Thanks so much for your videos...Whenever I want to know something about logic, I´m searching for sflogic ninja instead of looking it up in the reference...
As a Logic beginner i can assure you that I have watched A LOT of video tutorials, but yours are the best! You're explaining everything well and you also explain the theory beyond it!
@sacredgeometry Its not. You have to set up a bus to allow the compressor to receive an instrument channels audio. If you are working with an audio channel, then you can just easily route the audio straight into the compressor without a bus. Just the way logic works.
@SKETIMUSIC I commented on the wrong video :) there was one where the guy routed it through a bus then through a couple of tracks for absolutely no reason.
also, what is the difference between fat, vca, platinum, opto, type r, type U please? and which logic compressor preset would you suggest me for my sub(40Hz-100Hz) kick? thanks
but this means that when you make the drums part, you have to make the kick separate from the rest of the drums(snare, hit hat, symbals etc) in order to sidechain the kick with the sub? I mean the symbal, hithat etc doesn't have to be also sidechain with the sub ? isn't it?
lol thats funny i checked out this vid a long time ago then visited pyrmind with my friend jeff not too long ago and didnt realize i was watching one of the teachers vids already.
I've always heard this thumping in trance music... always thought they programmed the bass specifically to quiet out when the kick hit (like, as in, manually adjusted volume envelopes). Didn't know it was that easy! Thank you for enlightening me on this! I can think of a lot of cases where this is useful (not just techno!).
I just want to say how awesome I think this is that your doing, you have helped me and thousands of others probably so unconditionally through all your videos and I just want to let you know that I really love you for that. And I hope to see more awesome logictips because it sure boosted me on this Logicjourney where I know I would be stuck for ages otherwise. And I am sure you created some nice karma for yourself and I wish you best of luck with things in your life, you sure deserved it.
I also forgot to say that you and your tutorials are awesome, it's so nice to just go in here and learn about this wonderful program, so many things that I would scratch my head about for days that I can just find here. The only thing I regret about getting logic is that I didn't get it faster, I was stuck on Pc and cubase and oh my god I had troubles on PC and now they are gone and I can actually focus on making music. Thanks alot, keep it up
What is the difference Ninja to choose it to listen to the bus or actually just choose from that list "audio 1" you see you have that there, that also sidechain it the same way. Maybe it's just a faster way they made it for you logic it works at least both ways, always nice to have more ways of doing things or maybe there is a benefit of your way I don't know of?
SFLogicNinja, you, my friend, are perhaps one of the most engaging people I have ever come across when it comes to explaining and sparking my interest in logic tutorials, and I can't reason with myself why you would do this for free, I would happily pay good money for you're hugely above-par tutorials. You also seem like a good guy, not a total nerd like the other guys on here who make these topics hard to relate to. Thanks for the fantastic tutorials and being so awesome!
Thanks for the great clip. I'm now getting into House Music production and had a muddy groove/beat, but the sidechain helped. You mentioned "Freezing" towards the end, is that like a macro for Logic? And can you refer me to any vid or article that describes how to do it? Thank you!
When side chaining, it's better to use very fast compression attack or no attack at all so that it gives the kick's attack more space to thump through the mix. However, with very fast compression attack you'll end up with a more "abrupt" pumping effect. You need to find the right balance, but there's no point in side chaining if the compressor starts too late.
im wondering if you could do a video on some more advanced side chaining? if you have time :) on maybe french house sort of stuff? like phonat or daft punk?
Hi David, I have been trying to get the bass of the ES M to drone on as you say in the video and cannot get the sound to last more than four bars. It just fades out. I have watched this video several times and have tried to match up the compressor and the ES M settings with what I have. I cannot find one setting that is not the same with the ones I can see in the video.
What is the trick to get the sound to sustain as long as yours did? Thanks a lot David. Glad to see you back.
i've been watching your videos off and on fir the past year(every since I got logic Pro) and I have learned TONS about logic. This software yet NEVER fails to amaze me even after using it EVERYDAY. Please keep making these killer videos man. They make for excellent learning tools and even better refresher courses. Thanks again and PLEASE keep up the excellent work
You are extremely helpful in all of your videos. Thank you so much. My question to you would be midimapping. Are there any templates out there or a great way to set up knobs and faders in logic?
i was just using the send to send the kick to the bus, but nothing was happening at the compressor of my bass. but when i set the outpue of the kick to the bus, it works. i'll keep fiddling. thanks
@coolmrcroc It geerally depends on what software your using.
What I do in logic is route the kick to a bus, then on that bus select the output as nothing, The compressor can still see this bus as a sidechain input.
got it working, why I couldn't I get it working with David's method.
"If you use a bus, the bus channel must have the volume set to 0 db and you choose the bus instead of the audio track as the compressors sidechain input."
We have control by click, hold and sliding mouse up or down to adjust output level of the bus channel. Set that puppy to 0db and you're pumping.
I have been completely unsuccessful at sidechaining anything. It's not as easy as you'd think. I want to sidechain an ES2 to an Apple Loop like a bass line/loop etc and have it be affected by the ES2.
It's got to be impossible or next to it. I have tried everything.

