I remember hearing this live on WBMX or WGCI in the late 70's in Chicago. Louis Johnson is easily the funkiest bass player I have ever heard and that comes from hearing and buying hundreds of funk LP's from back in the day.
this little lick on the bass by louis johnson, has to be on of the funkiest grooves on the bass ever!! take lessons and see if you can even keep track in your heads how many times he hits the strings in this. awesome possum 69!!!
Oh My Goddess!!! This is indeed what "floetry" is all about, I grew up listening to these guys, and was madd about it then. And will always admire the funk-n-talent that clearly paved the way for music today. Absolutely Fabulous!!!
Sounds like another incredible performance to me!!!!!!I guess I don't have the time to pick out the piano, drums, chimes etc to try and determine the maker, but that's cool that you do.
I have loved this from the start and will continue to do so. Still, a lot of times hammering and plucking sounds spectacular, but sometimes it's also being used to cover up the lack of technique. If you listen to Jaco Pastorius, he shows the bass sounds contains so much more.
As far as technique you should listen to Louis play bass on "Smilin' on ya" / "Light up the Night" album or "Street Walk" / "Blam album." On "Love is" / "Right on Time" album He plays bass, lead, & 6 & 12 string acoustic. Quincy Jones would not have utilized his talents on so many projects if his technique were lacking in any way. Michael McDonald seemed to like his technique for his rendition of "I keep forgettin'"
That's an odd statement since slap/pop is a technique unto itself. As amazing as Jaco was, he virtually never slapped, so you're kind of comparing apples and oranges.
I'd agree that Louis' performance here is a bit rough around the edges, but the guy has proven many times over what an amazing player he is.
Thanks for the live recording.

Lewes Johnson's performance is very powerful.
It is a performance different from Larry Graham.
I feel wonderful as the pioneer of this performance method also by both.

Leo Fender actually took the guts out of Louis' Stingray, and beefed it up to make his sound and thumpability more present...
