This brings back memories of my father. He would sing this to help me sleep he would play a guittar like yours soft and slow. Like he would always be there. He passed away 5 years back. Thank you for keeping his memory alive in my heart. :'( Love you daddy
I heard Dylan wrote this on a talk show or something, he just wrote it for entertainment purposes of the show, and then olds crow covered it. Though I don't know how much truth rings in that?
Dylan wrote the tune and chorus, but never finished the song. It was on a bootleg that circulated pretty widely, and Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show wrote the lyrics and arranged it. They snag it for several years before they recorded it, and got Dylan's permission and share copyright with him.
Having trawled the internet looking for versions of this song since watching the official Old Crow vid (which is fantastic btw), I am delighted to have found this. To my mind, it;s the way Dylan would have heard it - no big production, just great guitar, great voice and loads of heart!
Anybody who disliked your video has never really experienced true musicianship. You, Against Me, Mumford and Sons, and Old Crow all do this song justice. Protest songs and folks songs keep American Music alive. Keep playin' man. I love it.
Hey everyone, I recently posted a video of a friend of mine that passed away in a motorcycle accident recently, Hes shreds on the electric guitar while my other friend is playing the chords to wagon wheel on acoustic guitar behind it, the kid playing electric was truly blessed when he plays the guitar its incredible it blows my mind, you guys should check him out just search "wagon wheel cover electric/acoustic guitar" i promise you guys wont be sorry!!, thanks everyone i appreciate it! :)
My cousin Timothy Reck died April 25, 2011. He was an amazing musician and like a brother to me. This was a song that we would always ask him to play for us. His version was a lot like yours and listening to it brought back some wonderful memories of Timmy.
@revolutionow1 I think that neither Bob or OCMS should get most of the credit. Bob wrote the chorus that everyone remembers and sings along to but OCMS put the story, and to me, the life into the song and made it what it is. Its a great song and you shouldnt argue over who gets most of the credit. Thats not what musics about.
@Ecstaticalways I think Dylan started this song and never finished it. It remained unfinished for years. Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show wrote verses for the song around Dylan's original chorus
Another listen was in orrder. Great jobm nicely understated, its nice that you have the 'story' of tyhe song as well, its a very cool litle story about a cool little tune. Listrn to Matt Andersens(spelling) version, so awesome.
I can't believe y'all are really arguing about who should be credited and talking down on dylan you guys are fucking stupid its obviously Dylan's song you can hear that even the verses are written in a way that Dylan would have so it's honoring him as a musician. It's called a tribute song idiots. Good cover!
Nice performance. Your recorded acoustic guitar sound is really above average for youtube stuff, to my ear. Great song, nice version! Bonus Points - You have caused a low grade s**t storm about the publishing rights, which I don't understand but find strangely amusing. AND on top of all of that, our troops (or at least a troop) dig it, which is top shelf!
I like your cover. It reminds me of my army buddy. He sang this song for us in Kuwait while we waited to go to Iraq. He played on a guitar just like yours. Maybe it's the beer talking, but I heard a little bit of him in you tonight. I ain't a praying man, but he's still over there while I'm back in America. Pray for him, if you find the time.
@FallaciousGee I pray he comes home safely. And i thank you, him, and every one of our soldiers for doing something many of us (including me) don't have the courage to do. I pray all of you come home safely.
the folk tradition in littered with ripped off melodies and lyrics...I guess the reason why woody guthrie was so into folk is that it was a very "commun"ist in that everything, be it melodies or lyrics or even modes of singing. Real folk artists would want us to stop arguing about who takes credit for the songwriting and enjoy the music.I highly doubt anyone remembers who wrote house of the rising sun but it has become so universal that being nobody's song it becomes everyones song.IE folk music
I wouldn't call "Wagon Wheel" a collaboration between Dylan and Old Crow...the melody and vocal inflection is a complete rip. The guy just put in his own words at the verse part, which is by far the easiest part of writing a song. The song is a hit because of its melody and chorus lines, which came 100% from Bob Dylan.
Not that big a deal because Dylan is credited, but if Old Crow had the conceit to even call the song a "collaboration" they would be dishonest people.
@MisterAtoms No matter how hard you try to make OCMS seem like thieves, the fact of the matter is that this song, by definition, is a collaboration. Now, while Dylan did all the hard work coming up with the INCREDIBLY unique and intricate chord progression of G, D, Em, and C, you're still a fool to insinuate that this song isn't a collaboration simply because you consider OCMS's contribution to have been easy. I would be curious to know how you define the word collaboration...
ok, this is for prestonwolf, bob dylan, speaking as I am for him because I know his music so extensively, scrapped this song. Yeah, he came up with the chords, but the changes were so similar to the instrumental Pat Garrett and billie hte kid song, knocking on heaven's door, and as a songwriter, he scrapped that chorus for knocking on heaven's door, not to mention that it still is a brilliant song, secor, knowing that music is flexible, rocked it with rock me mama.
Well done. If Dylan HAD recorded this, I think you have it to a T. My favourite cover of this song is by Matt Andersen. Nice job. If Dylan had recorded this tune, I think you have the essence nailed. Nice job by Ketch Secor making a song out of it. Have you seen Matt Andersen's version? Amazing what a little energy does for the song.
Do a search for Matt Andersen at Hugh's Room with the time 7:13
Bob Dylan is one of the most famous musicians of ALL TIME just cuz he only did part of the song or not of course they will give him credit because he is so famous!! Your an idiot if you think he doesnt deserve the credit!!!! Lets see you right hundreds of songs that are as famous as Bob Dylan's
guys, all you have to do is google and you will see that this IS a Bob Dylan song first. Rock Me Mama was the original name but Dylan never finished the song. So when Ketch and OCMS got a hold of it, they re-named it and finished it. All giving credit to Dylan.
no, this is titled wrong, bob dylan wrote the original melody and diff words, just search rock me momma instead of wagon wheel, this guy needs to do his research..
No he doesn't need to do his research, more people that NEED to hear this will find it this way since they don't know the true name they know it by this title, people that have already heard it for ever, will probably know it by your title
My understanding is that Dylan wrote the chorus only, Secor did the lyrics and melody of the verses.
But I would say Secor wrote it in the same way Dylan gets credit for the songs on Modern Times (and the many more he took from other places.) That is not a dig at Dylan, and I am much more a Dylan fan than OCMS fan, but Ketch Secor made this song what it is. It is credited to both on the album.
I don't think it fair you give Dylan credit in the search function. Although he did come up with four chords and few words, he couldn't even come up with any verses. The true talent with this song comes from Secor and O.C.M.S. for his ability to identify dylans chords and chorus then come up with the amazing lyrics and the rest of the band for the great musical talent in the song.
the botton line is dylan wrote the music, and the lyrics to the chorus....secor wrote the lyrics to the verses....it's not that dylan "couldn't" come up with the lyrics as you say...it was just a bit of a song idea that he recorded and left alone...I'm sure he has hundreds like that...secor heard it and wrote the verses, brilliantly i might add...those 4 chords remain the same throughout the song, secor changed nothing in the music and kept the chorus...so how could you not give credit to dylan
@1after909 I agree with all that you have said to prestonwolfe but I disagree with your tag line which says "written by Bob Dylan additional lyrics by Ketch Secor"
Secor not only wrote ALL the versus he created a whole new feel and even a slightly different melody line to Dylan's in the verse.
@after909 Given this enormous creative input to the version you sing, AND the fact that the Bobmeister himself is happy to have this officially stamped as co-written by Dylan/Secor and forfeit half the royalties to Ketch it only seems unresonable of you to not give Ketch more dues than you do.
@1after909 I agree! I'm doing the same thing with a Marley song right now. It's a great song and i don't think i could come near what Marley would have done with it had he wanted to.
@prestonwolfe Dylan came up with "rock me mama like a wagon wheel rock me mama any way you feel. Rock me mama like the wind and the rain rock me mama like a south bound train." Without that there would be no WAGON WHEEL.
@prestonwolfe I know it's been a year since you wrote this comment. Thought it worth mentioning that OCMS give Dylan credit in their liner notes on the album.
@jonnyjaxn yes but you insinuated that you couldnt possibly be trying to sound like dylan because "In fact he never sang this song, so iwouldn't if had anything to go by even if i did...."