Ill call you Dave Tripod Head...I really dont care...hahahah..That was actually pretty funny Dave... You should send that script to the makers of the Simpsons.
But I bet you dont really care
Now Dave, in regards the side chaining Tip. Well....a solid note to create the effect of an offbeat bass is hardly effective as just programming in off beat bass. MUCH better is actually creating a bassline with different notes, mess with note lengths, and the sidechain is MUCH more effective
The off beat side chain bass you claim is very popular in Trance actually isnt. How about a tutorial for the kids with syncopatedocatves style bass line (think Georgio Moroder) Side chain that. Layer the bass with some tasty chords, and guess what..Side chain that. Honestly Dave, if i have to come round and teach you a lesson I will, but I must charge you a hefty fee of course
Actually Dave, I like your style. But do you really care ?
Well, you got a webcam and an internet connection apparently. Be my guest and become chompypsytranceguruman.
You'll do well.... I know there are lots of folks asking about psytrance basslines and stuff. If I get around to making another video, I'll consider your enthusiastic request.
Even though I am a Jedi Master of Trance and of course other genres) I actually don't have a webcam, and I couldn't possibly out my self because I'm a sneaky little chicken.
However, I will endorese your skills. You are one of the very few good knowledgeable people on here, and your skills are not limited to one format. Your really an engineer me thinks, a proper one. someone that would work well with bands. Put you in the studio with a producer and good things would happen. Ears and Skills
I'm a full-time composer who is required to turn on a dime from classical to electronic, and when I make these videos I tend to whittle things WAY down to get the info across instead of wank all over the place. I have a lot of respect for the Trance genre... one of my good friends is a DJ named MARS who introduced me to Trance in my younger years. Sometimes when I make these videos I'm afraid that I misrepresent the depth of my musical knowledge. hmm..
All you need to know is that somewhere in a mountainous far off land theres a wee short guy walking about who often has a smile on his face as he conjures up your video intro. Im not gay!
I thought your shadow style audio manipulation drum stuff on one of the other Vids was top notch. I of course do know about that *sniff* but it was just grand to see someone doing it with style. V often the beginners have no idea know how amazing working with audio can be. You have peaked my interest in Logic
you can do the same effect by arranging shorter bass sounds with the kicks and setting the velocity of the bass. But this is a good tip for other types of sounds, like a trance lead.
Hey folks, I'm trying to find the original of this video so I can re-post it. I'm hoping this is just a YouTube error and they didn't actually pull it for some other reason. Thanks for waiting...
Whow. Dave, I really don`t find the right words in english to show you my respect and let you know how you`re helping me with logic. I`m working as a producer and sounddesigner and for years logic included so many mysteries for me. when I found your videos, one for one you changed them to knowledge?Ähhh hope you get my point. you are the first to combine logic, fun and competence to show us what we need.thaaaanx
your a legend. you have a wonderful teaching style, honestly. clear, positive and supportive. thanks for your help, I hope you get paid for this sort of thing some how.
I was using firefox and switched to Safari and no luck...emptied cache, cleared cookies, cleared all history and data from firefox and tried again and still doesn't work :(
Sidechaining in dance music is great for moving the bass out of the way for the kick to shine through. In that case, you want to set the attack for 0.0, right? The way you had it seems kind of weird, since the bass was ducking after the attack of the drum. Kind of counterproductive, isn't it?
I thought logic would be with less steps then in ableton live turns out its more to it than just that.
In ableton you apply the compressor to the bass then route the kick to use the VST compressor from the bass. not extra buttons to press - works great and free.
really appreciate the videos dave, Im new to Logic and coming from a cubase background i taught the logic learning curve would be a nightmare but you make it that bit easy with a few giggles on the way!
about the SoS article and Younger Brother, I believe it was Simon Postford (Hallucinogen, Shpongle, twisted records) made that comment, but the problem with freeze is that you can't then edit the audio which is what I think he wants to do, i.e. export the audio and then mangle. Cubase has a better implementation for this (right click) as well as offline processing which we have all be bitching and moaning about, and hopefully will be added on soon
