@kellokid If you're from NJ, you should check out some great shows we're doing in Woodbridge. see hoppersmusic "Music On Main Street" for details. Past shows David Bromberg, Marshall Crenshaw, Roger McGuinn, Raul Malo, Les Dudek.....
@kellokid thank you for requesting this song...love this version even more than the studio recording. Loved this song from the first time I heard it....thanks again.
What an honor to hear Lovett play this song with Guy Clark sitting beside him at the Edmonton Folk Festival. A beautiful song and one of my favorites of all time.
I heard this song for the first time some 20 years ago...loved it at first listen. It wasn't until I got a computer of my own last year that I heard it again. That room is kind of etched in my mind's eye. I'm glad to see others have been listening to it as well. Seems I can't type and listen (who knew)....so I'll just replay.
It's such an irony that this might be my favorite Lyle Lovett song. I think his greatest strength is writing, and this is an album of songs written by others. However, this song was actually never recorded prior to this, and Lyle made it his own as a result. This album is so great because Lyle thinks so highly of the people who wrote these songs; they were big influences on him. He treats the songs like they're gold.
I grew up listening to this song through my father, whether it was him putting this song on while working out in the yard or during dinner or just relaxing. As a child I didn't give this song much thought, it was background music and above my awareness at the time. Now that I'm older and listening to it over again, I am overcome with the realization that perhaps my father had a plan, for my brother and I, to show us great music that would come back to us when we needed it the most. Love you Dad
@BigKazzy I'm compiling a list of "your father's songs" ....criteria: old songs that you've known the words to since you were a kid. Mine? Istanbu (the original 1953 Four Lads) and Poco Loco in the Coco. both are on Youtube...check them out.
Just another reason to love Lyle, scary to think this song would have been lost to the world if not for his friendship with Guy Clark. It scary to think how many gems perfectionist like Guy might have tossed because they didn't recognize when they reached perfection.
This was the first song Guy Clark ever wrote. He never really liked it -- says it was just average stuff. He really likes Lyle's rendition though so he figures there is no need to record it. I think it is profoundly moving and one of the best songs Guy has written.

Saw this song live for the first time about 4 years ago. Definitely one of the greatest compositions ever written.

My wife's too! My favorite of his covers (Guy Clark wrote this one) is Flying Shoes written by Townes Van Zandt. Thanks for the comment!
