but soccer took off at unprecedented speed and has never looked back, so it claimed the main use of football... american football is close enough to rugby that it claimed the name due to its popularity over soccer... Same use of words in both instances, just different outcomes

Can't wait to see Zakuani back. With my MLS team being the Sounders and the team I have supported for ever being Arsenal, I see this way to often. Players that make these challenges should be banned until the player they hurt returns to football.

nice. I was always a fans of scouting and of course attacking style football so I had been waiting for ever to have an MLS team that I would relate to and as soon as Sounders signed Fredy Montero who I had known for a few years from the colombian league and Osvaldo Alonso who I saw playing for Charleston Battery, I was hooked. Plus Drew Carey was an owner who I was a fan of lol.

I don't know how much credence you give to Wikipedia, but I like to send people to the link to the etymology of the word Soccer on wikipedia, where it says that the word "Soccer" originated in England as an abbreviation... Food for thought to those who accuse Americans of a nonsensical term. Not to mention, they never criticize other languages for their calque-ing of the word "football" (a la "futbol" "futebol"), which makes no actual sense in the native tongue. @ADAJ3
