Cthulhu is an elder god created by H.P. Lovecraft. he is never present in any of the books, he is only referenced in a couple of 'em as a slumbering being who will one day wake and walk the earth and rain insanity and chaos on this world. he has become something of a net phenomenon due to...well...thats a good question. but as you can tell there are alot of videos and jokes about him

its implied in that story that what they experienced was a "ghost of Cthulhu" a projection of him as he nears awakening but not awake (like that stage where you kinda wake up but only barely open your eye) in that story they drove the boat through the head which dissipated as mist.
