Love the concept and project but doesn't this produce DC which can damage our household AC items like phones and ipods? Just wondering if you did something to deal with this, or if I am incorrect in thinking it is putting out DC current.
Why would you hot-glue the batt case down? It looks like if you glued it upwards, you could use this as a batt charger for AA's as well as a power pack. You could charge up any AA's you want, pull them out, and then leave the final set in there to use this as a power pack. I use AA's to power wireless keyboard/mouse & other devices. Was interested in sometihng I could use to solar-charge AA batts, but also use as a AA-powered (once charged via solar) power pack to charge a cellphone.
Is there a model number or serial number to track the solar charger you mention at the end of the vid? I checked Harbor Freight online and there was no listing for it. Thanks for the post.
iPhone 4 needs 5.3V to initiate charging. A "better" way is using a DC-DC converter. 6V solar panel would need 4x1.2V AAA batteries wired + to - (he used a 4 AAA battery holder project box - this has two leads Red and Black and the batteries snap in). Trouble is AAA's have about 300-700 mah, iPhone needs 1450 mah to charge to 100%. A 12v panel with Dc-Dc converter to 4 AA's and a 12V-5V transistor (shack parts) wired with 1000uf capacitor would charge N E Thing USB.
so far I have not found anything that this charger will not charge. As long as you can maintain a charge of 5.1v goin to the usb port, it will charge. I also connected the interior wires together to complete the circuit so the "smart" electronics would charge.

What about the iPod touch 4th generation? How many volts does that take? Will this charger work as is, or would I need a converter?
