You wonder why Muslims do. Each religion has its manifestations. Muslims do it this way the pain of Imam Hussein (as) had also experienced but many times worse. With his life he saved Islam. Christians crucify themselves in the same way as what happened with Jesus. In Hinduism they set themselves with nails and needles. Every religion has something so this is not strange.

Brother, Shia's have Salat, Zakat, Tawheed, hajj, and we fast. We pray the exact same way and we have the same prohibition. We don't worship Imam Hussein nor Ali, we just commemorate his and the 72 companions who were butchered in Karbala. How many Shia's do you see with a picture of Ali or Hussein and kissing them. Furthermore my brother, what does Muslim mean? It means one who surrenders to the will of God, to submit. So, please understand one's religion before criticizing it.
