In the FMA we talk about you step 'NW' and 'NE' if they're within 3', E/W if they're within 6', and SW/SE if they're within 12'. Don't know if that helps any or not, we don't usually deal with weapons that long, and I am not certain if that changes the rules, or how it does.

A lot of these actions are stop hits on either the preparation of attack or counter-offensive actions like side-steps, step-backs and ducks.
