The thing is, is that Bea has strangled to death someone before, and that was her late husband's lover, who was her friend and I think was Bea's business partner/co-worker. You hear about these little bits of info in the early days as well as a flashback (in the 200's era) of her strangling her ex-friend around the time when Bea lost her memory.
I think Bea thought Joan was dead so that is why she left the chair leg behind.

Val Lehman was on Top form in this episode.The best, she can display every emotion a good actor is trained for. Theatre trained you see. I have seen her in Misery and Driving Miss Daisy.

I do think Maggie K is a great actress. However, I am incredulous that you should think that this is the show's best acting on display here! It is high camp melodrama, with a very large pinch of tongue in cheek!
I don't find any of it panto. The Freak is chilling, especially in these last few episodes. Maggie Kirkpatrick is a splendid actress. She made The Freak a TV icon.
I wish more of the actors in this show were as good as Maggie.
I don't deny that she is a splendid actress and icon. However, I don't think that every scene that she ever did was as top notch as some of you hardened Maggie fans are protesting. Those faces that she was pulling in that scene were truly panto!