@1after909 I agree! I'm doing the same thing with a Marley song right now. It's a great song and i don't think i could come near what Marley would have done with it had he wanted to.

@1after909 you said it yourself all dylan had was "just a bit of a song idea" secor made it a real song.

Musiccrazyteen 2 years ago
@prestonwolfe i agree it was by O.C.M.S.
Flyingwars 1 year ago
O.C.M.S. just resung it but he really did come up with it
butterfly30303 1 year ago
@prestonwolfe Really if you read more about him he couldnt read and write, So he could come up wtih songs but sum1 had to write them for him.
butterfly30303 1 year ago
@prestonwolfe Dylan came up with "rock me mama like a wagon wheel rock me mama any way you feel. Rock me mama like the wind and the rain rock me mama like a south bound train." Without that there would be no WAGON WHEEL.

@prestonwolfe I know it's been a year since you wrote this comment. Thought it worth mentioning that OCMS give Dylan credit in their liner notes on the album.

Okay so who's the original artist for this song... I thought Against Me! were the original writers :S now I'm just confused.
micaylathejuggalette 2 years ago
Old Crow Medicine Show wrote the song based off of a chorus Bob Dylan wrote.

vocals are close to dylan, but/and it still sounds great.

thank you, i wasn't trying to sound like dylan, in fact he never sang this song, so iwouldn't of had anything to go by even if i did....
1after909 2 years ago
@dharmaxpunk dont let him misinform you. dylan did sing this song. there is actually a recording of him singing it here on youtube.
jonnyjaxn 1 year ago
@jonnyjaxn dylan only sang the chorus
1after909 1 year ago
@jonnyjaxn yes but you insinuated that you couldnt possibly be trying to sound like dylan because "In fact he never sang this song, so iwouldn't if had anything to go by even if i did...."
jonnyjaxn 1 year ago
nice cover... but just because your covering a bob dylan song doesn't mean you have to ty sound exactly like him put your own flare on it.

I guess I'll be the only hater...an original touch would have been nice. Repeating 4 chords isn't too hard.

I did idiot, he didn't do anything unique with it. No solo, nothing.
logan84burton 2 years ago
i could have very easily added hammer ons, decending bass notes etc...but i felt it would of disturbed the natural rythymn of the song..
1after909 2 years ago
some songs don't need solos. MOST songs don't need solos.
this song is a masterpiece no matter how you play it

Anyone who spells as badly as you do has lost the right to call anyone an idiot. Thank you, come again.
1after909- Hey man, you stand by your song, I respect that.
