  • soppy but brilliant

  • Brilliant. One of my two Christmas favourites.

  • Love this!

  • This was the very first David Essex song I ever heard...I was around 10 and me and my class performed it for a school Christmas concert. I still love it to this day. Incidentally, please cease and desist with the comments concerning his sexuality-David is NOT gay, he is married (for the third time)...but even if he WERE...who gives a crap??

  • @sharona1981 - You're right of course, does it really matter what his sexuality is? Personally, I listen to his music for his talent not whether he shares a bed with a woman or not.

I think some people on this forum are a little unconfident about their own sexuality, and try to mask it by spreading their vitriolic hate at others. Ignore them Sharona and take comfort in pleasureable music -x-

  • he is on the sex offenders register

  • @peiper1231 `which way doese the water go down your sink?? why dont you put your head in and have agood long look.

  • @redhotror after you twat!

  • @peiper1231 - that's kiddy fiddling Gary Glitter, not David Essex.

  • He asked me to sing this with him on stage about 20 years ago, and I wouldn't, how I regret it now....but sadly we can't turn back time. However, I still love this song :-)

  • absolutely fantastic..David Essex needs lots more recognition for the amount of love amongst women hew brought xxx

  • Gay? You must be joking. He has a beautiful young thing a fraction of his age. No surprise really, is it?

  • David is Straight so fuck off

  • eastenders .......what bliss....he's a god...

  • David -You have lost the twinkle where did it go??

  • You have lost the twinkle

  • love it.one of my favourite xmas songs

  • Nice !!! Thanks

  • gay or straight or inbetween a very talented man whose music is timeless unlike some of the rubbish churned out today

  • Just heard this on "Corination Street". Not bad, quite good actualy. Never heard of him until now. Needs more electric guitar in it though.

  • I love it tbh. Xx

  • why's beeing 'gay' a blame? Gay people are the same like we are. they aren't worse than we are. ... I hate it. don't call everyone you don't like 'gay' and even if they're gay! you can't blame them. gays are very nice people! <3

  • A realy wonderful song-with lovely lyrics and a great rhythm !

and I realy give a sh... ,whether the singer is gay.

Actually its somewhat sad, that there a people out there, who always try to find something bad-no matter how good a performance is....

    I wonder,how perfect they are................

  • love this song thank you

  • @1nicolafitz I'm very sorry to hear that:(

It's a beautiful song and you better believe your darling Dad can hear you singing it, he'll always be watching over you and your Mum x

  • 6 people missed Xmas in the 1980s.

  • @Isn't this a Justin Hayward/Moody Blues song? Nice but I like Justin Hayward voice on this better.

  • David Essex - A Winter's Tale what a cracker,

  • Great Song

    He is so cute

  • Very appropriate on this snowbound january winters day!

  • The Man who was the FIRST to wear an earring! Check it out!

  • @eaglebeak45 not the first , robert newton as long john silver wore a gold earring

  • @cujo9 So did lots of gypsies, and other pirates like Henry Morgan etc.. But I meant among people who are alive and current like entertainers etc.

  • Yeah, close the door David, the nights are getting cold.

Actually, you can let yourself out while you do it.

beautiful words just like his other songs :)

  • nice tune man

  • bril song that sums it up bernie xxx

  • this is my fave version, excellent stuff, check the studio version, beautiful

  • top song

  • loveing song

  • This verson isnt as good as the origional release, this is a bit out of tune....

  • This song brings back memories. I was in my school choir and we sang this at my first ever concert.

  • I'm really crazy for this ballad. David Essex has a lovely 'frosty'layer to his soothing in-key voice on this track. He's cleary a naturally VERY talanted singer! In my country he is unknown. Freddie Mercury also shares the same title but sings totally different 'A Winter's Tale'.

    bulsaralinda. Italy.

  • h looks dead in this vid

  • thats the 80's for you. lol.

  • THIS IS A LOVELY RECORD.

  • a classic song. Great great!

  • yes its a terriffic track one of his best i think!Havnt heard it for some time!!!!

  • Very classy performance!!

  • David Essex gay? Since when? Wouldn't it be better to focus the comments on the song and David's performance? By the way, in the UK it is still very popular and played a lot around Christmas time.

I love the gentleness of the lyrics enhanced by the sound of the flute and the singer's voice.

  • @gilipollas66 David was and is a lovely looking guy. But I wish he wud dye his hair a bit darker and get rid of that goatie beard as it doesnt suit him on eastenders now

  • He's not gay...he has been married twice, and he took Sinitta's virginity. Only true straight guys can do that.

  • I've met him and his mum :)

  • How did you meet his mum, and what was he and she like?

