out of the Preakness...
There's a pensive, or maybe somewhat confounded?.. quality to Johnson's call of the opening first quarter, which turns out to be perfectly put; his timber resonates with each fraction, and so much information all the way around!.. I contend it's maybe the greatest race call ever.. oh, and what she did here?.. and the Santa Anita Derby 2 weeks earlier? (watch that!).. she's one of the greats (an understatement I know).. and Lukas and Gary Stevens too.. etc.. Great moment in history..
I was 8 yrs old in 1988 and I told my dad "Winning Colors is going to win" he asked why, I said "with a name like that, how can you lose?" Beautiful video, horse and race. Very cool!!
She always was and will always be my favorite race horse! RIP Winning Colors! Grey Girls are the BEST and can do ANYTHING, even when they are told it's impossible!
im still in awe! this was an amazing filly with tremendous heart! great video of a great champion......... add this to the santa anita and you get inspired! what horse racing was when i was growing up watching this..... the memories are as if it was yesterday!
Notice the way that Pat Day aboard Forty Niner ..is juuuuust..about to take the lead at the first turn.. but.. he runs out of room.. because she makes the turn first.. and quicker..(that's Gary Stevens in the saddle).. a key moment.. She leads at every point of call.. "Every pole..a winning one.." and fast!.. :23, :46 4/5, and 11 and 2.. fast.. fast.. fast.. A great Derby..
An image of greatness, on the front end, making us all horse racing fans. On this day winning colors made us rise from our seats in awe, wishing her home yelling at the t.v. to Hold em off girl!!! Big red's my favorite but the filly owns the heart.........
Winning Colors proved that girls are just as good as boys, and her her case she proved that she was better then the boys. She will always be remembered.
Say what you want about D Wayne Lucas but he had this filly on the top of her game. He usually does well with his fillies if he does not bury them into the ground by asking too much too soon. Great race mare...love the cheering at the turn as she heads for home. RIP big girl.
Had it not been for Woody Stevens, Winning Colors could have been the first filly in history to arrive at the Belmont with a chance to win the triple crown. Ah, what might have been.
Woody Stevens was so upset when Winning Colors beat Forty Niner that he plainly said she would not win the Preakness. He had Forty Niner's jockey provoke an early speed duel with Winning Colors, knowing that neither would win if they did that. Had that not happened, she probably would have won the Preakness also, given her front-running style. Stevens was a bitter old codger.
I remember this filly quite well, I was rooting for her, midway around the far turn I realized she had a real shot to win. It was so exiting to see that filly hang on to win. Before she suffered a breathing problem(later on in her career)she was one of the best fillies out on the track. Personal Ensign had to WORK HARD to catch her in the 88 B.C. Distaff. She was special!
I hate to correct Dave Johnson, but Gary Steven didn't "send Winning Colors to the front". She hated it when other horses were in front of her. Take a look at my post of the Santa Anita Oaks and see how she reacted when Goodbye Halo put a head in front near the 3/8 pole.
Thanks so much for this, just one example of Winning Colors using her brilliant speed to her advantage. Technically she was gray, not roan (sorry, I train racehorses so I felt compelled to correct the announcer). Nonetheless a fabulous Kentucky Derby!
Glad you enjoyed it. You have a wonderful job in training horses. It must be very rewarding work. I'll do my best to keep the videos coming, I appreciate the comments. Take care.

Doing just like Lukas said she would. The field was huge, she had nothing to prove after that. Out like a lion.

Doesn't she look so happy at the end? If every Thoroughbred enjoyed running that much, I think the track would be a much better place.

Any video on General Assembly? She really did show up the boys didn't she...
shellpen10 4 years ago 2
Hi. I've been on the lookout for General Assembly footage, believe you me.
I especially want to see the '79 Travers where he sets the stakes and track record of 2:00 flat that still stands at Saratoga.
Yep, Winning Colors was a big, strong girl that just loved to romp on the lead. She did well to hold them off.
Take care.
