Its scenes like this that sets NCIS so far apart and so different from all the other crime drama shows. NCIS doesn't just rely on crime scenes. Its about how a team has grown together and watch eachothers backs like family. NCIS has proven to be an awesome show without gunfights, and fancy special effects. It all revolves around Gibbs losing his wife and daughter, and that he plays the father figure of the team. This scene shows that from Gibbs.
I'm thinking they couldn't tell her because they were afraid it would hurt her. They didn't know how. Any loving parents, like Abby's, wouldn't want her to feel conflicted about her identity. (Especially if she was given up for adoption) But we know Abby will pull through this one. As Gibbs said, "Abbs, you're still the same person...you don't have to do this alone." The NCIS family will be with her. :) Scenes like this make the show so great.
Abby asks how they couldn't tell her she was adopted. Simple answer, she was their little girl whether by blood or by legal she will always be their baby. My husband was widowed & left with 2 boys to raise. The boys consider me mom. Bio mom is mommy & I'm mom. I can tell you I fell for the eldet when while sitting in a rocking chair he crawled into my lap & told me about his gi joes before putting his head on my shoulder & falling asleep. I may not of given birth to them but they will be my boys
I love this scene, one of my favorites from this season -- we've gotten a lot of great father/daughter moments with Gibbs with both Abby and Ziva (really loved the latest with her and Gibbs although I hate it she was hurt) this season and I hope they keep coming!
I may be out of line for this.. being that I have never been adopted, but I always thought that you are most influenced to be who you are, by the people that you are around. You are also influenced by the choices that you yourself make. You need to know certain things that may be passed down such as allergies and body complications.. but the blood does not always make the person who or what they are by what the "family" traits are.
Oh, and this weeks' episode was telling. Abby was not trying to help Tony, Ziva, and McGee to find Gibbs' "Perfect Woman". And didn't look so thrill with the others' trying either.
As an adoptee, I know that Pauley through her character will treat this with grace and compassion.. I pray so.. it's something that is quite personal and touching.. family is family, blood means nothing. I sense a big change in characters..and almost a sense of dread over Gibbs.. not just worry for Abby (and I wonder if he knew all along) -- but what if Abby finds another connection..is Gibbs beginning to fall in the background to the 'team' to his family.. its all good, but sad too.
@RachTrinity Even Abby.. I love the relationship between her and Gibbs the most.. I also know that is time for our Abby to drop the pig tails..the Emo look is over.. the 'aw gee shucks' is done. Abby, Tony, Tim, Ziva..do one of two things, take different paths in life.. or Gibbs takes the back seat.. Gibbs is no ones probie anymore..he is "Mike" now.. many changes afoot..many.
I don't think that Gibbs will take a "backseat", he had a chance to and didn't opt for it. Besides, with Franks, and Jenny gone. The whole team is his family. I know in the deepest parts of me he would fight and if he had to die to protect them. I even think to a certain degree that Vance is in there.. For now just to try to keep a well oiled machine working. Gibbs is not ready to get out of the action... Not yet.

Aw poor Abby, but how lovely and sweet is that scene? It's so cute when he hugs her, they totally are like a father and daughter

When I watch scenes like this, I forget for a few minutes that the characters in NCIS aren't real.