Hey, give this a shot... click on an audio region, ad hit 'shift-w'... Now that the file is open in Soundtrack Pro, check out the Process menu... There's your offline processing! (If I understand you right).. I'm going to go over this in my next vid... Instead of freezing, a solo and quick offline bounce can also solve the exporting issue...
intersting! that would be the same feature all right.. didn't know about that and haven't really gotten into SP that much but I can see it is kind of useful after all ;-)
now if SP can be integrated more into the audio editor of Logic we will have some real magic!
I just found you two days ago and boy am I glad I did! I haver watched Logic Tips #1-18 so far and I will continue to soak up as much wisdom as you are willing to share. Thank you very much for sharing!
another great video, had not a clue what sidechaining was all about (just ignored it), but now I'm on the way to enlightenment....big thanks as ever for your vids, keep the good work up . . .
Hey there David, Many thanx for the video. Your tutorials are really clear but I have a problem doing sidechaining. When I go Aux1 of Ultrabeat I just cant setup No Imputs (what you actually do on 04:01 on this video) and the compressor cant hear the kick. What I'm doing wrong? Thanks
yeh .. you can freeze n stuff but compared to cakewalk's sonar.. bouncing to a track and freezing is a totally different ball game over there which is something I personally miss. With one click you can freeze a track and it creates a totally editable audio track from it .. "which is nice" .. anyway .. loving your videos :D
Thanks for the demo, I was a big fan for Garage Band for a long time, just switch over to Logic Express 8 a few days ago as I want to produce better quality music, but I have no clue how to use it, until now, I'm looking forward to watch all your logic 8 videos. Thanks!
Leopard is awesome. I run it, and am pretty darn happy with it.
I'm not sure what's up with the synth, but the reason I have 22 inputs is because that's the kind of audio interface I use. If your audio interface has only 2, then that's all you can chose from. Are you talking about buses? That might be a different matter....
Hey there David, thanks for this video it really helped. I just got Logic Studio today.
When you went o the compressor at 3.14m you had 22 inputs, I only have 2! I must be missing something?
I noticed that when i was checking out the pads I had this message "Plug in "hybrid mor" is not available". I havent moved any folders around. Can you off any advice on this, I bet youve been asked it already.
Using a bus allows you to send ANY track or instrument to sidechain the compressor. This means you can actually supply more than one signal to the sidechain input. It also allows the sound from said track or instrument to go to the output unmolested. (hi Dion)
Incredible lesson. Thanks. Question: how could you replicate the bass track "pulse" without hearing the drums? I tried setting it up and then muting the drums, but this obviously doesn't work since the compressor needs to "hear" the drums to know to compress. A song like LCD Soundsystem's "Someone Great" seems to use this effect (swelling, pulse) without it tied to the beat. Can the sidechaining effect be used for that?
The trick there would be to make the bus on the drums track "Pre-Fader". Then you can pull the fader all the way down without affecting the signal going to the sidechain of the compressor. You can make the bus pre-fader by clicking and holding on the send assignment button and then you will see the options for pre-fader and post fader.
haha ... Maybe so. If you've made the send Pre-fader, pulled down the channels volume fader and pulled down the aux that is associated with the buss, there's nowhere else drums could make it through.... unless you have something assigned somewhere else that you haven't listed. Good Luck!
Nope. Thanks again. I think I need to give my head and ears a break. Can you tell me why ultrabeat defaults to have a pattern? How can I have it default to no pattern, empty slate, tabula rasa? It is annoying having to manually delete. Thanks for everything.
Sure.... basically, just erase everything and then save it as "#default" and it'll be your new default preset. I think you just have to choose save after you erase everything and you won't even have to type the name.
See the comment below - you need to send the Drums pre fader and pull the fader down so there is no audio - just the signal being fed to the compressor. =) The other option is to just mute the drums region or the track controls in the arrange window - not sure if it will work by muting the channel strip? Maybe it's the other way round. =)
Thanks for the shout out David, really appreciate it. Had a blast. Pretty darn cool community that is building here, thanks to your skills and generocity in sharing them. Respect.
B)I've followed this and No 19, but can't get it working!
Argh! following step-by-step all your signal flow, my bass doesn't follow the kick - and then in No 19, my vocal doesn't vocode. I've re-watched slowly five times.
If you want to compress your bass as well as side chain should you use a 2nd compressor to compress your bassline ???

