I think some Caps fans I know are losing more sleep over this than some Wings fans. Ever since the end of the Caps series I have been plagued by 2 of my best friends (Caps fans) stating that the Pens won that series because the refs penalty calling was biased. Sure, the refs called 15 more penalties on the Caps than the Pens. But are ALL 15 calls going to be wrong? I think its more or less they cant accept their comeuppance. I can't speak for the Kings or Islanders (to be honest, I haven't heard of either of those franchises being in danger of relocationg), but I can tell you this about the Penguins. The only reason why there was a "relocation scare" a few years ago was that Mario Lemieux and the rest of the Pens ownership were trying to strike a deal with Pittsburgh civil authorities regarding the building of a new arena. About all of the other teams in the NHL had new or improved arenas to play in, while Mellon
Arena was the oldest arena in the league and due to be replaced. The new arena deal was VITAL to keeping the Pens in Pittsburgh. In 2007, after much concern, the arena deal was finally reached, and an agreement was made that the Pens would remain in Pittsburgh for at least another 30 years because of it. Interestingly enough, KC was one of the potential sites rumoured to host the franchise if it relocated. So the Pens aren't going anywhere any time soon...not sure about LA or NYI though. Cheers!

Hockey is not the same game anymore. Did anyone notice how Kronwall's big hits nearly vanished in the finals? He gets tossed out of a Hawks game for a CLEAN bone crushing hit. Perhaps if he laid Crosby out a couple times it would have been a different outcome. God knows Crosby can't handle being hit. But he didn't and the Pens won. This was such a close series, either team deserved to win. I wouldn't be surprised at all if its these two teams again. No doubt Hossa was hurting as well.
He tried to get Malkin a few times (and I think he did lay a pretty good one on him once), but Malkin did pretty well at avoiding him. They didn't have Kronwall out against Crosby's line too much, that's probably why you never saw him get hit by Kronwall. A lot of players were hurting on the Pens side too...specifically our best D man Gonchar from the Ovechkin knee on knee hit that had him out for a few games.
Why hockey is so messed up right now is because the players just don't know what's going to be called. It changes game to game. If you are going to call obstruction very closely, then call it. Don't let it slide one game then get all stern the next. Wings were out of gas and hurting, most of which probably came at the hands of the Ducks. But that's how it goes sometimes. The saddest part of it all is the refing of the last couple years was put in place for Crosby.
There's no way to say for sure that they were put in place specifically for Crosby. IMO, they changed it after the lockout so they could have a faster game with more scoring so they could attract more fans (much like when they changed the NFL rules drastically in the 70's). Sure it plays into Crosby's game (and Ovechkins, and many others), but it was for ratings, not any one player.
Been watching hockey for nearly 20 years. What many seem to miss is it's not the number of penalties a team gets called for, it's the timing of the calls. Refs know better then anyone of us when a call will stop a surging team or the lack there of. I am not a fan of either of these teams and yes the Pens got called for more, but many were meaningless calls that had little to no impact on the game. The obvious missed too many men on the ice is one of those situations.
Well I don't see how they were meaningless calls, when every PP carries a bigger opportunity to score. Yes the too many men on the ice was a bad missed call (I wish they had caught it just so Wings fans wouldn't whine as much), but the play itself didn't lead to any scoring by the Pens. There were however missed calls that did lead to RW's goals (i.e. Hossa slash on Dupuis stick, wings score 5 seconds later) as well as Zetts covering the puck in the crease, which could have been a penalty shot.

Ok, I don't believe a word of you saying that you heard the ref saying that. Believe me, the Pens had nearly twice as many penalties as the Wings all series, I don't think they were afraid to call penalties against them lol. It was a missed call, that didn't even lead to a goal by the Pens, unlike a couple of missed calls that led to Wings goals (specifically in game 1 &2, that even the announcers touched on). That doesn't make much sense. Detroit's Cup parades have over a million fans attend. I think the figure for the Pens parade was approx 30,000. That's not 10% showing up at their parades. I think some Caps fans I know are losing more sleep over this than some Wings fans. Ever since the end of the Caps series I have been plagued by 2 of my best friends (Caps fans) stating that the Pens won that series because the refs penalty calling was biased. Sure, the refs called 15 more penalties on the Caps than the Pens. But are ALL 15 calls going to be wrong? I think its more or less they cant accept their comeuppance. I can't speak for the Kings or Islanders (to be honest, I haven't heard of either of those franchises being in danger of relocationg), but I can tell you this about the Penguins. The only reason why there was a "relocation scare" a few years ago was that Mario Lemieux and the rest of the Pens ownership were trying to strike a deal with Pittsburgh civil authorities regarding the building of a new arena. Arena was the oldest arena in the league and due to be replaced. The new arena deal was VITAL to keeping the Pens in Pittsburgh. In 2007, after much concern, the arena deal was finally reached, and an agreement was made that the Pens would remain in Pittsburgh for at least another 30 years because of it. Interestingly enough, KC was one of the potential sites rumoured to host the franchise if it relocated. So the Pens aren't going anywhere any time soon...not sure about LA or NYI though. Cheers!

