Kubelik/Janacek Sinfonietta 4th and 5th movements

The French horns are too muted. They should blare triumphantly.

The violin trills at the end are too lost in the tutti. Aber schade.

The last movement should thrill and send shivers along one's spine.

This interpretation seems too timid, almost perfunctory.

I wanted it to knock off my socks as well as my shoes.

This is great music making and great conducting. I met Maestro Kubelik nearly 30 years ago in Chicago after a Bruckner 8 he conducted there. Most major conductors at that time, when I told them I was a conducting a student treated me like a pest. Not him. He embraced me and let the blue-haired Chicago monied people wait.

@rjdebbaut Glad you had that support eventually. I went to see Sir Georg Solti after a performance when I worked at Decca. I was a junior in the royalties department. He put his arm round my shoulder and said with a broad grin, "Very important man, you are". Something similar happened with Hans Werner Henze, but that's another story.

Years later I conducted concerts in the Dvorak Hall in Prague. There is a bust of him on the left hand side as one enters the stage. I kissed that bust on the way in and I look forward to kissing it again. Thank you, Maestro, for Janacek and for your kindness.