  • I've been going to his Portsmouth gigs since I was 6 years old with my mum. (I'm 15 now) And when we went round to the back door everyone would push me forward to meet him because I was small! He was so lovely when I spoke to him, he asked whether I enjoyed school and what subjects I liked... His mum was also coming out the back door after watching the show which is when she walked past me :) Lovely little old lady and she has his sparkly eyes.

  • Thanks for that! Your Mum sounds lovely for taking you with her! Best wishes to you both.

  • @gothchicken Been wishing I could meet him for the last 40 odd years!!

Where Is he now? Wow when I was 15 he was 25 (same birthday) so now he must be 64! Still like to meet him :) He was Awesome

  • Respond to this video... Love this :)

  • He sound so nice "live" too. Heard this song way back in the early 80s.

  • Hes my Uncle

    hahah =)

    [NoJoke]

  • Fab song nice video.Davis is still fab even now!!

  • billhill83, you lack class. Essex should be knighted. One of England's classiest performers from "Rock On" to present.

  • great song well sung by david essex .have herd lots of versions but this one is best well done david.

  • I saw this guy last night in panto. He was pretty good.

  • this video says it was 1989, in fact it was one of my favourite David Essex songs from about 1978/9

  • 1982 people a good year

  • Fab song and a cool dude. ;-)

  • This still the best Christmas song ever made!

  • Didn't think Essex sung this! Love this song!

  • Actually, I think it's a soprano sax, like Kenny G plays.

  • Clarinet :D

  • Hello People. I'm stupid. Please tell me the name of the instrument playing at 1:24 to

    1:38. Thank you.

  • It is a soprano saxophone - it's small size means it doesn't require the customary bend in the horn.

  • David Essex is a Top bloke!!

    Love this song too.

  • AFI s better

  • It's just the perfect Christmas song. Christmas is just not Christmas without.

  • Christmas starts in october!

  • My favorite christmas song. Thanks for that.

  • i met david in 1979 in edinburgh in the esso hotel me and my brother and sister ..he was a nice person and a gentlemen to give us his autogragh ..as he ate his lunch..he was so kind ..i hope he see's this and he remembers this.i thank him for that...i think he was on tour with silver dream racer.thanks dave.

  • I am sure this another Mike Batt song - beautiful for Christmas and all year round. Very sad, and wonderful with it! Would love to record it myself soon.. Looking forward to posting some videos. Thanks for posting this.

  • Music by Mike Batt

    Words by Tim Rice

  • I have loved this song since the day he released it...Such a sad song really....

  • I'm not really a David Essex fan but I do like this song. It's a definately aforgotten classic and rarely appears on any xmas cd's. I have a tendency to watch the music video channels and they show a range of xmas vids some of which are truely awful but this song has yet to make an appearance.

  • I wold have liked John Lennon to sing this. Its Great. Possible we can get Sparky to sing it

  • It's Christmas!

  • yeah cause the middle of november is xmas....idiot!!

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you soooo much for this video. I recorded this song in my teens (70's) and had to wait about 30 years to find it on a Xmas CD. Now I can even watch it. It feels already like Xmas today.

  • The camera-work at 2:15 is especially brilliant (did they hit someone in the audience?), and I am not even talking about the gestures. But Mr Essex has a charming smile and this video is certainly worth watching... well, I have already watched it more than a couple of times, and I am very picky :-)

  • i love this version its a pity this cant be brought :( unless this version is out, not the 82 1

  • My favourite Christmas song. Says exactly how I feel about a lost love of mine.

  • Ahh, the combo of Messrs Batt & Cook ! - a true classic - Mike Batt is a truely a fantasic song writer and Dave Cook has been a classic live artist for well over 30 years, I've spent many a evening at Mel Bushes gig's - thanks guys

  • brilliant great wikid

  • This is the first song I've put into the saver! Is that sad?

  • No its not sad

  • Lovely song, very special voice and I have his biography....very interesting

  • i have to say that this is one of the first Christmas songs that i play at the start of Christmas = ) 173 days or so to go !!!!!

  • A lovely song - Mike Batt can write songs almost as good as David Essex, and he's written some great ones for David!

  • Another of my favourites. Unmistakeable Mike Batt melody and harmonies - fabulous!

  • nice

  • Pinhead?

  • This was actually out in December 1982,kept off the number 1 spot by Keith Harris and Orville-David was robbed! lol, it was while I was awaiting the imminent birth of my second son.

  • I love this song. It almost makes me cry :)

  • Written by Mike Batt and Tim Rice. A #2 hit over the Christmas of 1982.

  • He still gets me going! Can't wait to see him live in April

  • I'm off to nottingham tonight! to the once in a life time rewind tour, can't wait to see David Essex either, love him!fan since '73