Hockey is not the same game anymore. Did anyone notice how Kronwall's big hits nearly vanished in the finals? He gets tossed out of a Hawks game for a CLEAN bone crushing hit. Perhaps if he laid Crosby out a couple times it would have been a different outcome. God knows Crosby can't handle being hit. But he didn't and the Pens won. This was such a close series, either team deserved to win. I wouldn't be surprised at all if its these two teams again. No doubt Hossa was hurting as well.

He tried to get Malkin a few times (and I think he did lay a pretty good one on him once), but Malkin did pretty well at avoiding him. They didn't have Kronwall out against Crosby's line too much, that's probably why you never saw him get hit by Kronwall. A lot of players were hurting on the Pens side too...specifically our best D man Gonchar from the Ovechkin knee on knee hit that had him out for a few games.

Why hockey is so messed up right now is because the players just don't know what's going to be called. It changes game to game. If you are going to call obstruction very closely, then call it. Don't let it slide one game then get all stern the next. Wings were out of gas and hurting, most of which probably came at the hands of the Ducks. But that's how it goes sometimes. The saddest part of it all is the refing of the last couple years was put in place for Crosby.

There's no way to say for sure that they were put in place specifically for Crosby. IMO, they changed it after the lockout so they could have a faster game with more scoring so they could attract more fans (much like when they changed the NFL rules drastically in the 70's). Sure it plays into Crosby's game (and Ovechkins, and many others), but it was for ratings, not any one player.

Been watching hockey for nearly 20 years. What many seem to miss is it's not the number of penalties a team gets called for, it's the timing of the calls. Refs know better then anyone of us when a call will stop a surging team or the lack there of. I am not a fan of either of these teams and yes the Pens got called for more, but many were meaningless calls that had little to no impact on the game. The obvious missed too many men on the ice is one of those situations.

Well I don't see how they were meaningless calls, when every PP carries a bigger opportunity to score. Yes the too many men on the ice was a bad missed call (I wish they had caught it just so Wings fans wouldn't whine as much), but the play itself didn't lead to any scoring by the Pens. There were however missed calls that did lead to RW's goals (i.e. Hossa slash on Dupuis stick, wings score 5 seconds later) as well as Zetts covering the puck in the crease, which could have been a penalty shot.

Ok, I don't believe a word of you saying that you heard the ref saying that. Believe me, the Pens had nearly twice as many penalties as the Wings all series, I don't think they were afraid to call penalties against them lol. It was a missed call, that didn't even lead to a goal by the Pens, unlike a couple of missed calls that led to Wings goals (specifically in game 1 &2, that even the announcers touched on). Just deal with the fact that both sides got away with some stuff and suck up the loss.

What does it matter if he hasn't paid his dues. Every year, one rookie or a guy who hasn't been the NHL for a long time will win a Stanley Cup. And I think Crosby has paid his dues. Since he was a 14, Crosby has had HIGH expectations. When he was drafted by Pittsburgh, the expectation placed on him was a Cup. Now he has one, Like Gretzky when he first started, was a whiner, Crosby will mature out of it and be one of the best when it's all done. And how was it a shame when the Pens won in 91?

lol refs on their side??? Did you even watch the finals? And particularly game 7? The power play calls were COMPLETLEY in detroits favor. There were so many dirty plays from detroit that didnt get called, so no you got nothin the refs did everything but literally hand detroit the win and they still couldnt get it, how you have the balls to even joke that the refs were on Pens side is beyond me, even the commentators noticed how lopsided the power plays were in detroits favor you got nothin.

That doesn't make much sense. Detroit's Cup parades have over a million fans attend. I think the figure for the Pens parade was approx 30,000. That's not 10% showing up at their parades. I'm a Toronto fan and I have to admit, there is not other team that has more die hard fans then the Wings. It's just the cold hard truth.

lol it was 375,000...25K more than the Steelers parade even( though the Steelers parade was in the middle of winter). Detroit has a much larger population than Pittsburgh as well...there aren't even 375K people that live in the city limits of Pittsburgh. Both the Penguins, and the Red wings played great in this series. I was standing in the living room with my eyes on the t.v, wanting that last 32 seconds to run out and yelling, come on pens! When the clock ran out, I ran outside and yelled YEA!!!!!!!! as loud as I could. That feeling of pressure I had reminded me of four months ago when the Steelers won there 6th super bowl. And his diving save with 2 seconds left was NOT lucky it was heroic. He shifted his entire body weight to the right off of one skate to make one of the best saves ive ever seen with one second left in regulation. Quit undermining the great effort by the Pens, who did it for the most part without their captain.