HOWTO: A method for sidechaining in Logic Pro 8.
got it working, why I couldn't I get it working with David's method.
"If you use a bus, the bus channel must have the volume set to 0 db and you choose the bus instead of the audio track as the compressors sidechain input."
We have control by click, hold and sliding mouse up or down to adjust output level of the bus channel. Set that puppy to 0db and you're pumping.

However, I will endorese your skills. You are one of the very few good knowledgeable people on here, and your skills are not limited to one format. Your really an engineer me thinks, a proper one. someone that would work well with bands. Put you in the studio with a producer and good things would happen. Ears and Skills

LOL, thanks for the kudos, ace.

Aw, you're sweet. Thanks for the kindness.
Have a great one, ace.

You mean just send the output instead of bussing?
SFLogicNinja 2 years ago
Couldn't you just make the kick's output that bus and just have the compressor listen to that bus?

a-yup. Indeed.

but younger brother are still pretty darn good

yeah they are. I was just shooting my mouth off.
SFLogicNinja 2 years ago
you can do the same effect by arranging shorter bass sounds with the kicks and setting the velocity of the bass. But this is a good tip for other types of sounds, like a trance lead.

I`m working as a producer and sounddesigner and for years logic included so many mysteries for me. when I found your videos, one for one you changed them to knowledge?Ähhh hope you get my point. you are the first to combine logic, fun and competence to show us what we need.thaaaanx

Sidechaining in dance music is great for moving the bass out of the way for the kick to shine through. In that case, you want to set the attack for 0.0, right? The way you had it seems kind of weird, since the bass was ducking after the attack of the drum. Kind of counterproductive, isn't it?
iwillmaceyou 3 years ago
so helpful, i never got sidechaining, your videos are extremely useful, thanks!
tehpainkiller 3 years ago
what other dynamic effects can you sidechain other then the compressor and noise gate?

can you use a square wave side chained to trigger midi, something like an external sampler?

sundarvignesh 3 years ago
I thought logic would be with less steps then in ableton live turns out its more to it than just that.
In ableton you apply the compressor to the bass then route the kick to use the VST compressor from the bass. not extra buttons to press - works great and free.

really appreciate the videos dave, Im new to Logic and coming from a cubase background i taught the logic learning curve would be a nightmare but you make it that bit easy with a few giggles on the way!

hey great videos- just want to say thanks!
about the SoS article and Younger Brother, I believe it was Simon Postford (Hallucinogen, Shpongle, twisted records) made that comment, but the problem with freeze is that you can't then edit the audio which is what I think he wants to do, i.e. export the audio and then mangle. Cubase has a better implementation for this (right click) as well as offline processing which we have all be bitching and moaning about, and hopefully will be added on soon
daleks 3 years ago
Hey, give this a shot... click on an audio region, ad hit 'shift-w'... Now that the file is open in Soundtrack Pro, check out the Process menu... There's your offline processing! (If I understand you right).. I'm going to go over this in my next vid... Instead of freezing, a solo and quick offline bounce can also solve the exporting issue...
SFLogicNinja 3 years ago
intersting! that would be the same feature all right.. didn't know about that and haven't really gotten into SP that much but I can see it is kind of useful after all ;-)
now if SP can be integrated more into the audio editor of Logic we will have some real magic!
the force is strong with you...

another great video, had not a clue what sidechaining was all about (just ignored it), but now I'm on the way to enlightenment....big thanks as ever for your vids, keep the good work up . . .
sedumjp 3 years ago
Hey there David, Many thanx for the video. Your tutorials are really clear but I have a problem doing sidechaining. When I go Aux1 of Ultrabeat I just cant setup No Imputs (what you actually do on 04:01 on this video) and the compressor cant hear the kick. What I'm doing wrong? Thanks
theblock080 3 years ago
yeh .. you can freeze n stuff but compared to cakewalk's sonar.. bouncing to a track and freezing is a totally different ball game over there which is something I personally miss. With one click you can freeze a track and it creates a totally editable audio track from it .. "which is nice" .. anyway .. loving your videos :D

