I miss this ol'town. My father, Ken MacLeod who just passed away, was born and raised there. He would tell me about his life stories of when he lived there and things were different. He took us four times and I have to go back. It's been over 15 years and I miss her. My father would always talk about Lewis as "home". Now that is what home is to me. I will be coming home soon. I love you Dad.
@1scot4scotland i know, ive had that argument thrown at me before! spoiling the landscape?? Emm....not much of a landscape, unless brown grass and some rocks counts as landscape. The moor is the best place for them as there is no hills to block the wind and its just a big, empty bit of land that serves no purpose other than making the island look more barren than it already is. I hope i dont sound to negative, seriously, i love the island, but some of the people....just really confuse me! But i
@1scot4scotland as creating jobs which are drastically needed. I think the people that moan about windmills need to get a grip and stop being so stuck in their ways that they would be selfish enough to let an opportunity like that pass by. Thats just my opinion though!
Again I agree with you on that. The one thing that annoys me is where the power that's generated goes, but as we seen in the last election Scotland looks like it's moving in a direction where we will finally be able to benefit from our natural resources. That potential for the outer Hebrides is monumental in terms of what else has come that way in recent years. As for spoiling the landscape, well I think turbines are a symbol of the 21st century that every country will have soon.
@1scot4scotland i remember the whole windfarm arguments, i for one am totally for the windmills because they are atleast making use of what lewis has to offer, when life gives you lemons, you know? People complain about wanting to keep the islands heritage alive or watever, which i get, but then silly things are made more 'modern' (town centre for example) costing money which could be invested in something that would actually benefit the island which i think windfarm would definately do as well
@1scot4scotland yeah like the people are just sheep, going with the flow not even thinking about it, the council just does wat it wants because the people just go with it....as for the job situation that is an actual joke its ridiculus especially wat with the new school being built, but no new apprenticeships? Its like nobody can be bothered to even try and improve the place.
I see you don't like council very much. I wonder what kind of fresh Ideas, if any are in place right now? What's your view on Green energy? I ask this because I know it divides opinion. For me I think that the positives far outweigh the negatives. I look at it like this: People complain that others think lewis is still in the stoneage and It's one of the windiest places in Europe. Windpower is 21st century-cutting edge technology, but the same people say "oh we can't have that".
@1scot4scotland wow man, thats deep. Really got me thinking! Well tbh i dont mind the weather i dont find it cold at all, and really i dont find it boring at all but trying to explain this to people and theyr like "wtf?? Jeez i want off this island" and i get wat they mean but i guess everyones depressed right now wat with the financial difficulties and what not, i just miss the old days yano?
I understand that repetitive cycle that can get people down. I think (and I suspect many will agree) that there needs to be a change or to use a better word...enhancement in the Lewis psyche, a more positive one. That will not pop out of thin air though. Stornoway needs solid investment to crate more meaningful and lasting jobs for a start. I'm curious about what ideas are floating around. The talk of change brings with it a positive eye forward. Better that than a sad eye backwards.
Its such a good place but the fucking council have completely changed the town centre to look like EVERY OTHER FUCKING CITY IN SCOTLAND which sucks people will go there and be like "oh looks exactly like glasgow, fort william, inverness just worse because no good shops and everyones depressed because the council ruins everything" seriously i mean i grew up there and am still there but i never even go down town anymore because its not fun anymore.
I think you highlight the real issue. Negativity. Negativity spreads it's depressing message through every aspect of Scottish Island life. Make no mistake it's the same all over the mainland but as an Islander you should be aware of where it comes from. Put it like this "they" don't come from the Island or the Scottish mainland, you know what/who I mean? They drum it in you by saying: bad weather, bad systems in place, too windy, cold or boring, they judge and try to change the place. Amen!
