I love this flick; a great parody of Hitchcock, but at the same time, a great Hitchcockian suspenser, and the dialogue between Grant and Hepburn sparkles like the best champagne. Look for the Criterion DVD if you can; due to a technical oversight, "Charade" is public domain and there are tons of crap versions out there. (They forgot to include a copyright statement in the closing credits, and that technically made it public domain.)
A MASTERPIECE. Mancini's music, Maurice Binder's Main Titles, Grant, Hepburn, Matthau, Coburn at their best. Crisp, intelligent, suspenseful script & direction. A CLASSIC. This has been (along with Sidney Pollock's *Three Days of the Condor*) rightly called one of the best Hitchcock film's ever made which was not directed by Hitch. It is obviously Stanley Donan's *homage* to Hitch, as well as a stylish addition to the genre in its own right!!
I love this movie. I first saw this in Feb 2010 and I enjoyed watching it. Best Audrey Hepburn and Henry Mancini movie I've seen since Breakfast at Tiffany's. Though my number 1 favorite Hepburn will always be My Fair Lady.
ughhhh!!!! isn't there some audrey hepburn movie where there are some sort of colorful cartoonish birds in the opening title?!! it's one of those things that i remember from my childhood and i thought this was the movie.... man... they looked like peacocks. if you have any idea of what this might be PLEASE tell me! this will haunt me occasionally until my DEATH.
ughhhh!!!! isn't there some audrey hepburn movie where there are some sort of colorful cartoonish birds in the opening title?!! it's one of those things that i remember from my childhood and i thought this was the movie.... man... they looked like peacocks. if you have any idea of what this might be PLEASE tell me! this will haunt me occasionally until my DEATH.
By the way, the movie "Charade" is in the public domain. It was in that weird span in the 1960s when you had to actively renew copyrights for individual works or lose the copyright to that work, and this one fell through the cracks.
Boy, sometimes it's difficult to ascertain if the title was Maurice Binder, or Saul Bass? However, Binder usually did James Bond, and more British films. GREAT ONE! Thanks. 10+ stars!
The only film Alfred Hitchcock would like to have directed himself (but didn't)! Master's every basic element and obsession is here: characters are not what they appear to be, and the more A.Hepburne falls in love with C.Grant, the more suspitious she becomes: lust and suspence are escalating simultaneously! Plot, suspense, performances (all of them!), rythm & cinematography, humour & dialogues, Manchini's music & Binder's credits -in one word: a masterpiece!
I couldn't agree more: There are, however, lamentably, several skips or glitches in this upload. Tsk tsk! This was, however, Donen's *de facto* *homage* to Hitchcock. The same can be said, btw, of the late great Sydney Pollack's 1975 **Three Days of the Condor**. These are among the most "Hitchcockian" movies that Hitchcock himself didn't direct (another example would be Brian De Palma's early work, especially *Obsession*).
Although many directors were influenced by Hitch (or even obsessed with his work! - like early DePalma), "Charade" is one of the few cases where the "influance" resulted in something comperable to A.H.'s work. In most cases (even in frame-by-frame copycats), results vary from indifferent to lousy...
Yet again I concur completely: There r only 3 gem-films that r obviously, & deliciously, "Hitch-ian" that r, at least more-or-less, worthy of him, & that he himself would've no-doubt enjoyed directing (but whose actual directors did a superb job w/o merely "aping" Hitch): Donen's *Charade*, Pollack's *Condor*, and last but not least Jonathan Demme's underappreciated *Last Embrace*, with the lamentably late Roy Scheider & Janet Margolin. The latter even has a Miklos Rosza score!!
And, Jimmy, I also want to thank you, as also myself a Maurice Binder (&, of course, also Saul Bass) fan, for mentioning Binder's work here. Bass and Binder more-or-less by themselves, re-invented how opening-title-sequences could "work" in and for a movie. Their resepctive work in the mid-'50's to late '60's (and beyond) set the standard(s) for creative, innovative "Opening Titles"...Bravo to them both! R.I.P.
At 1:20, you can barely see it, but the copyright notice is incomplete. It says "MCMLXIII BY UNIVERSAL PICTURES COMPANY,INC. and STANLEY DONEN FILMS, INC. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED", without the word "COPYRIGHT" or the copyright symbol as was required by pre-1989 law. Because of this, the feature has lapsed into the public domain. (Big whoops!)
Not to dismiss the fascinating subject of Grant's sexual preferences, but I'd just like to say that I like the theme tune more than the movie in this case. What's wrong with the movie? The villains (Matthau, Coburn, et. al.) are a hell of a lot more interesting than Grant and Hepburn, and the villains fall without much trouble, giving an enervating quality to the whole enterprise. All that's left is scenery, Audrey Hepburn's annoying coquettishness, and some pretty awful back projection.
this is one thriller!! the only movie HITCHCOCK regretted not to have made..so they say...wonderful music.. a cast literally to die for..a plot with so many twists and..well, we'll always have paris, kids!!!ps: who cares if cary and randolph were lovers and lived together. it did not interfere with the movie! cary was a happy bisexual who fell for the most voluptuous woman in the world: sophia loren!!but she had already made her choice and said 'no'!how many women would refuse cary? sophia did!
I should also mention that this is probably not taken from the criterion film as the music is broken up here..and of course, I imagine the video along with it, although harder to spot. The criterion version is stunning.
@sclogse1 Have not seen the Criterion DVD of this, but I am sure it is better than the $5 version I snatched up on the internet. Horrible gaps in its opening titles and even the film, and the color was terrible. You get what you pay for.
@ttlms $5 is a perfectly reasonable price for a DVD in decent quality. If I pay $5 and get a crap copy, I don't get what I pay for. I'm being ripped off.
The most thrilling titles I've ever seen, when that beat starts with those swirling arrows, well, it's one of my most favorite highs in movies. I want that beat to go on and on. Later, in the subway, it comes back, fatter, and it's too bad they never put that section on the soundtrack. But now it's here, and it's great. Thank you!
I have to disagree with you. I've watched a number of TV biographies about him and that topic always comes up. It's never been proven that Cary Grant did anything more than share an apartment with Randolph Scott back in his early days, back in the late 30's and early 40's. After that he never had any close associations with any man, but quite a few women instead.
Years ago, I shared a house with some straight AND gay friends while in college.....so would that possibly make all of us gay then? If Grant was gay, that's fine with me....this whole notion of people freaking out about someone's sexual orientation is such a joke!
This was a really good movie and this song rocks. Kind of like a James Bond song, but different in its own way. 60's movie music was awesome because back then they really composed music especially for pop films. They do today, but not as much as they did then even for pop movies like this.
I remember my mom sat me in front of this movie when I was like 10 or so. It's a movie that really sticks in your mind, the plot twists, the music, the colorful title sequence and esspecially Hepburns eyes, when she blinks it's like a butterfly flickering it's wings. even without the nastalgic factor it's a great movie
I too saw it at age 10, at Radio City Music Hall here in NY! It had some scary scenes (for a kid), and some dandy plot twists. I wont ruin it for you by giving it all away. Get the DVD or have someone give it to you for a present. It's that good. A Classic.
Mancini's music endures because he was original and there was mistaking his style. It was first evident to mass audiences with the TV series "Mr. Lucky" and "Peter Gunn". His was an unmistakable style.
fabulous, stupendous music...May Lord rest Mancini*s soul in peace listening to his ENTIRE music...The world is poorer without Mancini,Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn...
