I am from US. Can somebody please inform me, where are tombaks primarily played, vs the darbukas (doumbeks) I see more often. This is such a great sounding drum, I am surprised I haven't seen it before now. Somebody with knowledge, please tell me a little about the tombak. Thank you.
@rmcdaniel423 Tombak (also called Zarb) is primarily an Iranian/Persian instrument, whereas darabukas/derbekkis are Arabic, Turkish & Greek (called doumbeleki by Greeks).
@rmcdaniel423 Also, as you may have noticed, it has a very involved & deep playing technique! That's one reason you may have seen it less; it takes years of practice to get beyond "beginner" level.
@rmcdaniel423 The tombaks you find in england and usa are crappy and expensive. The good quality (but still pretty expensive) ones are in Iran and Azarbaijan. The best ones in the world are from the city of Esfehan, Tehran and Shiraz ( citites in iran)
This show was genuinely captivating! It continues to be a triumph in reviving of a traditional Tombak. Master P. Akhavass is a breath of fresh air in Persian Classical Music. Although very young, he is a true master of the art. Pezhham is a prodigy of the new musical wave.
This show deserved much more admiration by applause, but the audience did not wish to risk missing even a single beat. Wonderful!
