simply they rock our asses....rock in its purest expression....i loved their musical frenesy and tightness as human beings but now they are no more the brothers i knew, so it's sad enough
Love so much of GFR during my teenage days and still do to date. But growing up has made me lost track. Is Mark and the rest still around ? Its sad they mismanaged their fortune and ran foul with the taxman. I'll always remember them !
Musically, and on stage, they were one of the most honest hard rock bands ever and brought a level of artistry that put paid to the notion that technique was king. It was emotion and honesty and power that I was looking for at 15.
"... Then the IRIS comes after you... When will people leave you alone ! "
Who think's they can spend a 100 million dollars on planes, trains, and automobiles and not have to pay tax on any of it...
I don't like paying tax cause I love my own money, but I also love being able to live in a sweet country that would allow me to make 100's of millions of dollars...
Not trying to be negative, just found it interesting...
Grand Funk Railroad ushered in the 1970's with change & until this day are misunderstood for it.
GFRxR brought the 3 man power band to the masses & have been condemned for it ever since.
The critics panned this band from the start for everything from their look (Farner's hair) to calling their instruments junk (Farner's $200 Messenger Guitar.)
@PackedFunk Ten consecutive platinum albums is impressive! I don't care who u are! Them being from my home state (i'm from Detroit), you knew they had to be something special. I never heard of them until i saw their Behind the Music special in '99. But a couple of songs from them that i like are "Locomotion" and "Some Kind of Wonderful."
@PackedFunk First of all, great job at posting this! The only thing i wished u could've did was when they go to commercial break or when they're about to start the actual documentary, then u hear the music. I wished u could've left all of that in there because i really dig the original Behind the Music beats! Other than that, nice job!
@PackedFunk "GFRxR brought the 3 man power band to the masses . . . " Uh, no, they didn't. Not quite. They came in the wake of those who did bring the power trio to the masses: Cream, the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Reference Don Brewer himself at 7:15 . . .
This is what many people think Rock & Roll is all about. GFRxR was simple and they were crude and they rocked with a vengeance without pretense or apology. Their live show was 100% energy. It was raw and it was real. For all us who remember, nothing can replace it.
People are still in awe of this great but misunderstood American Band!
@PackedFunk I loved the music of Grand Funk from the beginning and still do,all you say is so true everyone were mesmerized by the band and their music! Thanx 4 posting this
Some of those mullets need to come with a warning "What you are about to see is not recommended if you were not alive or old enough in the 80's to properly understand that mullets were an anomoly that were embraced at the time but horrify us all today".
Man, I love Mark Farner. He overcame a lot and enjoyed a lot. He found Christ and committed his life to living out his faith. In the period we are in now, that takes guts!
His singing and showmanship and songwriting prowess is legendary for a reason!
Too bad Mr Terry Knight as an asshole manager..........He would have made more fame and money. Just like George Martin was to the Beatles. Too bad Mr Terry Greed!!
During 1970-1972, Grand Funk Railroad was the greatest band on the planet, hands down!! They turned commercial with We're An American Band, and it was an awful transformation for us fans that were loyal to them from the start. As evil and dirty as Terry Knight was, he was truly the best thing that ever happened to GFR. They made a HUGE mistake by firing him! They could have been the
greatest band ever had they stuck with their 3 piece power rock formula!!
Great band ,...probably the best behind the music episode. Too bad Vh1 only puts out Shit groups now on BTM. Who gives a shit about Pink and 50cent, and fuck the hall of fame .The dumb bitch madonna ruined that too.!

