  • Thank you so much, My banjo has been string less for almost a year now. I remember watching your vids when i first got my banjo, Seriously helped alot. Only thing is i might have strung it wrong...hopefuily not.

  • The best I've seen!! Good description and clarity, THANK YOU for the info

  • Thanks buddy!! I just bought an older vintage banjo that can use a little work, so this video was just what I needed.

  • how do you change the action string hight ?????

  • Is setting up a 6 string the same as a 5 string bajo.

  • great video, loved the playing as well.....I am a guitarist / keyboardist but I love the banjo, it instantly puts a smile on any faces, and it gives you goosebumps as well

  • Great information. Thanks for sharing! You got a great musical sense of humor. Do you play dobro also?

  • will a tree of life inlay for guitar fit on banjo

  • Wonderful video, excellent, five star commentary, lucid explanations, and fantastic environment. Made me feel like I can work on a banjo. Not many folks can do that, and you are one nice, encouraging fellow. Thank you for this vid!

  • That was awful helpful, Mr. Costello. Much obliged.

  • Awesome work Dobro33h

    Great video. :)

    Much love Kat

  • Very nice of you to post this. My brother is passing me an old family banjo that's been collecting dust, in a bad way not a good one. Actually he got a better one and I hope anyway I can keep this one. Okay, it's not the greatest. It's a Norma brand. Might clean up nice anyway. I do appreciate your instruction. Gotta' love Youtube!

  • This was a tremendous help, for a guy who hasn't bought one yet.............thanks.

  • I've just bought my first banjo and this video has given me great confidence - superb.

  • Re-stringing starts at 18:51

  • Hey Patrick, thanks heaps for that. Am a guitar fan but have just purchased a banjo down here in New Zealand. I just love my banjo but can see now it needs proper setting up. I now know how to do that. Many thanks again, Pete.

  • I play guitar but recently got a used Samick banjo. This vid was great to get me started. I see the Maryland flag behind you. I'm from MD too. I'll make sure to try and find your shop sometime.

  • Very informative. Thanks Patrick. I play guitar but just recently got hold of a used Samick banjo and this video really helped me understand how to set it up. I noticed the Maryland flag behind you. I'm from MD too. I'll have to find your shop.

  • Excellent, thank you.

  • when do you need to change the head?

  • Patrick

    GREAT lesson!!!

I have a question though. When I go to a web site that sells new banjo heads, they have a HIGH CROWN, MEDIUM CROWN and LOW CROWN.

How does one know which type of crown to use?

Before I saw this video, I was afraid to change the head on my banjo, but you make it look SO common sense! Thanks.

  • Thanks Patrick! I just really improved the sound of a MM Rocky Top used banjo this week with the information you provided here.

  • I always tighten the head in a star pattern..

  • legend. that was so useful

  • Any advice on Dowel Sticks on banjos, How to adjust them. also what about Gold Tone CC 50 banjos, I've see these for $ 225.00. thank You for your advice.

  • Ah such an informative video, thank you very much!

  • Patrick thanks this vid helped a lot, only the tail peice thats on my banjo is a Kershnar it was a bit of a job getting the strings through the holes!. Thanks from the Isle of Arran scotland

  • Patrick thanks for this video you and your Dad are the best.

  • I really enjoyed watching your video, very informative and you certainly get the message across that there is nothing to worry about if we follow your excellent instructions.

Also enjoyed your playing, thank you.

  • hey Patrick!

Just wanted to let you know I enjoy your lessons and videos, just one thing. Tap tuning IS possible, except it works better if you scratch your fingernail over the head and listen for the tone. It may be different for frailing banjos because they may be at a lower tension than bluegrass/resonator banjo, but it is possible to tap tune :)

  • My 5th string won't stay in tune.I get it to G but then it justs goes down as fast as i let go of the tuner.

  • Is it a friction peg?

  • does it have a geared 5th peg?

  • I have the same problem, and I have no idea what's wrong, because there SEEMS to be a gear at the bottom, but when I tune it to G it just turns back down a couple steps..

  • I wanted to see if you ever got your answer. I just bought a 5-string banjo and I am in the process of learning but my 5th string is the same way. I have noticed that it is also loose as well. I tighten it as tight as it can be but it doesn't work.

  • I am in the process of setting up a new Deering. Your ease and knowledge took the angst out of my undertaking.

    CUDOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks, A big help.

  • Great advice. Really helpful. Thanks man.

  • hello ... is that bridge a 1/2 or 5/8 ...

  • Man Patrick, you are the king of banjo. Thanks for all the hard work you do.What ever you are paid its not enough.

  • Very well done......picked up a few good tips. Thanks

  • Thank you for this information and for all the work you do on YT. I'm an old guitar player who just got a banjo yesterday because of you--I'm having a great time with it!

    Thanks again--

  • mine gets delivered in 2 days so this is brill

  • Thank you Patrick.

    You are THE man.

  • What a Godsend!! I was trying to play this thing and I didn't know where to start. This was extremely helpful!!

    Thank You

    Thank You!!

  • Thank you. Exactly the information I was looking for.

  • Nice workshop Patrick.I used to play banjo music with you on hearme. com several years ago. I also subscribed to your Seagull disks.

Just a tip you may appreciate. I've changed a few heads in my 76 years. I find they do tend to stretch when they are new. I usually go around the head with heavy pressure using two thumbs about 2 inches from the edge before stringing up. This will almost guarantee you can easily get another 1/4 turn. Otherwise you can count on re-torquing in a few weeks.

  • Excellent vidoe. Makes me feel much more comfortable with my banjos now. Not so afraid to change or adjust one. Bob/Scottsdale.

  • Wow, thanks for sharing this with us Patrick! Question: How do you get a 30 min video on youtube?

  • I have a directors account. That means I can post videos of any length - but they still have to be under 100MB.

  • @Dobro33H should be called banjo setup and inspiring all! you are a legend, thanks for all the great tips and the awesome slide at the end!

  • Hi Patrick, thank you for inspiring and helping us. You always make me smile.

  • Patrick, thank you for a most interesting 36 minutes! I dont play the banjo, but hearing one played always brings a smile to my face. I am now 60 years old and I think I will now look out for one to learn on!!! Great video.

  • @lindowan123 It was Peanuts that said every baby when born should be given a Banjo and a Puppy.

  • Thank you i send you a message asking for this and in 2 days here it is. You are indeed as awesome as it gets my banjo sounds great now thank you
