Ravenholm was a mining town at the time, when combine discovered it, they did a massive headcrab shell bombardment and the town became infestated with zombies. Father Grigori was a survivor and set up booby traps for the zombies to fall in. You also see humans that were hanged, sliced, burned and suffered from those horrific deaths; those humans fell into his traps. Father Grigori says "A shepherd must tend to his flock, especially when they have grown...unruly" means he must stay and do his job

There are two greatest moments in Ravenholm - the whole Grigory's farewell scene and when you see the light at the end of the tonnel. It makes you feel like "Oh thank God I made it!I escaped from this damned hell! " You feel such a relief every time you got there althought you are perfectly aware that the game itself is far from over and zpmbies, headcrabes and combines are waiting for your just around the corner. But at least you will never never ever again be in Ravenholm... until next game

The thing I loved about ravenholm, is that when your enemies cease to use firearms against you, the ammo dries up.

I played through it on Hard the first time, and I remember watching the ticking inevitability of complete ammo depletion and then having to decide alternative means of destruction.

That, and I got stuck, and only had 6 shots in my magnum for an absolute emergency. I remember thinking, this game is amazingly screwed up.

I ran out of both pistols - it was my first playthrough. I didn't know the puzzles and the point was that enemies stop dropping ammo. That's what made it freaky.
