but compared to business of course the pay is laughable, and now his bright idea to increase "productivity" is to remove tenure, give university presidents-appointed at his grace-dictatorial powers, and having the constant stress of every 6 months being "evaluated" by a system of cheked-off boxes with the sheer numbers of papers!!!! Many I have spoken to say they will leave if at all they can.... they view this as the death knell of French academic system, if Sarkozy has his obstinate way.

I have talked with many French colleagues and the situation is

far worse than indicated by Sarkozy's speech. What one can easily see however is his supreme arrogance. He has no research background at all and seems to assume researchers are lazy and wasting their time; it is therefore his holy misssion to "reform" the system. Of course this means treating research like a multinational corporation...

well i must say this is a sad way to face a problem but to run away... If everybody did so, well they'd be no more research in France.

I also have had many job offers abroad to continue on my research topics, but I rather stay here and shake the bottle, so that eventually something happens one day.

well, it is presicely because he is making changes that I am considering coming back. I didn't want to waste my time trying to change the way things were in france since it seemed to suit so many researchers. I went abroad for my studies which I think are better where I am. I saw that more as being an opportunity to open my mind to new things than running away ^^ I didn't see the point in going through a system that didn't suit me. I feel more confident now that I am about to come back.

i get your point in doing your 'studies' abroad, cause that's also what i did for the same reasons for my Ph.D. I was more referring to actual research positions, for which I came back right after my studies...

Why would I stay when i think education here is bad? I would have thought going to a country I didn't speak the language, do my last 2 years of school in one, and going to university there (btw, where I went, university is free) isn't quite being a coward lol I don't see anything bad about going somewhere else because it suits me better.

I can criticise because I lived in france for 14 yrs, I'm not supporting people who complain about him coz I agree with what he says! what really bothers you?
