  • It's true that Mahler's 8th is by far the best, but Solti's version wasn't very good.

  • Solti's contribution to his Mahler 8 recording is awful, he ruins Mahler's hard work.

The only thing good about that recording are the wonderful singers.

  • Solti's wonderful mittel Europa voice sounds like an urbane Bond villain! Can't agree with his sentiments about the 8th - to me it always sounds like a huge showy commission piece specially created for an evening of bourgeois entertainment at the Hollywood bowl. But I do think Solti and the CSO made the definitive recordings of the 7th and 9th. I had the great pleasure of seeing him conduct the 9th at the Sydney Opera House in 1988. It sounded even better than the recorded version. A true god o

  • Oh gosh, the talkative conductor : ((((

    yukk

  • I am not a fan of Solti's Mahler, but his Ring Cycle is the standard against which all others will be compared for many years to come.

  • Solti is not the greatest Mahler conductor, but his 8th is splendid. I have most of Solti's Mahler on C.D. and they are not the finest apart from the 1st. But Solti as a conductor of opera (Wagner's Ring, and Mozart) he is brilliant. This is why his version of the 8th is unsurpassed, the culmination of voice and orchestra suits Solti's style better than orchestra alone. He uses his experience of opera conducting style in this one symphony to great effect. God bless you Sir Georg and Gus.

  • @simeyD I totally agree!

  • @simeyD What about his Mahler 5 with Chicago? Its amazing!

  • Solti RULES!!!
