  • havent heard this song since i was like 6 years old just pulled it up...reminded me of better times...and i burst into tears.

  • Goose bumps...

  • 3 people are squares :)

  • I definitely prefer the Dropkick version. But that may just be the punk in me...

  • @jbowser09

Yes but that wouldn't exist without these guys

  • luke kelly and ronny drew r.i.p.

  • New Irish band CASTLECOMER do an AMAZING a capella version of this song.

Check them out by typing in "The Auld Triangle - Castlecomer"

  • What is a "bousy"? Sounds like a great insult. hahaha

  • it was singing with him Ciarán. perfect accompanyment to Luke's just gargled whisky and razor blades voice

  • twadn't Ciarán actually, it was Barney.

  • what three idiots disliked this ?!?!

  • Beautiful!!!! I love this version so very much. I can picture Behan sittin in his cell at the Joy composing this in his head. Sends shivers down my spine everytime i hear this song,

  • That being said, I prefer the DKM version when I'm in an energetic mood, but for situations like my great aunt's funeral where I sang this song with my relatives I prefer this version. DKM does a great job reviving these songs and giving the Irish American youth of today a taste of their old culture. You have to understand that DKM isn't trying to make this song better, it's a tribute to their heritage and an attempt to show kids that these traditional songs have existed for years.

  • Punk's heyday was not in the late 70's early 80's, the punk movement started then and has been gaining momentum ever since. If you think punk is dead than you should move to the east coast and see all the punk rockers touring across the shores playing shows on a dime and driving their shitty breaking down vans all over god's creation. Dropkick is what is called celtic punk. Their version of this song is excellent. It cannot be compared though, the dubliners are legends and traditionalists.

  • I dont like to debate on Youtube but...seriously? Everyone has their opinion (odd as it may be) but Dropkick Murphys and Luke Kelly are not to be compared! Not remotely, they dont even belong in the same sentance!

Its like comparing Justin Beiber to Bob Dylan..although if you are THAT deluded, who knows you, might just prefer the Beib.

  • I like the pogues version but this one is real nice too. Two great interpretations

  • seen them live a few weeks ago, the sang this, it was so great

  • Shivers down my spine when this was sung acapella last saturday night by the Dubliners. Harmonies were beautiful.

  • this is shit compared to Dropkick Murphys song

  • @code2ace Are you deaf as well as clueless?

  • @code2ace LMMFAO @ you. Dropkick Murphys wish they could be as legendary as the Dubliners.

  • That's the definition of harmony right there lol

  • God Bless you Mr Kelly. Pure Gypsy. Devel bless you cushty rom.

  • All of you, stop bitching about Great Britan! listen to the song. Stop wasting your time bichting; if you hate English people so much, join the IRA. Otherwise, leave it alone!

  • @JamesDestry1 Great Britans not great. Its a cunt FACT

  • 3 people are british and can poga me horn

  • They sound brill dont fancy your taste much!

  • @jamesbondk you moron if not for these "old guys fucking talking" there would not be a dropkick!

  • @sickb81 and Ronnie Drew the lead singer of these fine fellows was on dropkicks song Flannigans Ball.

  • @jamesbondk these guys changed irish music forever so stop talking crap about them get a life

  • Epic beards.

  • @Lukeypoo91 chat your mouth

  • I didn't know Brent Hinds had a side project! :O

  • this is the original. dropkick murphys are great. they do an amazing job keeping irish pride alive. im sure they heard this beautiful song growing up and wanted to put their own spin on it. i happen to like their cover. they pulled it off nicely. but once again....there is no topping the original

  • I just love these Irish traditonals - great music!

  • dropkick murphys totally makes this song looks boring.

  • @politicalanomaly dropkick murphys = plastic paddy cunts ( who wouldnt let rob kelly use their shipping up to boston sample that didnt belong to them in the first place!)

  • are you some old cunt who enjoys this boring shit, with no energy, not that it doesn't take talent, its simply....boring.

  • @politicalanomaly well then fuck off you cunt and dont disrespect irsh music

  • @mcrenren I'm the cunt? says the fag who enjoys this shit.

  • @politicalanomaly well then just go off and lissin to your head banging shit or what ever gets you going you dum fuck why did you look up the song then god some ppl are just fucking cunts on this thing

  • @mcrenren bitchy music=bitchy fans. <3

  • @politicalanomaly Well then fuck off and listen to dropkick murphys moron

  • @politicalanomaly Dropkick Murphys' version is absolute shit. Seriously, turning this song into some heavy metal guitar rubbish is insulting.

  • @moonshiny74 Are you fucking kidding me? First of all, it's punk rock, not heavy metal.

