it does suck to see an iconic landmark go. but lets be honest, i doubt any one would pay to stay there today with places like city center next door. Just like why would anyone want to stay at the nasty imperial palace other then it's one the least inexpensive places to stay on the strip. And by cutting prices it makes it even harder to stay open hence the Sahara closing.
Out with the old and in with the new I guess. So much history just tossed out. All these wonderful old places destroyed, but it seems like they could have kept some of the history like the Dunes sign at least.. And the Sands and Aladdin. Vegas is just another tourist spot now. All the names that played this place back in the 50's, 60's, 70's-will they be forgotten too? I saw the strip once when I was 17 back in 74. Thought it was magical.
@char4him99 I was just in Vegas to get married and there was an article in a local rag about saving some old signage. There is a museum that is funded by donations and this sign was looked at for saving but it was massive costs. Its not like you run out there with a handful of day laborers and take it down. The sign was 180 feet tall. The museum didnt have the money, the city wouldnt fund salvage etc... Steve Wynn had it destroyed. The estimated cost to salvage it was 2 million. sad but real.
Seems to me someone would have paid very good money for the Dunes sign. Destroying it is just glorifying in vandalism. It's not like you have much heritage over in the U.S. You never will if you keep this up.
Aghhh!!!!!!! Not the dunes sign!!!! ;( it was the mos beautiful sign on the strip...f-ing Steve wynn take all the awesome hotel o the ground and putting up the dull overpriced hotels..
I was TRYING to get to this event....ehh! Still to this day, this is the best implosion of all LV implosions (so far). *Stardust comes in second place.
No idea what's next for the strip, but I would say go big. Bring down the Tropicana! Make it a "show" like the above vid by aiming the intense Luxor spotlight with a mirror pre-pyro.. then blow it to he!! :)
BUT, I do miss the Old Vegas, open space, I admit..
Just to add a little trivia, the voices you hear on the speakers before the implosion (3:35 - 3:50) are the original British ship crew from the Treasure Island show. The Treasure Island opened the same day the Dunes was imploded, so they decided to fire a "cannonball" from the TI to the Dunes to start the implosion. An awesome effect, I remember it well. But, the best implosion out here in Vegas had to be the Hacienda. Very cool how they went floor by floor.
Vegas is a mere ghost of it's old days. Fricken kids everywhere and Disneyland attractions all over the place. Yuck! My late father Bill Rogers was the arranger and concuctor of the Frank Sinatra Orchestra and the Frank Sinatra Jr. Orchestra. He also did the Jerry Lewis Telethon arrangements for 20 years. He wrote for scores of people in Vegas including the Rat Pack guys and was a monster in his field. R.I.P. Dad. :) Bring back the MOB days when a musician could at least make a living there.
I thank whoever filmed this. I was on the back side of the building, that night, where all the fireworks were raining down on us. It was an amazing view of the demolition. I could not hear Steve Wynn as well as this group. I remember us trying to decide where the best view would be from and deciding to go to the backside because of traffic. It was a good choice.
Thanks for this one..was this filmed from The Flamingo? Sad to see all the old Strip become these Super-Resorts..ah well. Still, I would have killed to see this implosion. Think it's the best one they have had to date (Loved how Wynn's Treasure Island staged the attack from the Pirate Ship on the Dunes. Damn original)
A.C. on my end of the USA is having a comeback..thank God. Still, nothing compares to Sin City!
I've got the LIVE coverage of this implosion from KLAS-TV 8 in Vegas, back in the days when I lived out there. If I had the equipment, I'd post it on this site for all of you folks to enjoy. And how much younger Gary Waddell & Paula Frances looked on that cool, October night!
What do you have it on? VHS? I live in Vegas, and I have the equipment to convert it over to a digital file. Let me know if you want me to do it for you! Would love to see it.
It looked like someone died in the building. Oh, my goodness! And they did the implosion to set The Dunes on fire.

@scrapplecheesesteak No. The Landmark is because of the movie Mars Attacks.
