The 1st shot, he could legitimately wondered if he had a bad round. The 2nd shot in roughly the same place would have told him it was another problem (scope or rifle). But there is no way he could have judged accurately how far he was off at that distance.

So aim to the right? How much? If this were combat, sure, take the shot. In hunting, that would be a shot with a high risk of wounding. Not a shot to take.

@SuperEcho777 I understand what you are saying, and agree that it certainly looks that way. I personally wouldn't have taken that risk once I realized something was wrong (rifle not shooting where I zero'd it in the absence of a gale force wind).

Of course I grew up hunting out to 100 yards with iron sights, so if 2 shots had been off with the scope, I would have used my sights. If the 3rd shot was similarly off, then the barrel is bent, and time to retire that rifle until it can be repaired.

@USSBN734 I hunted with the BRNO 30 06 with various weights and so on the P14 .303 iron sights. Both been super accurate because I never used factory ammo but reload my own ammo. The P14 was in original stock, nothing changed and had the iron peep sights. I had the original sniper scope and mounts for it but never used it because it was calibrated for FMJ ammo.... Wish I could have that rifle here in the UK....

Again, I support his decision not to take the shot, because of the uncertainty of the impact. Too great a probability of wounding, and that doesn't fit my personal ethics for hunting.

Now if I were starving, or in combat, obviously the answers change.

If the hunter would argue about the penalty and become cocky, he would have pay the highest price for the animal available on the farm....

This prevents shooters using FMJ ammo that wound an animal even in the heart long area where as soft point will terminate it humanly quickly.

It's alot harder to shoot a living animal then you guys think, you're fighting yourself to keep your breathing right and he wasn't breathing at all, you're also fighting the jitters of the adrenaline rush. Theres many reasons why he could've missed, mostly because he didn't sight the rifle properly, he pulled the trigger instead of squeezing, he's all tensed up, he didn't breathe out on the shots, and most importantly he didn't keep calm and he let his adrenaline take over and yes I have a kill