This is shit, it's accapella. Dropkick murphys version is Awesome and has more feeling to it.

  • @ApbergetGreenDay86 No, I'm not kidding. Dropkick Murphys are about as punk as Green Day, which isn't that punk, trust me. I grew up a kick punker, I know my punk and hardcore. The DM version has a metal vibe, not punk. And it sucks. Yes, this shit is acapella because...that is how it is SUPPOSED to be sung. Most every band other than DM has sung it that way. If you don't like it, don't listen to it. Listen to the DM BS.

  • @moonshiny74 I agree! if you want to see a good version of a traditional song by a punk singer, Joe Strummer did an amazing "Minstrel Boy" modern, his own way, but it was recognizable.

The DM version is just...ghastly . Gave me an effing headache too.

  • @joeygsmom I don't think I've heard it. but I'll look it up. Joe Strummer could do no wrong in my eyes, so it's bound to be fantastic. Thanks!

  • @joeygsmom You are clearly missing the key point though, Dropkick Murphys are a punk band so they are going to do a punk cover of it. Clearly incomparable to this.

It's like people who try to compare Confide's cover of Such Great Heights with The Postal Service or the Iron & Wine cover. They are all different, subject to the bands band style and influence.

I dig DKM's version but don't really like this. This isn't bad though, I just don't have the taste for traditional stuff.

  • @ohalistair fair enough. its all a matter of opinion. (just for the record, do you like Dylan or Bieber better?) lol

  • @joeygsmom I don't listen to either to be honest.

  • @ohalistair youre alright then ;-)

  • @moonshiny74 Face it, you have no idea about either punk or hardcore. I don't care what you grew up as, you have no idea. DKM have zero metal influence or sound.

  • @ohalistair says the kid who was born 20 years after punk died.

  • @moonshiny74 Good work, you have just killed your own argument.

I was absolutely unaware that punk died 6 years before the movement even started.

  • @ohalistair no. Punk's heyday was in the late 70s-early 80s. Unless you are lying about your age, punk died approximately 20 years before you came into existence. I'm done with this retarded conversation.

  • @ApbergetGreenDay86 If by feeling you mean Screaming nonsense, then you are correct.

  • @tombnelson You call that screaming? Then you should not listen to heavy death music, you would think it was the devil screaming hahah ;D

  • Pure class

  • Would interesting to hear how a version of this same song done by Justin Beiber, Miley Cyrus, Lady GaGa, Jedward and JLS would compare .........hhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • Brilliantly simple from the auld Dubs - love them.

Seen them in Liverpool so many times. Forever music, timeless sound.

  • on which cd can I find this version of the great "The Auld Triangle" ?

  • awesome song, awesome singers

  • wow..GREAT voice

  • Some folks hi. This is the song that turned kelly onto Irish folk music.

  • excellent singin voice that man had, it takes 20 pints o guiness a ady and chain pipe smokin to get a voice like that

  • @s7evieM realy?? why aint i that good then!

  • its said the reason for no instrutments in this came about when there gear was late 1 night so they done this one to keep crowd quite, and kept it like this, great,

  • Brilliant stuff outta Lukey. Just brilliant.

  • reminds me of my time in the joy its still the same today as it was back then except the triangle is gone well not gone still there but not used

  • omg i love this music

  • the man is a saint

  • Luke Kelly's voice is like honey. I have heard many of the other versions and none compare to the emotional impact that hits you in every verse in this rendition. You really do get a sense of the frustrations of being an 'ole lag'. Thanks for the post.

  • This man has the voice of a saint.

  • I absolutely LOVE Dropkick Murphy's version.

  • Hope you don't mistake the drop kick murphys for being anything near Irish.

  • Fuckin' finally someone gets it!

  • @unclemofo They're not an Irish rock band, they're a Boston rock band. And I didn't realize people who listen to Irish music would discriminate against other bands that add to the genre.

  • Comment removed

  • @unclemofo I like dkm but i dont make that mistake either lol. dkm are of irish ansestry but their not irish.

  • Actually I like The Pogues version better...

  • Jim McCann, Barney and John

  • The absolute best version bar none!!

  • this is fckin great!

  • yeah man haha. It is an amazin song to be honest. class harmonies

  • i so regret not being old enough to hear that voice in the way it should have been heard, live and flawless and forever original

  • you are old enough get the cds i seen em Live great

  • brings me to tears everytime.

  • nope

  • naa

  • Ive heard some decent versions of this but still...youre #1 Lukey, always will be.

  • Oh doesnt it rip your heart out that he's dead? Would love to have met him., his voice is so compelling. RIP darling

  • hope ronnie and luke are singing this song together in heaven. RIP two Irish legends.