I just looked in the hybrid morph folder and its empty. there are a couple of other folders which are empty too. Is this the same with you?
The videos are a great help, you explain them in an excellent way which is easy to understand.
Do you run Leopard? I was thinking of upgrading to it, should it? Keep up the good work.
zodiacie 4 years ago
Leopard is awesome. I run it, and am pretty darn happy with it.
I'm not sure what's up with the synth, but the reason I have 22 inputs is because that's the kind of audio interface I use. If your audio interface has only 2, then that's all you can chose from. Are you talking about buses? That might be a different matter....
SFLogicNinja 4 years ago
Hey there David, thanks for this video it really helped. I just got Logic Studio today.
When you went o the compressor at 3.14m you had 22 inputs, I only have 2! I must be missing something?
I noticed that when i was checking out the pads I had this message "Plug in "hybrid mor" is not available". I havent moved any folders around. Can you off any advice on this, I bet youve been asked it already.
zodiacie 4 years ago
Thanks!

Are you using the bus instead of the track so volume changes on the source track dont affect the compressor..?
dbassfour 4 years ago
Using a bus allows you to send ANY track or instrument to sidechain the compressor. This means you can actually supply more than one signal to the sidechain input. It also allows the sound from said track or instrument to go to the output unmolested. (hi Dion)
SFLogicNinja 4 years ago
boo yar - that makes sense now. Im goin through all your videos while my macbook is being repaired. (hey buddday!)

weeddigger 4 years ago
Incredible lesson. Thanks. Question: how could you replicate the bass track "pulse" without hearing the drums? I tried setting it up and then muting the drums, but this obviously doesn't work since the compressor needs to "hear" the drums to know to compress. A song like LCD Soundsystem's "Someone Great" seems to use this effect (swelling, pulse) without it tied to the beat. Can the sidechaining effect be used for that?
HFSociety 4 years ago
The trick there would be to make the bus on the drums track "Pre-Fader". Then you can pull the fader all the way down without affecting the signal going to the sidechain of the compressor. You can make the bus pre-fader by clicking and holding on the send assignment button and then you will see the options for pre-fader and post fader.
Treatmentroom2 4 years ago
Thanks, but I can't get that to work. I still hear the drum beat being fed to the compressor.
HFSociety 4 years ago
Did you pull down the aux track that is associated with the bus that you put on the send?
Treatmentroom2 4 years ago
Did you pull down the fader on the Aux track that is associated with the bus that you put on the drum track?
Treatmentroom2 4 years ago
Yes. I think it may be by ears playing tricks on my. The pulse of the bass may be making my brain think it is hearing drums that aren't there!
HFSociety 4 years ago
haha ... Maybe so. If you've made the send Pre-fader, pulled down the channels volume fader and pulled down the aux that is associated with the buss, there's nowhere else drums could make it through.... unless you have something assigned somewhere else that you haven't listed. Good Luck!
Treatmentroom2 4 years ago
Nope. Thanks again. I think I need to give my head and ears a break. Can you tell me why ultrabeat defaults to have a pattern? How can I have it default to no pattern, empty slate, tabula rasa? It is annoying having to manually delete. Thanks for everything.
HFSociety 4 years ago
Sure.... basically, just erase everything and then save it as "#default" and it'll be your new default preset. I think you just have to choose save after you erase everything and you won't even have to type the name.
Treatmentroom2 4 years ago
See the comment below - you need to send the Drums pre fader and pull the fader down so there is no audio - just the signal being fed to the compressor. =) The other option is to just mute the drums region or the track controls in the arrange window - not sure if it will work by muting the channel strip? Maybe it's the other way round. =)

Awesome! I always wondered how Robbie Rivera got his sound back in 2003. I tried to emulate it by automating the volume (up and down) on the bass.

A)You the man for making these!
B)I've followed this and No 19, but can't get it working!
Argh! following step-by-step all your signal flow, my bass doesn't follow the kick - and then in No 19, my vocal doesn't vocode. I've re-watched slowly five times.
