Okay, hands down, my FAVORITE rendition of Glitter and Be Gay. EVER.
Sorry Barbara and Kristin fans, this one has them BOTH BEAT.
It's not about nailing ALL the notes, and hitting them long enough to get applause, it's about MAKING FUN OF THE GENRE OF OPERETTA, as the rest of Candide is. And Madeline Kahn seems to understand this the best of all, in my opinion.
Makes me wish *so bad* that I was born in the right time and place. Thanks so much for sharing. More Madeline Kahn pls! More younger people need to recognize this luminous talent. :)
The marvellous Miss Kahn at her most brilliant. I too love June Anderson, who, despite critical carping, actually GOT THE JOKES, unlike every other Cunegonde. Anderson is the prima diva, with the notes. But Madeline Kahn, with the exception of the sustained e flat at the end, is a VERY close second. Brava!
@jasperdog1 I have no idea what she is doing, as I was not remotely alive in 1968, and i don't think a video exists. However, it sounds like the bracelets are in a box, and she closes them and throws it away.
I had NO idea that she had these notes. Fantastic doesn't begin to describe it. Anyway, it's more brilliant than Cook but not as perfect vocally as June Anderson, Bernstein's and my favorite.
Nothing short of a miracle. She imparts humor into that lovely voice. It is almost impossible ,but possible, to call her beautiful version even more brilliant than Barbara Cook,s....Magnificent!!
Talented, funny, beautiful, sexy...What a woman!

If only Andrew Lloyd Webber had made the Phantom of the Opera movie back in 1991 as originally planned, Madeline would've made a great Carlotta.

Here's a few things to remember: She was in no way a film star at this point and in fact had only one semi hit Off- Broadway shows under her belt.
This was a Birthday Celebration for Leonard Bernstein, whom, I have no doubt, auditioned Kahn, along with others, for the role.
It is a huge testament to her talent - which was virtually unknown in 1968 - that she landed the role!

This is excellent thank you so much BroadwaySucks! (sad name unfortunately)
I'd loved to know what Madeline was doing when she shouts, "BRACELETS!"
Please upload some other gems if you can, I know myself and several others would really appreciate it.