  • R.I.P. to two true Irish Legends.

  • long live ronnie necer be forgotten,R.I.P

  • Ireland And the World will miss you Ronnie. You were one of the greats along with Luke. Your music will live forever.

  • R.i.P Ronnie Drew & Luke Kelly you Ledgends!!

  • ronnie drew RIP

  • Shane Macgowan does it best

  • he was the best

  • 4 real

  • Haha! Wooooooo! 8P .. whatever u say darlin! Yeeah!

  • smart ass

  • I know what a screw is. I read the book.....unlike MOST of the fucking people commenting here. SO.. gold star for me......(sarcasm)

MOST people have NO idea where this song even comes from. .....but what do u expect? Its not just americans. People all over the world seemed to stop educating themselves years ago.

BTW....4 those who dont know...thsi song was written by BRENDAN BEHAN. If u dont know who he was/is ....LOOK IT UP> IM NOT YR FUCKING TEACHER. ...he was damn brilliant.

  • I believe DKM covered this song because of their Irish heritage, to honor it. not disgrace it.

  • please see my last comment to roryMandoliin.

  • i wasnt sayin they are a disgrace to their (ugh!) heritage...(i hate that word) ....(so overrated)I was sayin they are a disgrace to Brendan Behan and its a shame that his REAL LIFE experiences have been ...NEVERMIND!!!! ....its past my time for a drink! (im serious!) good-fkn-bye people.

  • This ones good but I do like Dropkicks verison more pip in it

  • The Dropkick Murphys are a disgrace. Theyre NOT smart enough to write their own songs so they have to distroy what is real and beautiful. God bless you Luke. And Mr. Behan. xx

  • FYI, dropkick murphys have 6 albums out, maybe about 12 out of those 100 or so of their songs are covers, also, Ronnie Drew HAS collaberated with Dropkick Murphys and given them full blessing to bring Irish Music to a different, younger audience, much like the Pogues did.

    owned

  • Um......THE POINT WAS THEY EVEN WENT AS FAR AS RIPPING OFF BRENDAN FUCKING BEHAN. DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT THIS SONG IS ABOUT AND WHAT BEHAN EXPERIENCED? ANY CLUE?! IM JUST SICK TO DEATH OF THE PLASTIC PADDY GARBAGE THAT COMES FROM THIS GOD AWFUL COUNTRY OF OURS! period.

  • Yeah but just cause you dont like it, it doesnt mean it's shit man, I'm like half irish and I think it's awesome, I think some of the Irish american bands are shite, but DKM are good at what they do, they dont pass along what they do in a fake way at all.

  • I dont like it (the DKM VERSION)because its just crap. thats all. crap. and it its an INSULT to the MAN who wrote it. Im Irish and Native American. But Im not going to sing a fucking song about living on a reservation ffs. This song MEANS something to A LOT of people. Its not exactly a party song....but I wont go into that. Im wasting my time.

  • If you think the DKM version's crap it's just your opinion, and I know this song means alot to alot of people, I'm sure the writer of this song wuld be pleased to see it's being brought to a new, younger audience to hear it and understand the meaning...

  • okay....maybe...MAYBE Brendan Behan would be okay with the (wince) DKM version. The man was no idiot and he even liked the Beatles.....NOT that Im putting the Beatles on the same level with DKM. Maybe people will kind of educate themselves thru the (wince again) DKMs and whatnot. Im just a purist I guess. I get tired of commercialized crap and teenagers goin bananas over something that they really have no clue about. Some things are just over-rated. Really.

  • yeeah i know what you mean, there's a band called "the real mckenzies" that I hate because they put scottish accents on and theyre from nova scotia! even though the pipe playing's good in their music.

  • Agreed, it's very different than this and not necessarily 'pure', but that's not the point-the murphies have always been about re-intepreting traditonal songs into their own idiom

  • all versions are fantastic, the song is so good it is impossible for it to sound bad..

all ye true music lovers, try the gadflys version(my personal favourite)

  • What?

  • this is amazing!!

dropkick murphys version is a pile a shoit!

  • Luke Kelly died in 86 of cancer it was a loss to me, to irish music and to music as a whole my ideal duet would be kelly and pavarotti can you imagine it . Peace.

  • He actually died of a brian tumor not cancer ,just to let you know .he was a legend though

  • I like it. simply amazing harmonizing, what else can be said?

  • Id always say Luck Kelly/Dubliners version the best everytime.

  • I thinks Shane macgowan version is the best.. he have the gift..

  • hey gobshite hehehe xplain ur comment ur the bleedin dope ask ur ma
