I two questions. What is the purpose of the wood ash in the center? And...What is the purpose of the purpose of the dried straw/plant matter used as the base layer before placing the dirt and compost? Thanks.
@tocof1 Hi, the wood ash is to add alkaline if local soils are acidic (instead of using lime). The plant matter traps moisture in the soil for the dry season. It also rots down and turns into compost over time.
