@wataday2day - It's a great sounding amp, but it does not like to be pushed too hard. It will hang with a drummer, but... it depends on how loud the band is.
I've just come out of two consecutive exams, so forgive me for being a bit dim, but when you said 'the entire package is a very managable 33 pounds', being English, I thought you were on about £s. :(
Would it be possibly to quote you on this regardless - it might just work for one of those beat-any-price deals?
Brilliant review. I very much want one. Evidently. :)
hey ed i was just looking for an amp to play it on the street without any electric power, i mean with a batterie placed in, do u know if this amp can be addapted or wich amplifier can u recomend me to use it on the street, and in open places without loosing that punchy soound
The compressor can be set for subtle to very active operation. I suppose if you wanted to really squash your tone, you could use it to even out your bass tone. You lose a lot of volume though.
I don't know how many musicians can be true audiophiles after years of gigging - my hearing is shot - so the little intricacies some of the higher dollar amps offer are somewhat lost on me unless at higher volumes. I have the old style SWR Workingman 12 that serves me well when playing bass - I removed the hissing LeSon horn to clean it up and replaced the Celestion speaker with an EV EVM 12-L for more response- its a whole different amp. It has the DI/tuner out jacks as well as effects loop.
What kind of Lakland is that? American made? I looked on MusiciansFriend, and the closest I can see to that is the 55-02. I'm looking at the Deluxe 44-02 bass. I really like the natural, crisp tone you're getting there at the beginning. Can you recommend something from Lakland? I'd just like an active 4 string bass and you rave about your Laklands, so wanted to get your opinion on that.
i wanted a good sounding, small and light amp for fretless and upright.this little "wonderbox" is amazing! it may be not loud enough for a deathmetal gig, but for me it is all what i need.
perfect and clear sound, loud enough for gigs on smaller stages and it is a "flyweight" compared to my old marshall-jcm800 bassstack and its cabinets.
What kind of excursion do those 5" drivers have ? I don't see how such tiny drivers could have much output even if you have a bunch of them. You can get decent cone area, but a 5" driver usually has much less excursion than a 10" or 15".
I don;t have any way to measure excursion, but you could pose that question on Talkbass and get a few weeks worth of answers on it! This particular amp is not about the volume obviously, it's about tone and lightweight. It's a great amp as long as you use it how it was intended, don't take it to your AC/DC tribute gig!
$1200 practice amp. If you're playing the lounge at the airport Hilton then this is the amp for you. Otherwise get a Mesa walkabout 1x15 for about the same money.
meh. phil jones stuff is practically a whole 'nother class of amp. mesa walkabouts are great, love em, but it still sounds like the rig is covered with four big old quilts compared to pjb gear, no matter what the size and wattage.
Yeah, but truthfully these videos take so much work to produce - two days essentially. That's a lot of hours. I don't have the time to do these videos just for fun. I keep saying I'm going to do this or that, but when it comes down to it... I need a deadline and an editor waiting for the video to actually get me off my butt and produce!
hey Ed! can you somehow do a demo of schecter stiletto studio? im really considering of buying the thing..but i have no place to try it out. you make hell of a reviews Ed!
Well, thanks. Unfortunately, I don't get to pick out the stuff I review. Guitar World picks it for me, so unless they come up with one... I can't help you out.
I own a six string Stiletto Studio, and they're decent starting basses if you want to try an active bass, but I hate the stock pickups. If you get one, you may end up shelling out about $150-$200 more to get new pickups.
If you don't mind the pickups, the playability is pretty good for the price. I suggest you try one out if you can.
Hey man, really nice unbiased demonstration of the amp.
Despite the comment that I just typed - how do you rate the amp? Would you recommend checking one out? Is it worth the cash (gonna be about a thousand pounds when its released in the UK).
Well, I think it's a great tone rig. It can handle moderate volume situations well, but it is not a hard rockin' kind of amp. It has a natural, well balanced sound with pleasant high end, and good bottom. It's ideal for acoustic situations, recording, and use in small rooms. But don't expect it to be a high volume-kick ass kind of rig.
The Upright sound realy good through that amp, but just to see how good the amp realy is, can you put a video \ recording of the upright bass without an amp (acousticly?
hello there
i'm looking for an amp for my upright that i could use on small electric gigs.
small gigs but still electric, meaning a drummer playing an after beat on a snare drum! I've been said this is a really good amp with no power!!!!
can you tell me about that?
thanks

Yes, it's a 55-02. The 44-02 is the 4 string version, though mine is not the Deluxe model. Yes, I rave about them because they rock!

i have a couple of questions
have u played the suitcase (4 5" speakers)
do u prefer this amp or the suitcase?
and is this loud enough to play at a gig?
palynchuk93 3 years ago
Two quick questions,
1 . Solid State, tube, or Hybrid?
2 . whats the wattage on it?
thanks!
basssssss14 3 years ago
Solid state, class A/B power amp. 150 watts.
BassGuitarMag 3 years ago
uh, 250 on this model. 150 on the 4-speaker older, smaller brother to this amp.
