A big rip off which left even the basic utilities, healthcare, and education having to make profits to pay shareholders. If it was anything like you describe it would have been sustainable. There was a boom in production until the tax breaks and other financial incentives ran out... then the manufacturers left, leaving the citizens with a choice of unemployment or temporary contracts.

My mother is a NHS nurse and i never hear her complaining about those things at all. I am not against private enterprise but there is one inescapable fact associated with it and that is that a company's first priority is to it's shareholders, not to it's clients, and it is therefore not in the publics interest to have basic utilities and services privatised.

Thatcher's doctrine of avarice and greed encouraged private investment in all areas of society. It's one thing for a car maker to put it's profitability above all else... not everyone needs cars. For the basic utilities to do so however is close to criminal.

The ridiculously high fares on many routes are prohibitive, and you doe not address the issue of public transport being a service for all, and not just a service on profitable routes. I agree that the level of bureaucracy is out of control in many public sector areas but it is not necessary and is the fault of poor management. Well managed public services put the emphasis in the right places.

The largest hospital in Europe has just been completed in Valencia where we already have some fantastic medical facilities. The trains and busses function very well and are affordable, and the weather's great!