I agree they did it willfully, but Knight took advantage of that since he was a talentless toad and royaly screwed them. Although I agree he should get paid for his services, he shouldn't have taken all that he did. I really hope he enjoys it where he is now.
grand funk is too good for the rock and roll hall of shit... who cares. i got the records and will NEVER step foot in that place. i will still listen to grand funk though...
i have to respectfully disagree. They signed the contract or their own free will. They were so immature that they only had to wait three months and they would be out of it. Knight did want to make alot but they were desperate to make it at any cost. Anyway Terry was murdered, so its a moot point
The fact that Grand Funk Railroad has not already been inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame is proof that the RRHOF is worthelss garbage. Wenner is a weiner. Grand Funk lives on.
They're not a favorite of the insiders so they don't get to ride the nostalgia train like Cream and Zeppelin.
For a solid 5 years these guys churned out some serious and innovative music.
It's a shame I agree but what can you do?
Just look at it this way : There's only so many re-releases of Led Zeppelin these ass holes will be able to milk the public for ..it's only a matter of time before they dip into the GFRR coffers
So tired fot the Elitest R&R H.O. LAME arbitrarily inducting innapropriate acts before derving members. Hello! THE VOTING SHOULD BE DONE BY THE MUSIC BUYERS, alike the Baseball All Star Game!
As an artist and creator that saw all levels of the playing field, Mark Farner's musical diversity is a matter of public record. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home" as one of the top ten classic songs of all time. Way to go Mark!!! Further proof this great American Band can not be ignored any longer!!!
Great to see this again; these guys are responsible for in my view one of the two greatest songs ever: Bad Time!!! The other, in case anybody cares, is McCartney`s My Love.
Just a random thought: did any of you out in youtubeville know that Terry Knight was murdered (stabbed) in his apartment in Texas a few years ago where is lived with his daughter. It was the daughter's boyfriend who stabbed him. Apparently not bursting at the seams with cash. Don't wish that on anyone. But after the contractual issues with the band it's a bit of justice.
I have Bloodrock's 1, 2, 3, U.S.A. And Live... The Whole Albums. And Currently I'm Uploading GFR's Whole Album Library. Check It Out. PLEASE This Isn't meant to be Spam, Just Check it out if You Want To. Thanks
I love the Funk....and, despite being in England where they never took off, own all their records....but I wouldn't call them heavy at all....they're tuneful straight rock music. they're not in the same camp as Sabbath, Priest, AC/Dc etc surely???
We had a coupla little bands over here that could sell out medium size arenas; The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and ,er, Led Zeppelin. I still like the 'Funk - especially their first 3 LPs.
This is how it was. The New York Daily News Nationwide Readers' Poll for 1971. Tens of thousands of votes were cast from every state in the nation. When the final score was tallied, Grand Funk Railroad had garnered a whopping 75% of the total vote as "Best Rock Group In The U.S." Left to split up the remaining 25% were: 2. Creedence Clearwater, 3. Jackson Five, 4. Led Zeppelin, 5. Three Dog Night, 6. The Who, 7. Sly, 8. Santana, 9. Chicago, and 10. Ten Years After!
I´ve bought the record "CAUGHT IN THE ACT" once again and listened to it and now I know again why they were so popular to their fans- its really an electrifying and funky hard working ROCK`N ROLL SOUL BAND -YEAH! I love them since my youth-despite of the critics in the magazines-bu forget them-keep on rocking!
Yes..These guys WERE the hardest working rock and roll band ever! And they STILL are not recognized by the R and R Hall of Fame. That's ok. We fans KNOW better!!
COME ON PEOPLE LETS GET GRAND FUNK RAILROAD INTO THE ROCK-N-ROLL HALL OF FAME---WE BABY BOOMERS GREW UP WITH THIS BAND I HAD CHANCE TO MEET MARK IN MISSOURI IN 2002 One of the hardest rocking bands of that time
screw the R&R HOF, it doesnt mean anything, I mean they put Madonna in there. I would rather not see these legends in the company of that garage!! P.S. Im gonna see Mark Farner for the first time tommorrow in my hometown, so excited!! More people in my generation should know about this band!!
The first time I saw Grand Funk Railroad was I think in 1968 when I was still in high school. I saw Grand Funk at the NY Fillmore East, it was Fat Matress, Grand Funk Railroad and Jethro Tull in this order. Grand Funk 1st gig in nyc and they blew everybody away that night at first there were problems with the audio and Mark got piss't off but when it all came togther they were fantastik.
It's always great seeing a band live for the first time before they make it big commercially.
GFRxR was a real people's band. Rejected by critics, GFRxR still became the first band to earn 10 consecutive platinum albums. They broke The Beatles ticket sales record at New York's Shea Stadium in '71, a record that has stood an astounding 37 years. Despite all this sucess, they remain ignored by The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Please sign the petition above to induct The Great Mark Farner & GFRxR into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame now!
Funny, I've been reading Eric Clapton's biography lately, and Clapton said he had developed the concept of the "power trio" from seeing the amount of sound Buddy Guy was able to get with a three-piece. He said Cream was a failure because he could never make a trio sound like there was more than three people.
Along came bands like the James Gang and Grand Funk Railroad, and somehow--they've been described of doing just what the "great" Eric Clapton had said he had failed at with Cream!
What comes to mind with GFRxR is first of all Farner's voice (best front-man ever). The tone was right with that Messenger. Crunching Bass the way Mel played it with a pick. Is there a better drummer than Brewer? No! ENDLESS ENERGY with a passion toward what you believe. Yes, & even Terry Knight's management, all came together at the right time. There is no substitute for hard work. Just some thoughts as I take a break from building a bike.