my grandad was born and lived in stornaway, his name was william macleod, he ended up in new zealand where he married my nana, vera jane cooper, he had 7 children and apparently none of his family in stornaway knew he had kids even though they made a couple of trips to nz, so i must have family there, all up there are about 90 odd grand kid, great grand kids in nz that our scottish relatives dont know about, hows that for a story from a sleepy little town like Stornaway
Theres a wee beach down in lower garrabost ,sit there on a summer evening and watch the sunset , theres nothing like it. The island can be very tranquil but more often gloomy and slightly claustrophobic , it just depends what kind of mood the Atlantic is in.
north and south uist are rubbish mate, just full of paramilitary guns from northern island. lewis is good, i was there for a year. there wasn't much to do. if i had to stay any longer i would have become a ravin jake. all we did was drink
stornoway is shit theres nothing to do there and the people are rude and dont go there its a waste of money cause u get ripped of and everthing i closed on sunday
and there no good shops just chuchs and newsagents
@steven24696 : well one lot has the good news and the other lot has the bad news so you get the whole spectrum ... why not explore Lewis´s unique geology ... learn how to cut rock slides or thin sections and get a polarising microscope and books on structural geology and petrology
I was so disappointed with Stornoway. I was there in the summer of 2003 and it looked really depressed. I was expecting a quaint and quintessential island capital town like Tobermory, Portree or even like Lerwick. Instead, it was run-down and there was absolutely nothing to do or see. At the time, I wished I had saved time and money and just enjoyed Ullapool which was beautiful. Having said that, I was there seven years ago so perhaps it's more pleasant now...
Stornoway is not good at all. Nothin' to do, nowhere to go. The movie theatre takes 3 months to get movies (if it was released now in February we wouldn't see it until like end of April/ beginning of May). Epic fail of an island.
@HazelAgnes48 " Pity about the wind though " Ha Ha Ha , is that not the most ironic comment on YT ? The majority of people on Lewis , Harris , Uist and Barra are not aware but that wind is there biggest asset . Think of all the crofters grafting for generations upon generations barley surviving . Think of all the emigrating . Then think of now ; Yes green energy is what I'm talking about It's a Gold mine ! Wind = £££ nowadays , think about it . Good times ahead trust me .
Was born there, moved away and go there every holidays. If you got beaten up there you can sit on your computer and complain all you like because Stornoway is more epic than wherever you live.
omg how can you all say it is a good place I'm English and was attacked by 3 supposedly men and told to get of THERE Island just because i am English. Most of the piss heads up there are English hating Hebradians who like nothing better than to wast there money from fishing going on the piss every Friday till Sunday. yup storoway is amazing i stayed in the county hotel 3 weeks ago while doing a job with the royal navy. met some amazing peope. AND I DO MISS STORNOWAY
i have very fond memories of a fantastic summer spent on lewis. my dad was born there and my brother and i spent the summer with my aunties and cousins. LOVELY. mind u that was nearly 40yrs aggo. i haven't been back since but am thinking of taking my hubby n kids next summer.

I am from Ness. Yes Stornoway is a lovely place i have 2 agree with that. But the proplem is it's 30 miles away from Ness and its a newsons 2 go there all the time. But stornoway RULES. It's the best place in the world.
It's quite strange to be in a town with !trees! when you've been camping on beaches for the past few weeks.
It was sad though because we were going back to England on the ferry early the next morning. For some reason my parents didn't let me go for a walk, so I didn't see very much. :-(
But i like Isle Of Lewis espacialy Callanish...then i came to Stornoway i bought a bike and in next day i ride the bike to Stones Circle...nice place.

You have done well with the video but it is better that that, I am married to a bernera man and we are very proud to be a part of Lewis although not living ther no more. Good nostalgia points

Sorry - doesn't get my vote. Good video, but being from Glasgow and spending 2 weeks every summer in Lewis as a kid was torture. Went back 2 years ago and very little has changed apart from a new building where the coffee pot car park used to be. Although it will always have a wee place in my heart since some of my family are from there.
yes well the song is called Miss Catherine Macleod/boys of the blue hill/donald beag by The Vatersay Boys and yes their CD's are widely available, just have a look on the ferry next time, i'm sure that they probably sell them, if not then just google it there's plenty of info on them.
