WHY IS DB II NOT A HOUSEHOLD NAME ? ? WHY DOESN'T HE FILL STADIUMS LIKE LADY GAGA, DOES, FOR CHRIST'S SAKE?? He doesn't need flashing lights, ridiculous costumes, a contingent of male stripper dancers, to cover for mediocre musical talent, like so many "musical artists" currently do. DB II is a gifted blues-rock guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer. It kills me that he plays back-up guitar for the likes of Sheryl Crow, or is showcased once every 3 years at Clapton's Crossroads Festival.: (
@jammyjoyful come out to Texas broski. I see him alot in ATX. But now that he's with Sheryl he's been doing a lot more studio work. so i have been seeing him less an less.
It's not like Clapton has anything to proof. I think at this point he's really more about promoting the whole world of blues music than he is about being a self-absorbed artist which is great since most people never develop that level of maturity or even spirituality, some might call it, about the things they love.
Woah - I wasn't too fazed at the beginning but he soon lit that shit up! All in the bends and phrasing. You don't need fast fingers to get this stuff right. Sweet notes at the end.
this guy is so damn lucky to be able to play with clapton. I can play as good as him and you dont see me going all over the world with eric clapton and derek trucks...lucky bastard
Hahahaha! If you can't hear Doyle's mastery then you're listening for something else in the blues than I am (and Clapton and SRV don't seem to have a problem with his playing...) Have a think about how simple this solo is, and yet how intense it gets; Doyle's gut-wrenching tone and sense of space is totally humbling. The guts and soul it takes to play this simply and powerfully is beyond 'playing good'
wow dude.....that's one of the most arrogant things i've ever heard......the thing is....the people who really are as good as the pros don't post how they are on youtube........typical phase in the advancing guitarist where they think they are the best.....your next phase, hoping you still advance, will be a harsh realization that you're not.....
That was a great solo.djteleboy,I dont agree that Doyle's playing is weak or sloppy.Bonamassa is all about technique rather than feel,John Mayer is not quite the finished article on guitar, but Doyle plays with real soul. And as for your comments on EC,well, your just plain wrong. The guy's a recognised genius. He has more feeling in one bent note than most people ever have in a lifetime of playing. Also check out Edith Funker on myspace,Doyle plays amazing solos on both those tunes.
disagree about bonamassa, he has the magic combo of technique and feel. Saw him live earlier this year and i can say he is the greatest guitar player i have ever seen. There are far better songwriters out there ie mayer, but for me Bonamassa is the best guitar player in the world at the moment, and i dont say that lightly.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
bonamassa is light years ahead of this guy. he's as good as most of the guys i play in the local bar seen.the 64 strat sounds good but he dont move me.. it is cool the way he strings the guitar.
you're flat out wrong... DBII is unparalleled, plus his tones are way sweeter than Bonamassa. Bonamassa has a little of the 'guitar-teacher' about him, if you know what I mean....
I think Joe is fantastic but you really can't compare them to each other. They are like night and day. BUT, I think that DBII has a more "authentic" Blues sound and feel. Joe sounds like he listens to way too much Eric Johnson. Joe has great technique, but it just doesn't have the same feeling as Doyle.
dolyle is probably a great guy, but his playing is weak and sloppy. in the crossroads dvd he does'nt belong on the same stage as trucks.bonamasa has triple the talent he has. sorry
the truth is clapton is not a super gifted player, he got the whole package.BUT as a player its weak he plays the same boring lines over and over. he thinks when he plays he does'nt feel what he plays. he was great at the cream reunion. as younger players go, im just taking about raw talent! joe bonamasa is king.check out some of his utube riffing video's . joe can play eveything and anything!doyle is not in same league. sorry
I know Joe well, he was part of my friedns production company and he is a fine musican....but there is a reason may people havent heard of him...they are all gifted, but not for nothing as young guitar players go John Mayer has them all and the whole package
john has what we call the whole package! playing song writing etc.. but bonamasa wiil mop the floors with john;s playing. great country licks great slide and dobro, off the hook guitar talent. his singing and song writing needs work..im just takin raw guitar...
These players are all great Doyle, Clapton, Bonamasa, don't forget, Robert Randolph,D. Trucks, BUT YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE BEST LIVING BLUES PLAYER ALIVE?? BUDDY GUY!!!! anyone on here who hasn't seen Buddy needs to go see him and learn something!
there's eric just shaking his head at the end. consumate musicians and true professionals really don't give a shit about who's better, they just wanna play. they let hacks like us get in to pissing contests over them.
great video. would have been good to see a bit of back and forth, though.
The one and only true heir to the throne of the late, great Stevie Ray Vaughan. Doyle II is simply one of the best artists out there. But I think he could care less about having that title. He is one of a kind just like Stevie was...Great vocalist, great writer and he plays one helluva mean guitar!!!
I saw Doyle on this tour and had previously never heard of him. I walked away a fan,and quite frankly found it more memorable than Eric Clapton's performance believe it or not
I met Doyle in San Diego at a music store. He let me play his 63 strat great guy, great muscian. He was checking out some old pro reverbs. I told him I was from Buffalo and he must have thought I fell off the turnip truck.
well i was born here in austin,,, and if ya wanna see some man-handlin' of a strat,,, till it makes ya wanna go home and break all yours,,, well this is a good place to start,,, go get'em doyle II. you iz a badass fer sure. - madmex
I suppose you'd call Peter Green a shredder by that maxim...
'noodling' to me is aimless, meandering playing, or at worst playing too many notes in a kind of passionless, detached way. Now, I don't find even a HINT of that in Doyle's playing here, in fact the total opposite! His final chorus is so simple and so moving. Passionate and emotional, this is so far from noodling
I always thought it was a shame baby Doyle didnt make himself a career of playing blues. He can certainly play it, you people saying he can't are just ridiculous. But the stuff hes released on his own is pop, or summat.
But he can play. You can have grown up with who he grew up with and not know what its supposed to sound like.
It would be a little out of place at one of my concerts - but then I'm a purist when it comes to my own gigs. ;) But not out of place as a guest soloist, like he is when he tours with Clapton. And surely never out of place in a rock concert, as there is quite a bit of blues-rock in that solo.