Below, my brother PackedFunk states the 5 biggest reasons that Grand Funk Railroad should be inducted IMMEDIATELY in the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame. I mean....what more does Jann Wenner want? We're asking all who visit this great channel to PLEASE join The FUNK Movement by first signing the petition at the description of this video....click on the blue 'more' and you're there. It takes a couple seconds to do. Thanks!
1. Sell out Shea Stadium twice in three nights, break The Beatles ticket sales record & set a record that has stood for 37 years.
2. Your first three albums went Gold in less than three months. Another first.
3. Become the first band to sell ten consecutive Platinum albums. Another first.
4. Have the number one song in America & number one album, already certified Gold before album has been oficially released due to pre-sales orders (American Band). Another first.
5. Being totally ignored by The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame as though you never existed. Another first that can no longer be ignored, therefore the petition in this video's description!
GFRxR never fit the industries perception of what a great Rock & Roll Band should be. Even though rejected by critics, The People loved this band. In the end, that is all that matters.
Packed, is it true that in 1970 ALONE, GFRxR was awarded 5 gold records? If so, this is an amazing Rock-n-Roll feat! Seems that Mark and the boys have broken all KINDS of records yet they are STILL denied the honor of rightfully being in the R&R Hall of Fame. What gives?....besides Jann Wenners decency.
We are well over 800,000 views of our GFRxR videos now! This has become unreal in popularity. The Funk Movement is on!!! Join us! Sign our petition in this video's full description!!!
THANK YOU PACKEDFUNK. My brother sent the You Tube video to me. We saw them at the stadium way back when. All young rockers should view this video to see what REAL ROCK IS. I WANT A REUNION!
This band rocked harder than any band in history! Prove me wrong, I dare you! Grand Funk Railroad Live was The Ultimate, bar NONE!!! The Establishment hated this band & thanks to Jann Wenner of Rolling Stone, Mark, Don, & Mel still pay the price for not fitting "The Preconceived Image" of what a Rock Band should be. The People Should Speak!!! Support our petition in video's description.
all the best band cant go to the rock & roll hall of fame. band like little feat and grand funk railroad and dr hook jimmy buffett the rock & roll hall suck
GFRxR became the number one act in the world at this time. Both in ticket sales & album sales. Zep could not handle the fact that they could not follow GFRxR & "Pulled The Plug" on them. Cowardly act. At least go down swinging.
I'm from the Netherlands and over here GFR has always been underrated too by the Dutch. But NOT in my community! Grand Funk Railroad has always been HOT in the Maluku community!
GFRxR was generous enough to leave the remaining 25% of the "scraps" for the other top 9 bands to fight over. I think it's funny that The Might Zep was out-voted by Jackson 5. Hahahaha! What they get for pulling power plug on GFRxR in Detroit! This is an incredable stat that shows the dominance of GFRxR in '71. No wonder there were riots by fans not getting a ticket.
Did you guys see that crowd at 0:50? Looked like the Shea Stadium show. Now THAT, my friends, is the power of music.

Yes, 100% sure GFRxR was first American Band of any genre to earn 10 consecutive platinum albums.
This is even a question in the trivia pursute game. I've seen it & I've talked to Mark Farner personally about this achievement.
In fact, before it was all said & done, they actually earned 12 consecutive platinum albums.

Grand Funk Railroad is just one of the best bands North American.
A pity that the rock'n roll of today is made of so many shits.

Terry Knight = thief
gullwing14 2 years ago
i have to respectfully disagree.

ConspiracyGuy1 2 years ago
They're not a favorite of the insiders so they don't get to ride the nostalgia train like Cream and Zeppelin.
For a solid 5 years these guys churned out some serious and innovative music.
It's a shame I agree but what can you do?
Just look at it this way : There's only so many re-releases of Led Zeppelin these ass holes will be able to milk the public for ..it's only a matter of time before they dip into the GFRR coffers

No didn't know that. Haven't really even thought about Terry Knight lately. Yeah its weird how things happen, that's to bad.

Along came bands like the James Gang and Grand Funk Railroad, and somehow--they've been described of doing just what the "great" Eric Clapton had said he had failed at with Cream!
notfragile33 3 years ago 2
What comes to mind with GFRxR is first of all Farner's voice (best front-man ever). The tone was right with that Messenger. Crunching Bass the way Mel played it with a pick. Is there a better drummer than Brewer? No! ENDLESS ENERGY with a passion toward what you believe. Yes, & even Terry Knight's management, all came together at the right time. There is no substitute for hard work. Just some thoughts as I take a break from building a bike.

The New York Daily News' Nationwide Readers' Poll for 1971.
Tens of thousands of votes were cast from every state in the nation. Whe the final score was tallied, Grand Funk Railroad had garnered a whopping 75% of the total vote as "Best Rock Group In The U.S." Left to split up the remaining 25% were: 2 Creedence Clearwater, 3. Jackson Five, 4. Led Zeppelin, 5. Three Dog Night, 6. The Who, 7. Sly, 8. Santana, 9.Chicago, and 10.Ten Years After!

Thanks!
fattdaddy3755 3 years ago 2
PackedFunk 4 years ago

GFRxR became the number one act in the world at this time. Both in ticket sales & album sales. Zep could not handle the fact that they could not follow GFRxR & "Pulled The Plug" on them. Cowardly act. At least go down swinging.
