When gen y talks about wanting cool bosses , and fun friendly work environments , they often are mystified by the reactions and decisions that are made on behalf of thier work performances . They often have the" why are they treating me like that" attitude while it's business as usual
My perspective comes from someone who spent 6 months trying to find a job after getting a BBA.
-Most of us are willing to learn, and we look to our first job as an opportunity to do so.
-We do like to see "what's next" because many of us want to move forward in life and have student debts to pay
-We like friendly work environments. They don't have to be be super casual etc. but being able to have a friendly rapport with you managers and coworkers is nice
@gamerfromcanada 'Entitled asses' you say. She just says 'entitled'. The word has come to have a very bad meaning to people, but in reality it just means that you expect to at least have some guaranteed rights. Generations of the previous generation generally didn't have that. They put up with shit we don't have to put up with any more just to get a job. So it's not a bad word, in this case.
Why are people complaining about the label "Millennial." Personally, I love it! I find it very appropriate to the fast-paced age that we're living in.
Where are the facts ? I mean, this kind of stuff can be easily refuted .... every generation criticize the following ones as lazy and decadent since the dawn of time.
@rayads786 I think that Generation Y (Millennials) range from as early as 1980 to as late as the mid-90s. I've even read that it stretches farther to 2000.
Maybe us millennial's should start calling the baby boomers a bunch of bitching, greedy, procreating, complacent corporate work zombies.
Sorry for having a different view of the world and how life should be rather than how life is. Once we are older Im sure we'll be saying the same things for the up and coming generations. It's inevitable....
@nett103 I prefer to call them "sell outs", "hacks", "entitled yuppies", and "free ride seekers" in addition to some things that aren't G-rated. I'm glad we get to reap the benefits of all of that pot smoking hippie idealism.
If the deficit when you started your career was less than 1% of what it is now, if you will receive more in social security and medicare than the next generation, if your pension metastasized as the government dumped borrowed money into the private sector, if your generation legislated America into a plutocracy, and if you only started bitching after you made your wealth...
You need to stop calling yourselves the 'greatest generation'. You had it easy and had every advantage at our expense
I hate things like this that tend to tar a generation with the same brush. I fall into this generation, and this doesn't describe me at all. I am on the opposite end of the spectrum, i don't have any confidence in my own ability, and struggle as a result.
Devon Scheer needs to stop talking in that condescending voice. Could not view the whole video. Listen I am a millennial and I agree we are lazier and more entitled. We do not work a 8-5 and go this job is great $12/hr with no chance of moving up. You make about the same on unemployment so mind as well go on that. We need a immediate plan for financial success otherwise we leave. We don't work hard, but are equally as productive as old generations although we focus on a social life at work
I'm not really sure where these people are getting this "entitlement" stuff from. Sure, I know people who feel they should get out of high school and make $15 an hour for doing bullshit. But I also know plenty of people (including myself) who will take ANYTHING at this point. Maybe the reason we think we should be paid more is because we just spent 40 grand on an education. We're also expected to pay $1000 or more on rent every month.
@KaliDemiDarkness Even my grandfather, who graduated from college in the 40s, thinks that we should at LEAST earn what we spent in college. I remember him telling me that when he went to school, it was $10 per credit which came around roughly $1500 by the time you were done. His first job as an engineer paid $2500, which, at that time was considered good money. He feels our generation got screwed over as far as tuition is concerned.
"Argh, so many new people. I wish they were easier to fool. I know, I'll give them a highly stereotyping name: the Millenials. That'll show them to compens... erm, respect their elders."
i feel like they're using 'The Millennials" as if they were referring to a pack of robots O.O What does our generation have to do with the new millennium anyways..
I'm sick of people who dabble in something like technology and pretends they are an expert or skilled person. You can use an iPhone? BFD! Anyone with an IQ above 60 and some time on their hands can learn to do that.
And once again, "Gen X" is invisible. Guess what- we grew up with technology, too. We're comfortable with it and we don't need Millennials explaining it to us. I'm still drowning in student loan debt I can't pay. But of course, the only generations are apparently Boomers and Milennials. I should be used to it by now but damn it, I'm still sick of it!
@jenisedai Without Gen X, the 90s as it was would not have been possible. I'll take this time to show my appreciation and to say "I love you Gen-Xers"
Funny how she danced around the obvious sense of entitlement a lot of the "Millenials" have by saying they are "more confident and expect more" until Anna brought it up herself.
It has to be a generalization that "Millennials" are better with technology. My dad is 50 and is way ahead of me when it comes to technology. This stuff isn't that hard for older people to learn.
I agree. I dealt with periods of unemployment and I would have done anything for a relevant, minimum wage job but I could not find anything for a long time due to the perception this lady pushes that young people are cocky pricks who want a lot of pay and perks and special treatment.
I don't particularly like being called a millennial. Where did this name suddenly spring from anyway? I guess it's a once in a 1000 years opportunity, and it is better than baby-boomer, x, y, or z, but it just rubs me the wrong way. Make the old folks stop, it's just uncool.
Great report. Man...I hope American employers are paying attention to this shit because I see an issue here where business want to lowball every new employee on things that millennials want partially because of the offshoring thing (why pay the American minimum wage when the guy overseas will do it for a bag of chips). Maybe this group will be the agent that causes American earning potential to be higher again. Not enough jobs yet at the moment to see this.
While what the woman says can very well be true, she's only focused on the positives about the millennials and not the negatives, of which there are many. They also are a selfish, narcissistic and clueless lot. Sure, not every single one in that generation is like that, but I've encountered enough of them to see that. They can also be socially awkward and rude. I've seen that as well. So many of them act like everyone else has to put up with their narcissism and rudeness. Well, we don't.
It seems as if the fact that this generation says 'things suck and we can make them better' is somehow taken as entitlement by older generations. It's apparently 'mature' to give in to authority and submit to foolish nonsense in the name of growing up.
I know that there are certain patterns that occur in each generation, but can we stop with all these over generalizations, and I really don't care how we act in the work place, because I doubt half of us can even get a job.
@MeltdKitKat I totally agree with you here, these generalizations borders on agism. I'd rather be dealt with as an individual, not as a race, class or generation.
I used to work as Tech Support for a small manufacturing company. Then I had a problem I couldn't solve, I simply posted it on a Tech Support forum. Now, I could have spend countless hours scouring books for the answer, but I have a pool of experts available to me, why shouldn't I tap them. I can usually get the right answer or a range of potential solution in a very short time. I have this resource, why shouldn't I use it?
I'm far from a Millenial, but I still think like one to some extent.
