It's possible, i mean they also said we that man can't fly. Yet here we are, maybe not in our timeline or in 100 or 200 years, but it's definitely possible.
@powerone1 have you seen the size of what their prototypes? They are 44 mm diameter cylinders. I haven't calculated, but i'm positive that silicon-based processors could never achieve this. So first step is to make something better which would probably be quantum computers. I estimate that will be no less than in 40 years. And then there would have to be some technology for communication between those catoms. That is extremely complicated to achieve. Also how do you plan powering them?
@guyboy625...i would suggest that you look into memristor technology...all this stuff is in the research and development stage...the things that you are talking about are proof a concept devices. there are so many technology that are being developed in research in labs all over the world right now that will facilitate this technology. even if it will take longer than 40 years to accomplish, that is a relatively short period of time, this is the starting point.
@guyboy625 Probably a huge cpu that commands the little small catoms what to do and also power them by sending something inside it's box or something.
The only advantage over 3D graphics is that this is physical and you can touch it, which I like very much. It's good to see that technology is coming out of the closet but I don't think 10M cpus on "atoms" 1mm in diameter is going to be something that the public could afford. Also, I can't see much use for the technology beyond things like design which already do fine with clay.
if i was there i'd throw something really hard at the douchebags raising their voices, seriously im interested in what hes saying and as he talks i can hear them get louder and louder
but i bet the future of 3D visuals will be something more like "augmented reality". light particles. not nanotech or magnetic particles. unless you can pay for it of course.
Incredible. If they manage to do this. Looking forward for more hardware demos. Would be cool if they had already a dozen of such spheres that could interact with each other. And why spheres and not something that has flat faces and can form solid geometry without gaps like dodecahedron?
there's no way they'll be able to use this as a proper technology unless they use nano-machines. and we don't have those yet...by a long shot. these guys are just wasting their time.
No, they're not. How do you come to think that it would need nano-machines?
Besides, they already estimate that it will probably need 20 years until it can be done as they envisioned. Nevertheless you can already get stuff patented on these things today (which is equal to money in the future).
machines smaller than 1mm containing enough stuff to power and run electronic magnets AND the computerparts needed to integrate it with millions of it's kin?
they're going to need nano-sized gear to fit all of into a 1mm shell. and if they're just "envisioning" it then why not envision the nanomachines instead and patent them? x.x would make lots more money in the future then.
Power would be supplied via the connection as far as I understood the technique. Besides, you don't need nano machines to create microchips. And maybe these things would be produced the very same way (at least I guess that they would want to have it that way, since it's the cheapest approach). You can create 3D structures using lithography - so maybe this idea is not absurd. Slicing a waver into correct sizes and refitting it with missing parts - not needing nano machines either.
you don't understand the size constraint or any aspects of nano-technology. 1mm is gigantic in nano scale. What their doing may use a little bit of nano-tech quantum when it comes to their processors but to think the would even need nano machines is completely wild. maybe micron-machines but not milli-micron machines (which is what was nano before nano) learn up rather that watching sci-fi movies this is definitely possible in the next few decades.
I agree that we would probably need to be able to scale down the individual pieces to nanoscale sizes, but these guys are in no way wasting their time. They are laying the groundwork for how these systems would work for when the technology to make them becames available.
no this could get into everyones hands, it can be used for cellphones that can grow full sized keyboards it could replace televisions and computers. dont be so small minded
"used for cellphones" whaow so "wide minded". Don't you say "narrow minded in england to say what you wanted to say? Of course it could be funny but I was citicizing the waste of intelligence for the stupid motivations of some, and actually only because "well, they pay". So sad.
With Nano scale engineering, the exponential rate of computing power and world needs I don't see a reason why this won't happen.

by "we" i mean that it will go to public use
"we" being the future users
meaning that it will probably be finished in 3 years

Nice but I think the main issue here is that these particles cannot fly. So only objects being connected can be created.

they want them to be spheres so they can easily move around each other. with spheres they can role into place and no edges to stop them from moving.
