One of my most very favorite of singers/songwriters/people...just not my favorite of songs from her vast songbook, but this is certainly a favorite version for me! Thank you for posting it!

i'd say this is a nicer version. i just so love how she present the song with her every performance. And I'd say, I really learned the truth at 17. =)
we were ALL so much more beautiful than our wildest imaginations...yet, in comparison to the ideal, we mostly all felt that we fell short...so, those who had the "perfect lives" where are they? Did they bother to defend our nation? Did they finish college? Save a life? Rear a family? Who knows...but, who cares...because at 17 the world is black and white...and sometimes more black than white where our spirits are concerned...we are STILL beautiful, no matter our age or accomplishments...
wonderful... I loved this song as a child and I still love it today. Janis you are an angel... I play guitar and it thrills me to plat along with you.. My Best to you my dear.
I just heard Janis on the radio this past Saturday 6 13 09 with Mark Simone on his oldie show on WABC in New York. He did an interview which was really good. I saw her last November and I think she is such a great person, songwriter and singer. Bless her!
Wonderful version! Thanks for posting. This must be one of the most touching songs ever written, on the side of Love is Blind, Society's Child, and so on and so on!
I had been practicing this song a lot on my Martin D18 until I fell and broke my arm so I'm healing right now but I'll get back to it as soon as it is better. I love this song so much. Janis is a great peron and talent. A tremendous guitar player also. :)
I saw and met Janis in Chatham last night and she was great and she is such a sweet person just like I knew she would be. It was a great show too. A true talent of course. :)
I'm also trying to learn this song on my guitar and with this video you can see what a great player Janis is. She makes it look easy but believe me it is not. I play also with my Martin D18 and have looked at her other clips of this and would like to get it half as good as how she plays it. What a great song!!!
Janis is such a treasure and this is such a great song among many she has written. I'm reading her book "Society's Child" now and it is great and gives an insight to the business side of record making. She went through a lot and she was just a kid at the time. I'm going to see her in Novemeber and look forward to it.
OK, I just watched 'em all and this is the best version on YouTube.
Not only inspired composition and heart-rending sentiment but so powerfully delivered through some of the best lyrics ever writ by anybody. It isn't done any better than this.
her introductions to this tune are always so understated as if out of deference for the visceral effect of the lyrics - she then proceeds to kill ( in a positive sense of revealing wounds so they may be healed ) many softly with her words
I'm a man who was around 17 when this song came out and it really struck a cord with me. I've always loved it and this is the best rendition of it I've seen. Thanks Kenn.
Janis Ian is a very down to earth and humble woman who hasn't had an easy life. Janis if you happen to read this, I hope you are well and wish you all the best.
As I get older I find a tear in my eye from time to time when listening to really beautiful songs:-) and I'm a man.....but I guess we're all entitled to enjoying something so privately wonderful .

I will never understand. I think you are truly beautiful. Both outside, and inside. P.S. I've always liked curly dark hair.

"At Seventeen", and "That's The Way I've Always It Should Be", I think, are the two most provocative songs ever written.

One dislike. Hmmmm....go figure...can't please everyone. I just don't know what's not to like. I'm 66, male, and think this song was/is pure genius.

This is certainly a classic song. It speaks to our real and imagined inadequacies; something we can all relate to.
